Now it came to pass afterthis, thatNahash theking of thechildren ofAmmondied, and hissonreigned in his stead.
AndDavidsaid, I willshewkindness untoHanun theson ofNahash, because hisfathershewedkindness to me. AndDavidsentmessengers tocomfort him concerning hisfather. So theservants ofDavidcame into theland of thechildren ofAmmon toHanun, tocomfort him.
But theprinces of thechildren ofAmmonsaid toHanun,Thinkest thou thatDavid dothhonour thyfather, that he hathsentcomforters unto thee? are not hisservantscome unto thee for tosearch, and tooverthrow, and to spyout theland?
WhereforeHanuntookDavid'sservants, andshaved them, and cutoff theirgarments in themidst hard by theirbuttocks, and sent themaway.
Then therewent certain, andtoldDavid how themen were served. And hesent tomeet them: for themen weregreatlyashamed. And thekingsaid,Tarry atJericho until yourbeards begrown, and thenreturn.
And when thechildren ofAmmonsaw that they had made themselvesodious toDavid,Hanun and thechildren ofAmmonsent athousandtalents ofsilver tohire themchariots andhorsemen out ofMesopotamia, and out ofSyriamaachah, and out ofZobah.
So theyhiredthirty andtwothousandchariots, and theking ofMaachah and hispeople; whocame andpitchedbeforeMedeba. And thechildren ofAmmon gathered themselvestogether from theircities, andcame tobattle.
And whenDavidheard of it, hesentJoab, and all thehost of the mightymen.
And thechildren ofAmmon cameout, and put thebattle inarray before thegate of thecity: and thekings that werecome were by themselves in thefield.
Now whenJoabsaw that thebattle was set against himbefore andbehind, he choseout of all thechoice ofIsrael, and put them inarrayagainst theSyrians.
And therest of thepeople hedelivered unto thehand ofAbishai hisbrother, and they set themselves inarrayagainst thechildren ofAmmon.
And hesaid, If theSyrians be toostrong for me, then thou shalthelp me: but if thechildren ofAmmon be toostrong for thee, then I willhelp thee.
Be of goodcourage, and let us behave ourselvesvaliantly for ourpeople, and for thecities of ourGod: and let theLORDdo that which isgood in hissight.
SoJoab and thepeople that were with him drewnighbefore theSyrians unto thebattle; and theyfledbefore him.
And when thechildren ofAmmonsaw that theSyrians werefled, they likewisefledbeforeAbishai hisbrother, andentered into thecity. ThenJoabcame toJerusalem.
And when theSyrianssaw that they were put to theworsebeforeIsrael, theysentmessengers, and drewforth theSyrians that werebeyond theriver: andShophach thecaptain of thehost ofHadarezer wentbefore them.
And it wastoldDavid; and hegathered allIsrael, and passedoverJordan, andcame upon them, and set the battle inarray against them. So whenDavid had put thebattle inarrayagainst theSyrians, theyfought with him.
But theSyriansfledbeforeIsrael; andDavidslew of theSyriansseventhousand men which fought inchariots, andfortythousandfootmen, andkilledShophach thecaptain of thehost.
And when theservants ofHadarezersaw that they were put to theworsebeforeIsrael, they madepeace withDavid, and became hisservants: neitherwould theSyrianshelp thechildren ofAmmon any more.
