AndDavidsaid toJoab and to therulers of thepeople,Go,numberIsrael fromBeersheba even toDan; andbring thenumber of them to me, that I mayknow it.
AndJoabanswered, TheLORD make hispeople anhundredtimes so manymore asthey be: but, mylord theking, are they not all mylord'sservants? why then doth mylordrequire this thing? why will he be a cause oftrespass toIsrael?
Nevertheless theking'swordprevailed againstJoab. WhereforeJoabdeparted, andwent throughout allIsrael, andcame toJerusalem.
AndJoabgave thesum of thenumber of thepeople untoDavid. And all they ofIsrael were athousandthousand and anhundredthousandmen thatdrewsword: andJudah wasfourhundred threescore andtenthousandmen thatdrewsword.
ButLevi andBenjamincounted he notamong them: for theking'sword wasabominable toJoab.
AndGod wasdispleased with thisthing; therefore hesmoteIsrael.
AndDavidsaid untoGod, I havesinnedgreatly, because I havedone thisthing: but now, I beseech thee, doaway theiniquity of thyservant; for I have doneveryfoolishly.
And theLORDspake untoGad,David'sseer,saying,
Go andtellDavid, saying, Thussaith theLORD, Ioffer theethree things:choose theeone ofthem, that I maydo it unto thee.
Eitherthreeyears'famine; orthreemonths to bedestroyedbefore thyfoes, while that thesword of thineenemiesovertaketh thee;or elsethreedays thesword of theLORD, even thepestilence, in theland, and theangel of theLORDdestroying throughout all thecoasts ofIsrael. Now thereforeadvise thyself whatword I shall bringagain to him thatsent me.
AndDavidsaid untoGad, I am in agreatstrait: let mefall now into thehand of theLORD; forverygreat are hismercies: but let me notfall into thehand ofman.
So theLORDsentpestilence uponIsrael: and therefell ofIsraelseventythousandmen.
AndGodsent anangel untoJerusalem todestroy it: and as he wasdestroying, theLORDbeheld, and herepented him of theevil, andsaid to theangel thatdestroyed, It isenough, stay now thinehand. And theangel of theLORDstood by thethreshingfloor ofOrnan theJebusite.
AndDavid liftedup hiseyes, andsaw theangel of theLORDstand between theearth and theheaven, having adrawnsword in hishand stretchedout overJerusalem. ThenDavid and theelders of Israel, who wereclothed insackcloth, fell upon theirfaces.
AndDavidsaid untoGod, Is it not I thatcommanded thepeople to benumbered? even I it is that havesinned and doneevilindeed; but as for thesesheep, what have theydone? let thinehand, I pray thee, OLORD myGod, be on me, and on myfather'shouse; but not on thypeople, that they should beplagued.
Then theangel of theLORDcommandedGad tosay toDavid, thatDavid should goup, and setup analtar unto theLORD in thethreshingfloor ofOrnan theJebusite.
AndDavid wentup at thesaying ofGad, which hespake in thename of theLORD.
AndOrnan turnedback, andsaw theangel; and hisfoursons with himhid themselves. NowOrnan wasthreshingwheat.
And asDavidcame toOrnan,Ornanlooked andsawDavid, and wentout of thethreshingfloor, andbowed himself toDavid with hisface to theground.
ThenDavidsaid toOrnan,Grant me theplace of thisthreshingfloor, that I maybuild analtar therein unto theLORD: thou shaltgrant it me for thefullprice: that theplague may bestayed from thepeople.
AndOrnansaid untoDavid,Take it to thee, and let mylord thekingdo that which isgood in hiseyes:lo, Igive thee theoxen also for burntofferings, and the threshinginstruments forwood, and thewheat for the meatoffering; Igive it all.
AndkingDavidsaid toOrnan, Nay; but I willverilybuy it for thefullprice: for I will nottake that which is thine for theLORD, noroffer burntofferings withoutcost.
SoDavidgave toOrnan for theplacesixhundredshekels ofgold byweight.
AndDavidbuilt there analtar unto theLORD, andoffered burntofferings and peaceofferings, andcalled upon theLORD; and heanswered him fromheaven byfire upon thealtar of burntoffering.
And theLORDcommanded theangel; and he putup hisswordagain into thesheath thereof.
At thattime whenDavidsaw that theLORD hadanswered him in thethreshingfloor ofOrnan theJebusite, then hesacrificed there.
For thetabernacle of theLORD, whichMosesmade in thewilderness, and thealtar of the burntoffering, were at thatseason in the highplace atGibeon.
ButDavidcould notgobefore it toenquire ofGod: for he wasafraidbecause of thesword of theangel of theLORD.
