KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass aftermanydays, that theword of theLORD came toElijah in thethirdyear, saying,Go,shew thyself untoAhab; and I willsendrainupon theearth.
AndElijahwent toshew himself untoAhab. And there was asorefamine inSamaria.
AndAhabcalledObadiah, which was the governor of hishouse. (NowObadiahfeared theLORDgreatly:
For it was so, whenJezebel cutoff theprophets of theLORD, thatObadiahtook anhundredprophets, andhid them byfifty in acave, andfed them withbread andwater.)
AndAhabsaid untoObadiah,Go into theland, unto allfountains ofwater, and unto allbrooks:peradventure we mayfindgrass tosave thehorses andmulesalive, that welose not all thebeasts.
So theydivided theland between them to passthroughout it:Ahabwentoneway by himself, andObadiahwentanotherway by himself.
And asObadiah was in theway, behold,Elijahmet him: and heknew him, andfell on hisface, andsaid, Art thou that mylordElijah?
And heanswered him, I am:go,tell thylord, Behold,Elijah is here.
And hesaid, What have Isinned, that thou wouldestdeliver thyservant into thehand ofAhab, toslay me?
As theLORD thyGodliveth, there isnonation orkingdom, whither mylord hath notsent toseek thee: and when theysaid, He is not there; he took anoath of thekingdom andnation, that theyfound thee not.
And now thousayest,Go,tell thylord, Behold,Elijah is here.
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I amgone from thee, that theSpirit of theLORD shallcarry thee whither Iknow not; and so when Icome andtellAhab, and he cannotfind thee, he shallslay me: but I thyservantfear theLORD from myyouth.
Was it nottold mylord what Idid whenJezebelslew theprophets of theLORD, how Ihid anhundredmen of theLORD'Sprophets byfifty in acave, andfed them withbread andwater?
And now thousayest,Go,tell thylord, Behold,Elijah is here: and he shallslay me.
AndElijahsaid, As theLORD ofhostsliveth, before whom Istand, I will surelyshew myself unto him today.
And it came to pass, whenAhabsawElijah, thatAhabsaid unto him, Art thou he thattroublethIsrael?
And heanswered, I have nottroubledIsrael; but thou, and thyfather'shouse, in that ye haveforsaken thecommandments of theLORD, and thou hastfollowedBaalim.
Now thereforesend, andgather to me allIsrael untomountCarmel, and theprophets ofBaalfourhundred andfifty, and theprophets of thegrovesfourhundred, whicheat atJezebel'stable.
SoAhabsent unto all thechildren ofIsrael, andgathered theprophetstogether untomountCarmel.
AndElijahcame unto all thepeople, andsaid, Howlonghalt ye betweentwoopinions? if theLORD beGod, follow him: but ifBaal, thenfollow him. And thepeopleanswered him not aword.
ThensaidElijah unto thepeople, I, even I only, remain aprophet of theLORD; butBaal'sprophets arefourhundred andfiftymen.
Let them thereforegive ustwobullocks; and let themchooseonebullock for themselves, and cut it inpieces, andlay it onwood, andput nofire under: and I willdress theotherbullock, andlay it onwood, andput nofire under:
Andcall ye on thename of yourgods, and I willcall on thename of theLORD: and theGod thatanswereth byfire, let him beGod. And all thepeopleanswered andsaid, It iswellspoken.
AndElijahsaid unto theprophets ofBaal,Choose youonebullock for yourselves, anddress itfirst; for ye aremany; andcall on thename of yourgods, butput nofire under.
And theytook thebullock which wasgiven them, and theydressed it, andcalled on thename ofBaal frommorning even untilnoon, saying, OBaal, hear us. But there wasnovoice, nor any thatanswered. And theyleaped upon thealtar which wasmade.
And it came to pass atnoon, thatElijahmocked them, andsaid,Cryaloud: for he is agod; either he istalking, or he ispursuing, or he is in ajourney, orperadventure hesleepeth, and must beawaked.
And theycriedaloud, andcut themselves after theirmanner withknives andlancets, till theblood gushedout upon them.
And it came to pass, whenmidday waspast, and theyprophesied until the time of theoffering of the eveningsacrifice, that there was neithervoice, nor any toanswer, nor any thatregarded.
AndElijahsaid unto all thepeople, Comenear unto me. And all thepeople camenear unto him. And herepaired thealtar of theLORD that was brokendown.
AndElijahtooktwelvestones, according to thenumber of thetribes of thesons ofJacob, unto whom theword of theLORD came, saying,Israel shall be thyname:
And with thestones hebuilt analtar in thename of theLORD: and hemade atrenchabout thealtar, as great as wouldcontain twomeasures ofseed.
And heput thewood inorder, andcut thebullock in pieces, andlaid him on thewood, andsaid,Fillfourbarrels withwater, andpour it on the burntsacrifice, and on thewood.
And hesaid, Do it the secondtime. And they did it the third time.
And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
