ThenJezebelsent amessenger untoElijah, saying, So let thegodsdo to me, andmore also, if Imake not thylife as thelife ofone of them by tomorrow about thistime.
And when hesaw that, hearose, andwent for hislife, andcame toBeersheba, which belongeth toJudah, andleft hisservant there.
But he himselfwent aday'sjourney into thewilderness, andcame and satdown undera junipertree: and herequested forhimself that he mightdie; andsaid, It isenough; now, OLORD, takeaway mylife; for I am notbetter than myfathers.
And as helay andslept undera junipertree, behold, then anangeltouched him, andsaid unto him,Arise andeat.
And helooked, and, behold, there was acake baken on thecoals, and acruse ofwater at hishead. And he dideat anddrink, and laid himdownagain.
And theangel of theLORD cameagain the secondtime, andtouched him, andsaid,Arise andeat; because thejourney is toogreat for thee.
And hearose, and dideat anddrink, andwent in thestrength of thatmeatfortydays andfortynights untoHoreb themount ofGod.
And hecame thither unto acave, andlodged there; and, behold, theword of theLORD came to him, and hesaid unto him, What doest thou here,Elijah?
And hesaid, I have beenveryjealous for theLORDGod ofhosts: for thechildren ofIsrael haveforsaken thycovenant, throwndown thinealtars, andslain thyprophets with thesword; and I, even I only, amleft; and theyseek mylife, to take itaway.
And hesaid, Goforth, andstand upon themountbefore theLORD. And, behold, theLORD passedby, and agreat andstrongwindrent themountains, and brake inpieces therocksbefore theLORD; but theLORD was not in thewind: andafter thewind anearthquake; but theLORD was not in theearthquake:
Andafter theearthquake afire; but theLORD was not in thefire: andafter thefire astillsmallvoice.
And it was so, whenElijahheard it, that hewrapped hisface in hismantle, and wentout, andstood in the enteringin of thecave. And, behold, there came avoice unto him, andsaid, What doest thou here,Elijah?
And hesaid, I have beenveryjealous for theLORDGod ofhosts: because thechildren ofIsrael haveforsaken thycovenant, throwndown thinealtars, andslain thyprophets with thesword; and I, even I only, amleft; and theyseek mylife, to take itaway.
And theLORDsaid unto him,Go,return on thyway to thewilderness ofDamascus: and when thoucomest, anointHazael to beking overSyria:
AndJehu theson ofNimshi shalt thouanoint to beking overIsrael: andElisha theson ofShaphat ofAbelmeholah shalt thouanoint to beprophet in thy room.
And it shall come to pass, that him thatescapeth thesword ofHazael shallJehuslay: and him thatescapeth from thesword ofJehu shallElishaslay.
Yet I haveleft meseventhousand inIsrael, all theknees which have notbowed untoBaal, and everymouth which hath notkissed him.
So hedeparted thence, andfoundElisha theson ofShaphat, who wasplowing withtwelveyoke of oxenbefore him, and he with thetwelfth: andElijahpassed by him, andcast hismantle upon him.
And heleft theoxen, andranafterElijah, andsaid, Let me, I pray thee, kiss myfather and mymother, and then I willfollow thee. And hesaid unto him, Gobackagain: for what have Idone to thee?
And he returnedback fromhim, andtook ayoke ofoxen, andslew them, andboiled theirflesh with theinstruments of theoxen, andgave unto thepeople, and they dideat. Then hearose, andwentafterElijah, andministered unto him.
