Chapter 20
KJV · Textus Receptus
AndBenhadad theking ofSyriagathered all hishosttogether: and there werethirty andtwokings with him, andhorses, andchariots: and he wentup andbesiegedSamaria, andwarred against it.
And hesentmessengers toAhabking ofIsrael into thecity, andsaid unto him, ThussaithBenhadad,
Thysilver and thygold is mine; thywives also and thychildren, even thegoodliest, are mine.
And theking ofIsraelanswered andsaid, Mylord, Oking, according to thysaying, I am thine, and all that I have.
And themessengers cameagain, andsaid, ThusspeakethBenhadad,saying, Although I havesent unto thee,saying, Thou shaltdeliver me thysilver, and thygold, and thywives, and thychildren;
Yet I willsend myservants unto thee tomorrow about thistime, and they shallsearch thinehouse, and thehouses of thyservants; and it shallbe, that whatsoever ispleasant in thineeyes, they shallput it in theirhand, and take itaway.
Then theking ofIsraelcalled all theelders of theland, andsaid,Mark, I pray you, andsee how this manseekethmischief: for hesent unto me for mywives, and for mychildren, and for mysilver, and for mygold; and Idenied him not.
And all theelders and all thepeoplesaid unto him,Hearken not unto him, norconsent.
Wherefore hesaid unto themessengers ofBenhadad,Tell mylord theking, All that thou didstsend for to thyservant at thefirst I willdo: but thisthing Imay notdo. And themessengersdeparted, andbrought himwordagain.
AndBenhadadsent unto him, andsaid, Thegods doso unto me, and morealso, if thedust ofSamaria shallsuffice forhandfuls for all thepeople thatfollow me.
And theking ofIsraelanswered andsaid,Tell him, Let not him thatgirdeth on his harnessboast himself as he that putteth itoff.
And it came to pass, when Benhadadheard thismessage, as he wasdrinking, he and thekings in thepavilions, that hesaid unto hisservants,Set yourselves in array. And theyset themselves in array against thecity.
And, behold, therecameaprophet untoAhabking ofIsrael, saying, Thussaith theLORD, Hast thouseen all thisgreatmultitude? behold, I willdeliver it into thinehand thisday; and thou shaltknow that I am theLORD.
AndAhabsaid, By whom? And hesaid, Thussaith theLORD, Even by the youngmen of theprinces of theprovinces. Then hesaid, Who shallorder thebattle? And heanswered, Thou.
Then henumbered the youngmen of theprinces of theprovinces, and they weretwohundred andthirtytwo: andafter them henumbered all thepeople, even all thechildren ofIsrael, beingseventhousand.
And they wentout atnoon. ButBenhadad wasdrinking himselfdrunk in thepavilions, he and thekings, thethirty andtwokings thathelped him.
And the youngmen of theprinces of theprovinces wentoutfirst; andBenhadad sentout, and theytold him, saying, There aremen comeout ofSamaria.
And hesaid, Whether they be comeout forpeace, take themalive; or whether they be comeout forwar, take themalive.
So these youngmen of theprinces of theprovinces cameout of thecity, and thearmy whichfollowed them.
And theyslew everyone hisman: and theSyriansfled; andIsraelpursued them: andBenhadad theking ofSyriaescaped on anhorse with thehorsemen.
And theking ofIsrael wentout, andsmote thehorses andchariots, andslew theSyrians with agreatslaughter.
And theprophetcame to theking ofIsrael, andsaid unto him,Go,strengthen thyself, andmark, andsee what thoudoest: for at thereturn of theyear theking ofSyria will comeup against thee.
And theservants of theking ofSyriasaid unto him, Theirgods aregods of thehills; therefore they werestronger than we;but let usfight against them in theplain, andsurely we shall bestronger than they.
Anddo thisthing,Take thekings away, everyman out of hisplace, andputcaptains in their rooms:
Andnumber thee anarmy, like thearmy that thou hastlost, horse forhorse, andchariot forchariot: and we willfightagainst them in theplain, and surely we shall bestronger than they. And hehearkened unto theirvoice, and didso.
And it came to pass at thereturn of theyear, thatBenhadadnumbered theSyrians, and wentup toAphek, tofight againstIsrael.
And thechildren ofIsrael werenumbered, and were allpresent, andwentagainst them: and thechildren ofIsraelpitched before them liketwo littleflocks ofkids; but theSyriansfilled thecountry.
And therecame aman ofGod, andspake unto theking ofIsrael, andsaid, Thussaith theLORD, Because theSyrians havesaid, TheLORD isGod of thehills, but he is notGod of thevalleys, therefore will Ideliver all thisgreatmultitude into thinehand, and ye shallknow that I am theLORD.
And theypitchedone overagainst theothersevendays. And so it was, that in theseventhday thebattle wasjoined: and thechildren ofIsraelslew of theSyrians anhundredthousandfootmen inoneday.
But therestfled toAphek, into thecity; and there awallfell upontwenty andseventhousand of themen that wereleft. AndBenhadadfled, andcame into thecity, into aninnerchamber.
And hisservantssaid unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
And Benhadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
