Now there was acertainman ofRamathaimzophim, ofmountEphraim, and hisname wasElkanah, theson ofJeroham, theson ofElihu, theson ofTohu, theson ofZuph, anEphrathite:
2 And he hadtwowives; thename of theone wasHannah, and thename of theotherPeninnah: andPeninnah hadchildren, butHannah had nochildren.
3 Andthisman wentup out of hiscityyearly toworship and tosacrifice unto theLORD ofhosts inShiloh. And thetwosons ofEli,Hophni andPhinehas, thepriests of theLORD, were there.
4 And when thetime was thatElkanahoffered, hegave toPeninnah hiswife, and to all hersons and herdaughters,portions:
5 But untoHannah hegaveaworthyportion; for helovedHannah: but theLORD had shutup herwomb.
6 And heradversary alsoprovoked hersore, for to make herfret, because theLORD hadshutup herwomb.
7 And as hedid soyear byyear,when she wentup to thehouse of theLORD, so sheprovoked her; therefore shewept, and did noteat.
8 ThensaidElkanah herhusband to her,Hannah, whyweepest thou? and whyeatest thou not? and why is thyheartgrieved? am not Ibetter to thee thantensons?
9 SoHannah roseupafter they hadeaten inShiloh, andafter they haddrunk. NowEli thepriestsat upon aseat by apost of thetemple of theLORD.
10 And she was inbitterness ofsoul, andprayed unto theLORD, andweptsore.
11 And shevowed avow, andsaid, OLORD ofhosts, if thou wiltindeedlook on theaffliction of thinehandmaid, andremember me, and notforget thinehandmaid, but wiltgive unto thinehandmaid amanchild, then I willgive him unto theLORD all thedays of hislife, and there shall norazorcome upon hishead.
12 And it came to pass, as shecontinuedprayingbefore theLORD, thatElimarked hermouth.
13 NowHannah, shespake in herheart; only herlipsmoved, but hervoice was notheard: thereforeElithought she had beendrunken.
14 AndElisaid unto her, How long wilt thou bedrunken? putaway thywine from thee.
15 AndHannahanswered andsaid, No, mylord, I am awoman of asorrowfulspirit: I havedrunk neitherwine nor strongdrink, but have pouredout mysoulbefore theLORD.
16Count not thinehandmaidfor adaughter ofBelial: for out of theabundance of mycomplaint andgrief have Ispoken hitherto.
17 ThenElianswered andsaid,Go inpeace: and theGod ofIsraelgrant thee thypetition that thou hastasked of him.
18 And shesaid, Let thinehandmaidfindgrace in thysight. So thewomanwent herway, and dideat, and hercountenance was no more sad.
19 And they roseup in themorningearly, andworshippedbefore theLORD, andreturned, andcame to theirhouse toRamah: andElkanahknewHannah hiswife; and theLORDremembered her.
20 Wherefore it came to pass, when thetime wascome about afterHannah hadconceived, that shebare ason, andcalled hisnameSamuel, saying, Because I haveasked him of theLORD.
21 And themanElkanah, and all hishouse, wentup tooffer unto theLORD theyearlysacrifice, and hisvow.
22 ButHannah went notup; for shesaid unto herhusband, I will not go up until thechild beweaned, and then I willbring him, that he mayappearbefore theLORD, and thereabideforever.
23 AndElkanah herhusbandsaid unto her,Do whatseemeth theegood;tarry until thou haveweaned him; only theLORDestablish hisword. So thewomanabode, and gave hersonsuck until sheweaned him.
24 And when she hadweaned him, she took himup with her, withthreebullocks, andoneephah offlour, and abottle ofwine, andbrought him unto thehouse of theLORD inShiloh: and thechild wasyoung.
25 And theyslew abullock, andbrought thechild toEli.
26 And shesaid,Oh mylord, as thysoulliveth, mylord, I am thewoman thatstood by thee here,praying unto theLORD.
27 For thischild Iprayed; and theLORD hathgiven me mypetition which Iasked of him:
28 Therefore also I havelent him to theLORD; as long as heliveth he shall belent to theLORD. And heworshipped theLORD there.
