Chapter 15
KJV · Textus Receptus
Samuel alsosaid untoSaul, TheLORDsent me toanoint thee to beking over hispeople, overIsrael: now thereforehearken thou unto thevoice of thewords of theLORD.
Thussaith theLORD ofhosts, Iremember that whichAmalekdid toIsrael, how helaid wait for him in theway, when he cameup fromEgypt.
Nowgo andsmiteAmalek, and utterlydestroy all that they have, andspare them not; butslay bothman andwoman, infant andsuckling,ox andsheep, camel andass.
AndSaulgathered thepeopletogether, andnumbered them inTelaim, twohundredthousandfootmen, andtenthousandmen ofJudah.
AndSaulcame to acity ofAmalek, and laidwait in thevalley.
AndSaulsaid unto theKenites,Go,depart, get youdown fromamong theAmalekites, lest Idestroy you with them: for yeshewedkindness to all thechildren ofIsrael, when they cameup out ofEgypt. So theKenitesdeparted fromamong theAmalekites.
AndSaulsmote theAmalekites fromHavilah until thoucomest toShur, that is overagainstEgypt.
And hetookAgag theking of theAmalekitesalive, and utterlydestroyed all thepeople with theedge of thesword.
ButSaul and thepeoplesparedAgag, and thebest of thesheep, and of theoxen, and of thefatlings, and thelambs, and all that wasgood, andwould not utterlydestroy them: but everything that wasvile andrefuse, that they destroyedutterly.
Then came theword of theLORD untoSamuel, saying,
Itrepenteth me that I have setupSaul to beking: for he is turnedback fromfollowing me, and hath notperformed mycommandments. And itgrievedSamuel; and hecried unto theLORD allnight.
And whenSamuel roseearly tomeetSaul in themorning, it wastoldSamuel, saying,Saulcame toCarmel, and, behold, he set himup aplace, and is goneabout, and passedon, and gonedown toGilgal.
AndSamuelcame toSaul: andSaulsaid unto him,Blessed be thou of theLORD: I haveperformed thecommandment of theLORD.
AndSamuelsaid, What meaneth then thisbleating of thesheep in mineears, and thelowing of theoxen which Ihear?
AndSaulsaid, They havebrought them from theAmalekites: for thepeoplespared thebest of thesheep and of theoxen, tosacrifice unto theLORD thyGod; and therest we have utterlydestroyed.
ThenSamuelsaid untoSaul,Stay, and I willtell thee what theLORD hathsaid to me thisnight. And hesaid unto him, Sayon.
AndSamuelsaid, When thou wastlittle in thine ownsight, wast thou not made thehead of thetribes ofIsrael, and theLORDanointed theeking overIsrael?
And theLORDsent thee on ajourney, andsaid,Go and utterlydestroy thesinners theAmalekites, andfight against them until they beconsumed.
Wherefore then didst thou notobey thevoice of theLORD, but didstfly upon thespoil, anddidstevil in thesight of theLORD?
AndSaulsaid untoSamuel, Yea, I haveobeyed thevoice of theLORD, and havegone theway which theLORDsent me, and havebroughtAgag theking ofAmalek, and have utterlydestroyed theAmalekites.
But thepeopletook of thespoil, sheep andoxen, thechief of the things which should have been utterlydestroyed, tosacrifice unto theLORD thyGod inGilgal.
AndSamuelsaid, Hath theLORD as greatdelight in burntofferings andsacrifices, as inobeying thevoice of theLORD? Behold, toobey isbetter thansacrifice, and tohearken than thefat oframs.
Forrebellion is as thesin ofwitchcraft, andstubbornness is asiniquity andidolatry. Because thou hastrejected theword of theLORD, he hath alsorejected thee from beingking.
AndSaulsaid untoSamuel, I havesinned: for I havetransgressed thecommandment of theLORD, and thywords: because Ifeared thepeople, andobeyed theirvoice.
Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon mysin, and turnagain with me, that I mayworship theLORD.
AndSamuelsaid untoSaul, I will notreturn with thee: for thou hastrejected theword of theLORD, and theLORD hathrejected thee from beingking overIsrael.
And asSamuel turnedabout to goaway, he laidhold upon theskirt of hismantle, and itrent.
AndSamuelsaid unto him, TheLORD hathrent thekingdom ofIsrael from thee thisday, and hathgiven it to aneighbour of thine, that isbetter than thou.
And also theStrength ofIsrael will notlie norrepent: for he is not aman, that he shouldrepent.
Then hesaid, I havesinned: yethonour me now, I pray thee, before theelders of mypeople, and beforeIsrael, and turnagain with me, that I mayworship theLORD thyGod.
ThensaidSamuel, Bring yehither to meAgag theking of theAmalekites. AndAgagcame unto himdelicately. AndAgagsaid,Surely thebitterness ofdeath ispast.
AndSamuelsaid, As thysword hath madewomenchildless, so shall thymother bechildless amongwomen. AndSamuelhewedAgag inpiecesbefore theLORD inGilgal.
ThenSamuelwent toRamah; andSaul wentup to hishouse toGibeah ofSaul.
AndSamuel came nomore toseeSaul until theday of hisdeath:neverthelessSamuelmourned forSaul: and theLORDrepented that he had madeSaulking overIsrael.
