Chapter 18
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass, when he had made anend ofspeaking untoSaul, that thesoul ofJonathan wasknit with thesoul ofDavid, andJonathanloved him as his ownsoul.
AndSaultook him thatday, and wouldlet him go no morehome to hisfather'shouse.
ThenJonathan andDavidmade acovenant, because heloved him as his ownsoul.
AndJonathanstripped himself of therobe that was upon him, andgave it toDavid, and hisgarments, even to hissword, and to hisbow, and to hisgirdle.
AndDavid wentout whithersoeverSaulsent him, and behaved himselfwisely: andSaulset him over themen ofwar, and he wasaccepted in thesight of all thepeople, and also in thesight ofSaul'sservants.
And it came to pass as theycame, whenDavid wasreturned from theslaughter of thePhilistine, that thewomen cameout of allcities ofIsrael, singing anddancing, tomeetkingSaul, withtabrets, withjoy, and withinstruments of musick.
And thewomenanswered one another as theyplayed, andsaid,Saul hathslain histhousands, andDavid his tenthousands.
AndSaul wasverywroth, and thesayingdispleased him; and hesaid, They haveascribed untoDavid tenthousands, and to me they haveascribed butthousands: and what can he have more but thekingdom?
AndSauleyedDavid from thatday andforward.
And it came to pass on themorrow, that theevilspirit fromGodcame uponSaul, and heprophesied in themidst of thehouse: andDavidplayed with hishand, as at othertimes: and there was ajavelin inSaul'shand.
AndSaulcast thejavelin; for hesaid, I willsmiteDavid even to thewall with it. AndDavid avoidedout of hispresencetwice.
AndSaul wasafraidofDavid, because theLORD was with him, and wasdeparted fromSaul.
ThereforeSaulremoved him from him, andmade him hiscaptain over athousand; and he wentout and cameinbefore thepeople.
AndDavid behaved himselfwisely in all hisways; and theLORD was with him.
Wherefore whenSaulsaw that hebehaved himselfverywisely, he wasafraidof him.
But allIsrael andJudahlovedDavid, because he wentout and cameinbefore them.
AndSaulsaid toDavid, Behold myelderdaughterMerab, her will Igive thee towife: only be thouvaliant for me, andfight theLORD'Sbattles. ForSaulsaid, Let not minehand be upon him, but let thehand of thePhilistines be upon him.
AndDavidsaid untoSaul, Who am I? and what is mylife, or myfather'sfamily inIsrael, that I should be son inlaw to theking?
But it came to pass at thetime whenMerabSaul'sdaughter should have beengiven toDavid, that she wasgiven untoAdriel theMeholathite towife.
AndMichalSaul'sdaughterlovedDavid: and theytoldSaul, and thethingpleased him.
AndSaulsaid, I willgive him her, that she may be asnare to him, and that thehand of thePhilistines may be against him. WhereforeSaulsaid toDavid, Thou shalt thisday be my son inlaw in the one of thetwain.
AndSaulcommanded hisservants, saying,Commune withDavidsecretly, andsay, Behold, theking hathdelight in thee, and all hisservantslove thee: now therefore be theking's son inlaw.
AndSaul'sservantsspake thosewords in theears ofDavid. AndDavidsaid,Seemeth it to you alight thing to be aking's son inlaw, seeing that I am apoorman, and lightlyesteemed?
And theservants ofSaultold him, saying, On thismannerspakeDavid.
AndSaulsaid, Thus shall yesay toDavid, Thekingdesireth not anydowry, but anhundredforeskins of thePhilistines, to beavenged of theking'senemies. ButSaulthought to makeDavidfall by thehand of thePhilistines.
And when hisservantstoldDavid thesewords, itpleasedDavid well to be theking's son inlaw: and thedays were notexpired.
WhereforeDavidarose andwent, he and hismen, andslew of thePhilistines twohundredmen; andDavidbrought theirforeskins, and they gave them in fulltale to theking, that he might be theking's son inlaw. AndSaulgave himMichal hisdaughter towife.
AndSaulsaw andknew that theLORD was withDavid, and thatMichalSaul'sdaughterloved him.
AndSaul was yet themoreafraidofDavid; andSaul becameDavid'senemycontinually.
Then theprinces of thePhilistines wentforth: and it came to pass, after they wentforth, thatDavid behaved himself morewisely than all theservants ofSaul; so that hisname wasmuch setby.
