Chapter 20
KJV · Textus Receptus
AndDavidfled fromNaioth inRamah, andcame andsaidbeforeJonathan, What have Idone? what is mineiniquity? and what is mysinbefore thyfather, that heseeketh mylife?
And hesaid unto him, Godforbid; thou shalt notdie: behold, myfather willdonothing eithergreat orsmall, but that he willshew it me: and why should myfatherhide thisthing from me? it is not so.
AndDavidsware moreover, andsaid, Thyfathercertainlyknoweth that I havefoundgrace in thineeyes; and hesaith, Let notJonathanknow this, lest he begrieved: buttruly as theLORDliveth, and as thysoulliveth, there is but astep between me anddeath.
ThensaidJonathan untoDavid, Whatsoever thysouldesireth, I will evendo it for thee.
AndDavidsaid untoJonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the newmoon, and I should notfail tosit with theking atmeat: but let mego, that I mayhide myself in thefield unto thethird day ateven.
If thyfather atallmiss me, thensay,Davidearnestlyasked leave of me that he mightrun toBethlehem hiscity: for there is ayearlysacrifice there for all thefamily.
If hesay thus, It iswell; thyservant shall havepeace: but if he beverywroth, then besure thatevil isdetermined by him.
Therefore thou shaltdealkindly with thyservant; for thou hastbrought thyservant into acovenant of theLORD with thee: notwithstanding, if therebe in meiniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thoubring me to thyfather?
AndJonathansaid, Far be it fromthee: for if Iknewcertainly thatevil weredetermined by myfather tocome upon thee, then would not Itell it thee?
ThensaidDavid toJonathan, Who shalltell me? or what if thyfatheranswer theeroughly?
AndJonathansaid untoDavid,Come, and let us goout into thefield. And they wentoutboth of them into thefield.
AndJonathansaid untoDavid, OLORDGod ofIsrael, when I havesounded myfather about tomorrow anytime, or thethird day, and, behold, if there begood towardDavid, and I thensend not unto thee, andshew it thee;
TheLORDdoso and muchmore toJonathan: but if itplease myfather to do theeevil, then I willshew it thee, and send theeaway, that thou mayestgo inpeace: and theLORD be with thee, as he hath been with myfather.
And thou shalt not only whileyet Iliveshew me thekindness of theLORD, that Idie not:
But also thou shalt not cutoff thykindness from myhouseforever: no, not when theLORD hath cutoff theenemies ofDavid everyone from theface of theearth.
SoJonathanmade a covenant with thehouse ofDavid, saying, Let theLORD evenrequire it at thehand ofDavid'senemies.
AndJonathan causedDavid toswearagain, because heloved him: for heloved him as heloved his ownsoul.
ThenJonathansaid toDavid, Tomorrow is the newmoon: and thou shalt bemissed, because thyseat will beempty.
And when thou hast stayed threedays, then thou shalt godownquickly, andcome to theplace where thou didsthide thyselfwhen thebusiness was in hand, and shaltremainby thestoneEzel.
And I willshootthreearrows on theside thereof, as though Ishot at amark.
And, behold, I willsend alad, saying,Go, findout thearrows. If Iexpresslysay unto thelad, Behold, thearrows are on this side of thee, take them; thencome thou: for there ispeace to thee, and nohurt; as theLORDliveth.
But if Isay thus unto the youngman, Behold, thearrows arebeyond thee; go thyway: for theLORD hath sent theeaway.
And as touching thematter which thou and I havespoken of, behold, theLORD be between thee and meforever.
SoDavidhid himself in thefield: and when the newmoon was come, theking sat himdown toeatmeat.
And thekingsat upon hisseat, as at othertimes, even upon aseat by thewall: andJonathanarose, andAbnersat bySaul'sside, andDavid'splace wasempty.
NeverthelessSaulspake not anything thatday: for hethought, Something hathbefallen him, he isnotclean; surely he is notclean.
And it came to pass on themorrow, which was thesecond day of themonth, thatDavid'splace wasempty: andSaulsaid untoJonathan hisson, Whereforecometh not theson ofJesse tomeat, neitheryesterday, nor today?
AndJonathanansweredSaul,Davidearnestlyasked leave ofme to go toBethlehem:
And hesaid, Let mego, I pray thee; for ourfamily hath asacrifice in thecity; and mybrother, he hathcommanded me to be there: and now, if I havefoundfavour in thineeyes, let me getaway, I pray thee, andsee mybrethren. Therefore hecometh not unto theking'stable.
ThenSaul'sanger waskindled againstJonathan, and hesaid unto him, Thouson of theperverserebellious woman, do not Iknow that thou hastchosen theson ofJesse to thine ownconfusion, and unto theconfusion of thymother'snakedness?
For as longas theson ofJesseliveth upon theground, thou shalt not beestablished, nor thykingdom. Wherefore nowsend andfetch him unto me, for he shall surelydie.
AndJonathanansweredSaul hisfather, andsaid unto him, Wherefore shall he beslain? what hath he done?
And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.
And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?
And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
