ThencameDavid toNob toAhimelech thepriest: andAhimelech wasafraid at themeeting ofDavid, andsaid unto him, Why art thou alone, and noman with thee?
AndDavidsaid untoAhimelech thepriest, Theking hathcommanded me abusiness, and hathsaid unto me, Let nomanknow anything of thebusiness whereabout Isend thee, and what I havecommanded thee: and I haveappointed myservants tosuch andsuch aplace.
Now therefore whatis under thinehand?give mefive loaves ofbread in minehand, or what there ispresent.
And thepriestansweredDavid, andsaid, There is nocommonbread under minehand, but thereishallowedbread; if the youngmen havekept themselves atleast fromwomen.
AndDavidanswered thepriest, andsaid unto him, Of atruthwomen have beenkept from us about thesethreedays, since I cameout, and thevessels of the youngmen areholy, and the bread is in amannercommon, yea, though it weresanctified thisday in thevessel.
So thepriestgave himhallowed bread: for there was nobread there but theshewbread, that wastaken frombefore theLORD, toputhotbread in theday when it was takenaway.
Now a certainman of theservants ofSaul was there thatday, detainedbefore theLORD; and hisname wasDoeg, anEdomite, thechiefest of theherdmen that belonged toSaul.
AndDavidsaid untoAhimelech, And istherenot here under thinehandspear orsword? for I have neitherbrought mysword nor myweapons withme, because theking'sbusinessrequiredhaste.
And thepriestsaid, Thesword ofGoliath thePhilistine, whom thouslewest in thevalley ofElah, behold, it is herewrapped in aclothbehind theephod: if thou wilttake that, take it: for there is noothersave thathere. AndDavidsaid, There is none like that;give it me.
And theservants ofAchishsaid unto him, Is not thisDavid theking of theland? did they notsing one to another ofhim indances, saying,Saul hathslain histhousands, andDavid his tenthousands?
AndDavid laidup thesewords in hisheart, and wassoreafraidofAchish theking ofGath.
And hechanged hisbehaviourbefore them, and feigned himselfmad in theirhands, andscrabbled on thedoors of thegate, and let hisspittle falldown upon hisbeard.
ThensaidAchish unto hisservants, Lo, yesee theman ismad: wherefore then have yebrought him to me?
Have Ineed of madmen, that ye havebrought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellowcome into myhouse?
