Chapter 26
KJV · Textus Receptus
And theZiphitescame untoSaul toGibeah, saying, Doth notDavidhide himself in thehill ofHachilah, which isbeforeJeshimon?
ThenSaularose, and wentdown to thewilderness ofZiph, havingthreethousandchosenmen ofIsrael with him, toseekDavid in thewilderness ofZiph.
AndSaulpitched in thehill ofHachilah, which isbeforeJeshimon, by theway. ButDavidabode in thewilderness, and hesaw thatSaulcameafter him into thewilderness.
David therefore sentoutspies, andunderstood thatSaul wascome in verydeed.
AndDavidarose, andcame to theplace whereSaul hadpitched: andDavidbeheld theplace whereSaullay, andAbner theson ofNer, thecaptain of hishost: andSaullay in thetrench, and thepeoplepitched roundabout him.
ThenansweredDavid andsaid toAhimelech theHittite, and toAbishai theson ofZeruiah, brother toJoab, saying, Who will godown with me toSaul to thecamp? AndAbishaisaid, I will godown with thee.
SoDavid andAbishaicame to thepeople bynight: and, behold,Saullaysleeping within thetrench, and hisspearstuck in theground at hisbolster: butAbner and thepeoplelay roundabout him.
ThensaidAbishai toDavid,God hathdelivered thineenemy into thinehand thisday: now therefore let mesmite him, I pray thee, with thespear even to theearth atonce, and I will not smite him the secondtime.
AndDavidsaid toAbishai,Destroy him not: for who can stretchforth hishand against theLORD'Sanointed, and beguiltless?
Davidsaid furthermore, As theLORDliveth, theLORD shallsmite him; or hisday shallcome todie; or he shalldescend intobattle, andperish.
TheLORDforbid that I should stretchforth minehand against theLORD'Sanointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now thespear that is at hisbolster, and thecruse ofwater, and let usgo.
SoDavidtook thespear and thecruse ofwater fromSaul'sbolster; and they gat themaway, and no mansaw it, norknew it, neitherawaked: for they were allasleep; because a deepsleep from theLORD wasfallen upon them.
ThenDavid wentover to the otherside, andstood on thetop of anhill afaroff; agreatspace being between them:
AndDavidcried to thepeople, and toAbner theson ofNer,saying,Answerest thou not,Abner? ThenAbneranswered andsaid, Who art thou thatcriest to theking?
AndDavidsaid toAbner, Art not thou a valiantman? and who is like to thee inIsrael? wherefore then hast thou notkept thylord theking? for therecameone of thepeople in todestroy theking thylord.
Thisthing is notgood that thou hastdone. As theLORDliveth, ye areworthy todie, because ye have notkept yourmaster, theLORD'Sanointed. And nowsee where theking'sspear is, and thecruse ofwater that was at hisbolster.
AndSaulknewDavid'svoice, andsaid, Is this thyvoice, mysonDavid? AndDavidsaid, It is myvoice, mylord, Oking.
And hesaid, Wherefore doth mylord thuspursueafter hisservant? for what have Idone? or whatevil is in minehand?
Now therefore, I pray thee, let mylord thekinghear thewords of hisservant. If theLORD have stirred theeup against me, let himaccept anoffering: but if they be thechildren ofmen, cursed be theybefore theLORD; for they havedriven me out thisday fromabiding in theinheritance of theLORD,saying,Go,serveothergods.
Now therefore, let not mybloodfall to theearth before theface of theLORD: for theking ofIsrael is comeout toseekaflea, as when one dothhunt apartridge in themountains.
ThensaidSaul, I havesinned:return, mysonDavid: for I will no more do theeharm, because mysoul wasprecious in thineeyes thisday: behold, I have played thefool, and haveerredexceedingly.
AndDavidanswered andsaid, Behold theking'sspear! and letone of the youngmen comeover andfetch it.
TheLORDrender to everyman hisrighteousness and hisfaithfulness: for theLORDdelivered thee into myhand today, but Iwould not stretchforth minehand against theLORD'Sanointed.
And, behold, as thylife was much setby thisday in mineeyes, so let mylife be much setby in theeyes of theLORD, and let himdeliver me out of alltribulation.
ThenSaulsaid toDavid,Blessed be thou, mysonDavid: thou shalt bothdogreat things, and also shaltstillprevail. SoDavidwent on hisway, andSaulreturned to hisplace.
