Chapter 28
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass in thosedays, that thePhilistinesgathered theirarmiestogether forwarfare, tofight withIsrael. AndAchishsaid untoDavid,Know thouassuredly, that thou shalt goout with me tobattle, thou and thymen.
AndDavidsaid toAchish,Surely thou shaltknow what thyservant cando. AndAchishsaid toDavid, Therefore will Imake theekeeper of minehead forever.
NowSamuel wasdead, and allIsrael hadlamented him, andburied him inRamah, even in his owncity. AndSaul had putaway those that had familiarspirits, and thewizards, out of theland.
And thePhilistines gathered themselvestogether, andcame andpitched inShunem: andSaulgathered allIsraeltogether, and theypitched inGilboa.
And whenSaulsaw thehost of thePhilistines, he wasafraid, and hisheartgreatlytrembled.
And whenSaulenquired of theLORD, theLORDanswered him not, neither bydreams, nor byUrim, nor byprophets.
ThensaidSaul unto hisservants,Seek me awoman thathath a familiarspirit, that I maygo to her, andenquire of her. And hisservantssaid to him, Behold, there is awoman thathath a familiarspirit atEndor.
AndSauldisguised himself, and putonotherraiment, and hewent, andtwomen with him, and theycame to thewoman bynight: and hesaid, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiarspirit, and bring me himup, whom I shallname unto thee.
And thewomansaid unto him, Behold, thouknowest whatSaul hathdone, how he hath cutoff those that have familiarspirits, and thewizards, out of theland: wherefore then layest thou asnare for mylife, to cause me todie?
AndSaulsware to her by theLORD,saying, As theLORDliveth, thereshall nopunishmenthappen to thee for thisthing.
Thensaid thewoman, Whom shall I bringup unto thee? And hesaid, Bring meupSamuel.
And when thewomansawSamuel, shecried with aloudvoice: and thewomanspake toSaul, saying, Why hast thoudeceived me? for thou artSaul.
And thekingsaid unto her, Be notafraid: for whatsawest thou? And thewomansaid untoSaul, Isawgodsascending out of theearth.
And hesaid unto her, Whatform is he of? And shesaid, Anoldman comethup; and he iscovered with amantle. AndSaulperceived that it wasSamuel, and hestooped with hisface to theground, andbowed himself.
AndSamuelsaid toSaul, Why hast thoudisquieted me, to bring meup? AndSaulanswered, I amsoredistressed; for thePhilistines makewar against me, andGod isdeparted from me, andanswereth me no more, neitherbyprophets, nor bydreams: therefore I havecalled thee, that thou mayest makeknown unto me what I shalldo.
ThensaidSamuel, Wherefore then dost thouask of me, seeing theLORD isdeparted from thee, and is become thineenemy?
And theLORD hathdone to him, as hespake byme: for theLORD hathrent thekingdom out of thinehand, andgiven it to thyneighbour, even toDavid:
Because thouobeyedst not thevoice of theLORD, norexecutedst hisfiercewrath uponAmalek, therefore hath theLORDdone thisthing unto thee thisday.
Moreover theLORD will alsodeliverIsrael with thee into thehand of thePhilistines: and tomorrow shalt thou and thysons be with me: theLORD also shalldeliver thehost ofIsrael into thehand of thePhilistines.
ThenSaulfellstraightwayallalong on theearth, and wassoreafraid, because of thewords ofSamuel: and there was nostrength in him; for he hadeaten nobread all theday, nor all thenight.
And thewomancame untoSaul, andsaw that he wassoretroubled, andsaid unto him, Behold, thinehandmaid hathobeyed thyvoice, and I haveput mylife in myhand, and havehearkened unto thywords which thouspakest unto me.
Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto thevoice of thinehandmaid, and let meset amorsel ofbreadbefore thee; andeat, that thou mayest havestrength, when thougoest on thyway.
But herefused, andsaid, I will noteat. But hisservants, together with thewoman, compelled him; and hehearkened unto theirvoice. So hearose from theearth, andsat upon thebed.
And thewoman had afatcalf in thehouse; and shehasted, andkilled it, andtookflour, andkneaded it, and didbake unleavenedbread thereof:
And shebrought itbeforeSaul, andbefore hisservants; and they dideat. Then they roseup, and wentaway thatnight.
