Chronicles
Chapter 20
KJV · Textus Receptus
It came to pass afterthis also, that thechildren ofMoab, and thechildren ofAmmon, and with them other beside theAmmonites,came againstJehoshaphat tobattle.
Then therecame some thattoldJehoshaphat,saying, Therecometh agreatmultitude against thee frombeyond thesea on this sideSyria; and, behold, they be inHazazontamar, which isEngedi.
AndJudah gathered themselvestogether, toask help of theLORD: even out of all thecities ofJudah theycame toseek theLORD.
AndJehoshaphatstood in thecongregation ofJudah andJerusalem, in thehouse of theLORD,before thenewcourt,
Andsaid, OLORDGod of ourfathers, art not thouGod inheaven? andrulest not thou over all thekingdoms of theheathen? and in thinehand is there notpower andmight, so that none is able towithstand thee?
Art not thou ourGod, who didst driveout theinhabitants of thislandbefore thypeopleIsrael, andgavest it to theseed ofAbraham thyfriend forever?
And theydwelt therein, and havebuilt thee asanctuary therein for thyname,saying,
If, whenevilcometh upon us, as thesword,judgment, orpestilence, orfamine, westandbefore thishouse, and in thypresence, (for thyname is in thishouse,) andcry unto thee in ouraffliction, then thou wilthear andhelp.
And now, behold, thechildren ofAmmon andMoab andmountSeir, whom thou wouldest notletIsraelinvade, when they cameout of theland ofEgypt, but theyturned from them, anddestroyed them not;
Behold, I say, how theyreward us, tocome to cast usout of thypossession, which thou hast given us toinherit.
O ourGod, wilt thou notjudge them? for we have nomightagainst thisgreatcompany thatcometh against us; neitherknowwe what todo: but oureyes are upon thee.
And allJudahstoodbefore theLORD,with their littleones, theirwives, and theirchildren.
Then uponJahaziel theson ofZechariah, theson ofBenaiah, theson ofJeiel, theson ofMattaniah, aLevite of thesons ofAsaph, came theSpirit of theLORD in themidst of thecongregation;
And hesaid,Hearken ye, allJudah, and yeinhabitants ofJerusalem, and thoukingJehoshaphat, Thussaith theLORD unto you, Be notafraid nordismayed byreason of thisgreatmultitude; for thebattle is not yours, butGod's.
Tomorrow go yedown against them: behold, they comeup by thecliff ofZiz; and ye shallfind them at theend of thebrook,before thewilderness ofJeruel.
Ye shall not need tofight inthis battle:set yourselves,stand ye still, andsee thesalvation of theLORD with you, OJudah andJerusalem:fear not, nor bedismayed; tomorrow gooutagainst them: for theLORD will be with you.
AndJehoshaphatbowed his head with hisface to theground: and allJudah and theinhabitants ofJerusalemfellbefore theLORD,worshipping theLORD.
And theLevites, of thechildren of theKohathites, and of thechildren of theKorhites, stoodup topraise theLORDGod ofIsrael with aloudvoice onhigh.
And they roseearly in themorning, and wentforth into thewilderness ofTekoa: and as they wentforth,Jehoshaphatstood andsaid,Hear me, OJudah, and yeinhabitants ofJerusalem;Believe in theLORD yourGod, so shall ye beestablished;believe hisprophets, so shall yeprosper.
And when he hadconsulted with thepeople, heappointedsingers unto theLORD, and that shouldpraise thebeauty ofholiness, as they wentoutbefore thearmy, and tosay,Praise theLORD; for hismercy endureth forever.
Andwhen theybegan tosing and topraise, theLORDsetambushments against thechildren ofAmmon,Moab, andmountSeir, which werecome againstJudah; and they weresmitten.
For thechildren ofAmmon andMoab stoodup against theinhabitants ofmountSeir, utterly toslay anddestroy them: and when they had made anend of theinhabitants ofSeir, everyonehelped todestroyanother.
And whenJudahcame toward the watchtower in thewilderness, theylooked unto themultitude, and, behold, they were deadbodiesfallen to theearth, and noneescaped.
And whenJehoshaphat and hispeoplecame to takeaway thespoil of them, theyfound among them inabundance bothriches with the deadbodies, andpreciousjewels, which they strippedoff for themselves, morethan they could carryaway: and they werethreedays ingathering of thespoil, it was somuch.
And on thefourthday theyassembled themselves in thevalley ofBerachah; for there theyblessed theLORD: therefore thename of the sameplace wascalled, Thevalley ofBerachah, unto thisday.
Then theyreturned, everyman ofJudah andJerusalem, andJehoshaphat in theforefront of them, to goagain toJerusalem withjoy; for theLORD had made them torejoice over theirenemies.
And theycame toJerusalem withpsalteries andharps andtrumpets unto thehouse of theLORD.
And thefear ofGod was on all thekingdoms of thosecountries, when they hadheard that theLORDfought against theenemies ofIsrael.
So therealm ofJehoshaphat wasquiet: for hisGod gave himrest roundabout.
AndJehoshaphatreigned overJudah: he wasthirty andfiveyearsold when he began toreign, and hereignedtwenty andfiveyears inJerusalem. And hismother'sname wasAzubah thedaughter ofShilhi.
And hewalked in theway ofAsa hisfather, anddeparted not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.
Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.
And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:
And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber.
Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
