Chapter 29
KJV · Textus Receptus
Hezekiah began toreign when he wasfive andtwentyyearsold, and hereignednine andtwentyyears inJerusalem. And hismother'sname wasAbijah, thedaughter ofZechariah.
And hedid that which wasright in thesight of theLORD, according to all thatDavid hisfather haddone.
He in thefirstyear of hisreign, in thefirstmonth, opened thedoors of thehouse of theLORD, andrepaired them.
And he broughtin thepriests and theLevites, and gathered themtogether into theeaststreet,
Andsaid unto them,Hear me, yeLevites, sanctify now yourselves, andsanctify thehouse of theLORDGod of yourfathers, and carryforth thefilthiness out of theholy place.
For ourfathers havetrespassed, anddone that which wasevil in theeyes of theLORD ourGod, and haveforsaken him, and have turnedaway theirfaces from thehabitation of theLORD, andturned theirbacks.
Also they have shutup thedoors of theporch, and putout thelamps, and have notburnedincense noroffered burntofferings in theholy place unto theGod ofIsrael.
Wherefore thewrath of theLORD was uponJudah andJerusalem, and he hathdelivered them totrouble, toastonishment, and tohissing, as yesee with youreyes.
For, lo, ourfathers havefallen by thesword, and oursons and ourdaughters and ourwives are incaptivity for this.
Now it is in mineheart tomake acovenant with theLORDGod ofIsrael, that hisfiercewrath may turnaway from us.
Mysons, be not nownegligent: for theLORD hathchosen you tostandbefore him, toserve him, and that ye shouldminister unto him, and burnincense.
Then theLevitesarose,Mahath theson ofAmasai, andJoel theson ofAzariah, of thesons of theKohathites: and of thesons ofMerari,Kish theson ofAbdi, andAzariah theson ofJehalelel: and of theGershonites;Joah theson ofZimmah, andEden theson ofJoah:
And of thesons ofElizaphan;Shimri, andJeiel: and of thesons ofAsaph;Zechariah, andMattaniah:
And of thesons ofHeman;Jehiel, andShimei: and of thesons ofJeduthun;Shemaiah, andUzziel.
And theygathered theirbrethren, andsanctified themselves, andcame, according to thecommandment of theking, by thewords of theLORD, tocleanse thehouse of theLORD.
And thepriestswent into the innerpart of thehouse of theLORD, tocleanse it, and broughtout all theuncleanness that theyfound in thetemple of theLORD into thecourt of thehouse of theLORD. And theLevitestook it, to carry itoutabroad into thebrookKidron.
Now theybegan on thefirst day of thefirstmonth tosanctify, and on theeighthday of themonthcame they to theporch of theLORD: so theysanctified thehouse of theLORD ineightdays; and in thesixteenth day of thefirstmonth they made anend.
Then theywentin toHezekiah theking, andsaid, We havecleansed all thehouse of theLORD, and thealtar of burntoffering, with all thevessels thereof, and theshewbreadtable, with all thevessels thereof.
Moreover all thevessels, whichkingAhaz in hisreign did castaway in histransgression, have weprepared andsanctified, and, behold, they arebefore thealtar of theLORD.
ThenHezekiah theking roseearly, andgathered therulers of thecity, and wentup to thehouse of theLORD.
And theybroughtsevenbullocks, andsevenrams, andsevenlambs, andsevenhegoats, for a sinoffering for thekingdom, and for thesanctuary, and forJudah. And hecommanded thepriests thesons ofAaron tooffer them on thealtar of theLORD.
So theykilled thebullocks, and thepriestsreceived theblood, andsprinkled it on thealtar: likewise, when they hadkilled therams, theysprinkled theblood upon thealtar: theykilled also thelambs, and theysprinkled theblood upon thealtar.
And they broughtforth the hegoats for the sinofferingbefore theking and thecongregation; and theylaid theirhands upon them:
And thepriestskilled them, and they madereconciliation with theirblood upon thealtar, to make anatonement for allIsrael: for thekingcommanded that the burntoffering and the sinoffering should be made for allIsrael.
And heset theLevites in thehouse of theLORD withcymbals, withpsalteries, and withharps, according to thecommandment ofDavid, and ofGad theking'sseer, andNathan theprophet: for so was thecommandmentof theLORDby hisprophets.
And theLevitesstood with theinstruments ofDavid, and thepriests with thetrumpets.
AndHezekiahcommanded tooffer the burntoffering upon thealtar. Andwhen the burntofferingbegan, thesong of theLORDbegan also with thetrumpets, and with theinstruments ordainedbyDavidking ofIsrael.
And all thecongregationworshipped, and thesingerssang, and thetrumpeterssounded: and all this continued until the burntoffering wasfinished.
And when they had made anend ofoffering, theking and all that werepresent with himbowed themselves, andworshipped.
MoreoverHezekiah theking and theprincescommanded theLevites to singpraise unto theLORD with thewords ofDavid, and ofAsaph theseer. And they sangpraises withgladness, and they bowed theirheads andworshipped.
ThenHezekiahanswered andsaid, Now ye haveconsecrated yourselves unto theLORD, comenear andbringsacrifices and thankofferings into thehouse of theLORD. And thecongregation broughtinsacrifices and thankofferings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.
And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD.
And the consecrated things were six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.
And also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order.
And Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
