Chapter 17
KJV · Textus Receptus
In thetwelfthyear ofAhazking ofJudah beganHoshea theson ofElah toreign inSamaria overIsraelnineyears.
And hedid that which wasevil in thesight of theLORD, but not as thekings ofIsrael that werebefore him.
Against him cameupShalmaneserking ofAssyria; andHoshea became hisservant, andgave himpresents.
And theking ofAssyriafoundconspiracy inHoshea: for he hadsentmessengers toSoking ofEgypt, andbrought nopresent to theking ofAssyria, as he had doneyear byyear: therefore theking ofAssyria shut himup, andbound him inprison.
Then theking ofAssyria cameup throughout all theland, and wentup toSamaria, andbesieged itthreeyears.
In theninthyear ofHoshea theking ofAssyriatookSamaria, andcarriedIsraelaway intoAssyria, andplaced them inHalah and inHabor by theriver ofGozan, and in thecities of theMedes.
For so it was, that thechildren ofIsrael hadsinned against theLORD theirGod, which had brought themup out of theland ofEgypt, from under thehand ofPharaohking ofEgypt, and hadfearedothergods,
Andwalked in thestatutes of theheathen, whom theLORD castout frombefore thechildren ofIsrael, and of thekings ofIsrael, which they hadmade.
And thechildren ofIsrael didsecretly thosethings that were not right against theLORD theirGod, and theybuilt them highplaces in all theircities, from thetower of thewatchmen to thefencedcity.
And they set themupimages andgroves in everyhighhill, and under everygreentree:
And there they burntincense in all the highplaces, as did theheathen whom theLORD carriedawaybefore them; andwroughtwickedthings to provoke theLORD toanger:
For theyservedidols, whereof theLORD hadsaid unto them, Ye shall notdo thisthing.
Yet theLORDtestified againstIsrael, and againstJudah,by all theprophets, and by all theseers, saying,Turn ye from yourevilways, andkeep mycommandments and mystatutes, according to all thelaw which Icommanded yourfathers, and which Isent to youby myservants theprophets.
Notwithstanding they would nothear, buthardened theirnecks, like to theneck of theirfathers, that did notbelieve in theLORD theirGod.
And theyrejected hisstatutes, and hiscovenant that hemade with theirfathers, and histestimonies which hetestified against them; and theyfollowedvanity, and becamevain, and wentafter theheathen that were roundabout them, concerning whom theLORD hadcharged them, that they should notdo like them.
And theyleft all thecommandments of theLORD theirGod, andmade them moltenimages, eventwocalves, andmade agrove, andworshipped all thehost ofheaven, andservedBaal.
And they caused theirsons and theirdaughters topass through thefire, anduseddivination andenchantments, andsold themselves todoevil in thesight of theLORD, to provoke him toanger.
Therefore theLORD wasveryangry withIsrael, andremoved them out of hissight: there was noneleft but thetribe ofJudah only.
AlsoJudahkept not thecommandments of theLORD theirGod, butwalked in thestatutes ofIsrael which theymade.
And theLORDrejected all theseed ofIsrael, andafflicted them, anddelivered them into thehand ofspoilers, until he hadcast them out of hissight.
For herentIsrael from thehouse ofDavid; and they madeJeroboam theson ofNebatking: andJeroboamdraveIsrael fromfollowing theLORD, and made themsin agreatsin.
For thechildren ofIsraelwalked in all thesins ofJeroboam which hedid; theydeparted not from them;
Until theLORDremovedIsrael out of hissight, as he hadsaidby all hisservants theprophets. So wasIsrael carriedaway out of their ownland toAssyria unto thisday.
And theking ofAssyriabrought men fromBabylon, and fromCuthah, and fromAva, and fromHamath, and fromSepharvaim, andplaced them in thecities ofSamaria instead of thechildren ofIsrael: and theypossessedSamaria, anddwelt in thecities thereof.
And so it was at thebeginning of theirdwelling there, that theyfeared not theLORD: therefore theLORDsentlions among them, whichslew some of them.
Wherefore theyspake to theking ofAssyria, saying, Thenations which thou hastremoved, andplaced in thecities ofSamaria, know not themanner of theGod of theland: therefore he hathsentlions among them, and, behold, theyslay them, because theyknow not themanner of theGod of theland.
Then theking ofAssyriacommanded, saying,Carry thitherone of thepriests whom yebrought from thence; and let themgo anddwell there, and let himteach them themanner of theGod of theland.
Thenone of thepriests whom they had carriedaway fromSamariacame anddwelt inBethel, andtaught them how they shouldfear theLORD.
Howbeit everynationmadegods of their own, andput them in thehouses of the highplaces which theSamaritans hadmade, everynation in theircities wherein theydwelt.
And themen ofBabylonmadeSuccothbenoth, and themen ofCuthmadeNergal, and themen ofHamathmadeAshima,
And theAvitesmadeNibhaz andTartak, and theSepharvitesburnt theirchildren infire toAdrammelech andAnammelech, thegods ofSepharvaim.
So theyfeared theLORD, andmade unto themselves of thelowest of thempriests of the highplaces, whichsacrificed for them in the high places.
They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.
And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.
So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.
