KJV · Textus Receptus
And thesons of theprophetssaiduntoElisha, Behold now, theplace where wedwell with thee is toostrait for us.
Let usgo, we pray thee, untoJordan, andtake thence everymanabeam, and let usmake us aplace there, where we maydwell. And heanswered,Go ye.
Andonesaid, Becontent, I pray thee, andgo with thyservants. And heanswered, I willgo.
So hewent with them. And when theycame toJordan, they cutdownwood.
But asone wasfelling abeam, the axeheadfell into thewater: and hecried, andsaid,Alas, master! for it wasborrowed.
And theman ofGodsaid,Wherefell it? And heshewed him theplace. And he cutdown astick, andcast it in thither; and theiron didswim.
Thereforesaid he, Take itup to thee. And he putout hishand, andtook it.
Then theking ofSyriawarred againstIsrael, and tookcounsel with hisservants, saying, Insuch andsuch aplace shall be mycamp.
And theman ofGodsent unto theking ofIsrael, saying,Beware that thoupass notsuch aplace; for thither theSyrians are comedown.
And theking ofIsraelsent to theplace which theman ofGodtold him andwarned him of, andsaved himself there, notonce nortwice.
Therefore theheart of theking ofSyria was soretroubled for thisthing; and hecalled hisservants, andsaid unto them, Will ye notshew me which of us is for theking ofIsrael?
Andone of hisservantssaid, None, mylord, Oking: butElisha, theprophet that is inIsrael, telleth theking ofIsrael thewords that thouspeakest in thybedchamber.
And hesaid,Go andspywhere he is, that I maysend andfetch him. And it wastold him, saying, Behold, he is inDothan.
Thereforesent he thitherhorses, andchariots, and agreathost: and theycame bynight, andcompassed thecityabout.
And when theservant of theman ofGod wasrisenearly, and goneforth, behold, anhostcompassed thecity both withhorses andchariots. And hisservantsaid unto him,Alas, mymaster! how shall wedo?
And heanswered,Fear not: for they that be with us aremore than they that be with them.
AndElishaprayed, andsaid,LORD, I pray thee, open hiseyes, that he maysee. And theLORDopened theeyes of the youngman; and hesaw: and, behold, themountain wasfull ofhorses andchariots offire roundaboutElisha.
And when they camedown to him,Elishaprayed unto theLORD, andsaid,Smite thispeople, I pray thee, withblindness. And hesmote them withblindness according to theword ofElisha.
AndElishasaid unto them, This is not theway, neither isthis thecity:follow me, and I willbring you to theman whom yeseek. But heled them toSamaria.
And it came to pass, when they werecome intoSamaria, thatElishasaid,LORD,open theeyes of these men, that they maysee. And theLORDopened theireyes, and theysaw; and, behold, they were in themidst ofSamaria.
And theking ofIsraelsaid untoElisha, when hesaw them, Myfather, shall Ismite them? shall Ismite them?
And heanswered, Thou shalt notsmite them: wouldest thousmite those whom thou hast takencaptive with thysword and with thybow?setbread andwaterbefore them, that they mayeat anddrink, andgo to theirmaster.
And hepreparedgreatprovision for them: and when they hadeaten anddrunk, he sent themaway, and theywent to theirmaster. So thebands ofSyriacame nomore into theland ofIsrael.
And it came to pass afterthis, thatBenhadadking ofSyriagathered all hishost, and wentup, andbesiegedSamaria.
And there was agreatfamine inSamaria: and, behold, theybesieged it, until anass'shead was sold forfourscore pieces ofsilver, and the fourthpart of acab of dove'sdung forfive pieces ofsilver.
And as theking ofIsrael was passingby upon thewall, therecried awoman unto him, saying,Help, mylord, Oking.
And hesaid, If theLORD do nothelp thee, whence shall Ihelp thee? out of thebarnfloor, or out of thewinepress?
And thekingsaid unto her, What aileth thee? And sheanswered, Thiswomansaid unto me,Give thyson, that we mayeat him today, and we willeat myson tomorrow.
So weboiled myson, and dideat him: and Isaid unto her on thenextday,Give thyson, that we mayeat him: and she hathhid herson.
And it came to pass, when thekingheard thewords of thewoman, that herent hisclothes; and he passedby upon thewall, and thepeoplelooked, and, behold, he hadsackclothwithin upon hisflesh.
Then hesaid,Goddo so andmore also to me, if thehead ofElisha theson ofShaphat shallstand on him thisday.
ButElishasat in hishouse, and theelderssat with him; and the kingsent aman frombefore him: but ere themessengercame to him, hesaid to theelders,See ye how thisson of amurderer hathsent to takeaway minehead?look, when themessengercometh, shut thedoor, and hold himfast at thedoor: is not thesound of hismaster'sfeetbehind him?
And while he yettalked with them, behold, themessenger camedown unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
