Chapter 13
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to passafter this, thatAbsalom theson ofDavid had afairsister, whosename wasTamar; andAmnon theson ofDavidloved her.
AndAmnon was sovexed, that he fellsick for hissisterTamar; for she was avirgin; andAmnonthought ithard for him todo anything to her.
ButAmnon had afriend, whosename wasJonadab, theson ofShimeahDavid'sbrother: andJonadab was averysubtilman.
And hesaid unto him, Why art thou, being theking'sson, lean fromday today? wilt thou nottell me? AndAmnonsaid unto him, IloveTamar, mybrotherAbsalom'ssister.
AndJonadabsaid unto him, Lay theedown on thybed, and make thyselfsick: and when thyfathercometh tosee thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let mysisterTamarcome, andgive memeat, anddress themeat in mysight, that I maysee it, andeat it at herhand.
SoAmnon laydown, and made himselfsick: and when theking wascome tosee him,Amnonsaid unto theking, I pray thee, letTamar mysistercome, andmake me acouple ofcakes in mysight, that I mayeat at herhand.
ThenDavidsenthome toTamar, saying,Go now to thybrotherAmnon'shouse, anddress himmeat.
SoTamarwent to herbrotherAmnon'shouse; and he was laiddown. And shetookflour, andkneaded it, and madecakes in hissight, and didbake thecakes.
And shetook apan, and poured themoutbefore him; but herefused toeat. AndAmnonsaid, Haveout allmen from me. And they wentout everyman from him.
AndAmnonsaid untoTamar,Bring themeat into thechamber, that I mayeat of thinehand. AndTamartook thecakes which she hadmade, andbrought them into thechamber toAmnon herbrother.
And when she hadbrought them unto him toeat, he tookhold of her, andsaid unto her,Comelie with me, mysister.
And sheanswered him, Nay, mybrother, do notforce me; for no such thingought to bedone inIsrael:do not thou thisfolly.
And I, whither shall I cause myshame togo? and as for thee, thou shalt be asone of thefools inIsrael. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto theking; for he will notwithhold me from thee.
Howbeit hewould nothearken unto hervoice: but, beingstronger than she, forced her, andlay with her.
ThenAmnonhated herexceedingly; so that thehatred wherewith hehated her wasgreater than thelove wherewith he hadloved her. AndAmnonsaid unto her,Arise, begone.
And shesaid unto him, There is nocause: thisevil in sending meaway isgreater than theother that thoudidst unto me. But hewould nothearken unto her.
Then hecalled hisservant thatministered unto him, andsaid,Put now this womanout from me, andbolt thedoorafter her.
And she had agarment of diverscolours upon her: for with suchrobes were theking'sdaughters that werevirginsapparelled. Then hisservantbrought herout, andbolted thedoorafter her.
AndTamarputashes on herhead, andrent hergarment of diverscolours that was on her, andlaid herhand on herhead, andwentoncrying.
AndAbsalom herbrothersaid unto her, HathAmnon thybrother been with thee? but hold now thypeace, mysister: he is thybrother;regard not thisthing. SoTamarremaineddesolate in herbrotherAbsalom'shouse.
But whenkingDavidheard of all thesethings, he wasverywroth.
AndAbsalomspake unto his brotherAmnon neithergood norbad: forAbsalomhatedAmnon, because he hadforced hissisterTamar.
And it came to pass after twofullyears, thatAbsalom hadsheepshearers inBaalhazor, which is besideEphraim: andAbsalominvited all theking'ssons.
AndAbsalomcame to theking, andsaid, Behold now, thyservant hathsheepshearers;let theking, I beseech thee, and hisservantsgo with thyservant.
And thekingsaid toAbsalom, Nay, myson, let us not all nowgo, lest we bechargeable unto thee. And hepressed him: howbeit hewould notgo, butblessed him.
ThensaidAbsalom, If not, I pray thee, let mybrotherAmnongo with us. And thekingsaid unto him, Why should hego with thee?
ButAbsalompressed him, that he letAmnon and all theking'ssonsgo with him.
NowAbsalom hadcommanded hisservants, saying,Mark ye now whenAmnon'sheart ismerry withwine, and when Isay unto you,SmiteAmnon; thenkill him, fear not: have not Icommanded you? becourageous, and bevaliant.
And theservants ofAbsalomdid untoAmnon asAbsalom hadcommanded. Then all theking'ssonsarose, and everyman gat himup upon hismule, andfled.
And it came to pass, while they were in theway, thattidingscame toDavid, saying,Absalom hathslain all theking'ssons, and there is notone of themleft.
Then thekingarose, andtare hisgarments, andlay on theearth; and all hisservantsstood by with theirclothesrent.
AndJonadab, theson ofShimeahDavid'sbrother, answered andsaid, Let not mylordsuppose that they haveslain all the youngmen theking'ssons; forAmnon only isdead: for by theappointment ofAbsalom this hath beendetermined from theday that heforced hissisterTamar.
Now therefore let not mylord thekingtake thething to hisheart, tothink that all theking'ssons aredead:
But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.
But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.
So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.
And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
