Chapter 14
KJV · Textus Receptus
NowJoab theson ofZeruiahperceived that theking'sheart was towardAbsalom.
AndJoabsent toTekoah, andfetched thence awisewoman, andsaid unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be amourner, and puton nowmourningapparel, andanoint not thyself withoil, but be as awoman that had alongtimemourned for thedead:
Andcome to theking, andspeak on thismanner unto him. SoJoabput thewords in hermouth.
And when thewoman ofTekoahspake to theking, shefell on herface to theground, and didobeisance, andsaid,Help, Oking.
And thekingsaid unto her, What aileth thee? And sheanswered, I amindeed awidowwoman, and minehusband isdead.
And thyhandmaid hadtwosons, and theytwo strovetogether in thefield, and there was none topart them, but theonesmote theother, andslew him.
And, behold, the wholefamily isrisen against thinehandmaid, and theysaid,Deliver him thatsmote hisbrother, that we maykill him, for thelife of hisbrother whom heslew; and we willdestroy theheir also: and so they shallquench mycoal which isleft, and shall notleave to myhusband neithername norremainderupon theearth.
And thekingsaid unto thewoman,Go to thinehouse, and I will givecharge concerning thee.
And thewoman ofTekoahsaid unto theking, Mylord, Oking, theiniquity be on me, and on myfather'shouse: and theking and histhrone beguiltless.
And thekingsaid, Whosoeversaith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall nottouch thee anymore.
Thensaid she, I pray thee, let thekingremember theLORD thyGod, that thou wouldest not suffer therevengers ofblood todestroy anymore, lest theydestroy myson. And hesaid, As theLORDliveth, there shall not onehair of thysonfall to theearth.
Then thewomansaid, Let thinehandmaid, I pray thee, speak oneword unto mylord theking. And hesaid, Sayon.
And thewomansaid, Wherefore then hast thouthought such a thing against thepeople ofGod? for theking dothspeak thisthing as one which isfaulty, in that theking doth not fetch homeagain hisbanished.
For we mustneedsdie, and are aswaterspilt on theground, which cannot be gathered upagain; neither dothGodrespect anyperson: yet doth hedevisemeans, that hisbanished be notexpelled from him.
Now therefore that I amcome tospeak of thisthing unto mylord theking, it is because thepeople have made meafraid: and thyhandmaidsaid, I will nowspeak unto theking; it may be that theking willperform therequest of hishandmaid.
For theking willhear, todeliver hishandmaid out of thehand of theman that woulddestroy me and mysontogether out of theinheritance ofGod.
Then thinehandmaidsaid, Theword of mylord theking shall now becomfortable: for as anangel ofGod, so is mylord theking todiscerngood andbad: therefore theLORD thyGod will be with thee.
Then thekinganswered andsaid unto thewoman,Hide not from me, I pray thee, thething that I shallask thee. And thewomansaid, Let mylord theking nowspeak.
And thekingsaid, Is not thehand ofJoab with thee in all this? And thewomananswered andsaid, As thysoulliveth, mylord theking, nonecan turn to the righthand or to theleft from ought that mylord theking hathspoken: for thyservantJoab, hebade me, and heput all thesewords in themouth of thinehandmaid:
To fetchabout thisform ofspeech hath thyservantJoabdone thisthing: and mylord iswise, according to thewisdom of anangel ofGod, toknow all things that are in theearth.
And thekingsaid untoJoab, Behold now, I havedone thisthing:go therefore, bring the youngmanAbsalomagain.
AndJoabfell to theground on hisface, andbowed himself, andthanked theking: andJoabsaid, Today thyservantknoweth that I havefoundgrace in thysight, mylord, Oking, in that theking hathfulfilled therequest of hisservant.
And thekingsaid, Let himturn to his ownhouse, and let him notsee myface. SoAbsalomreturned to his ownhouse, andsaw not theking'sface.
But in allIsrael there wasnone to be somuchpraised asAbsalom for hisbeauty: from thesole of hisfoot even to the crown of hishead there was noblemish in him.
And when hepolled hishead, (for it was at everyyear'send that hepolled it: because the hair washeavy on him, therefore hepolled it:) heweighed thehair of hishead at twohundredshekels after theking'sweight.
And untoAbsalom there werebornthreesons, andonedaughter, whosename wasTamar: she was awoman of afaircountenance.
SoAbsalomdwelt twofullyears inJerusalem, andsaw not theking'sface.
ThereforeAbsalomsent forJoab, to havesent him to theking; but hewould notcome to him: and when he sentagain the secondtime, hewould notcome.
Therefore hesaid unto hisservants,See,Joab'sfield isnearmine, and he hathbarley there;go andset it onfire. AndAbsalom'sservantsset thefield onfire.
ThenJoab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
