Chapter 19
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it wastoldJoab, Behold, thekingweepeth andmourneth forAbsalom.
And thevictory thatday was turned intomourning unto all thepeople: for thepeopleheardsay thatday how theking wasgrieved for hisson.
And thepeoplegat them bystealth thatday into thecity, aspeople beingashamed stealaway when theyflee inbattle.
But thekingcovered hisface, and thekingcried with aloudvoice, O mysonAbsalom, OAbsalom, myson, myson!
AndJoabcame into thehouse to theking, andsaid, Thou hastshamed thisday thefaces of all thyservants, which thisday havesaved thylife, and thelives of thysons and of thydaughters, and thelives of thywives, and thelives of thyconcubines;
In that thoulovest thineenemies, andhatest thyfriends. For thou hastdeclared thisday, that thou regardest neitherprinces norservants: for thisday Iperceive, thatifAbsalom hadlived, and all we haddied thisday, then it had pleased theewell.
Now thereforearise, goforth, andspeakcomfortably unto thyservants: for Iswear by theLORD, if thou go notforth, there will nottarryone with thee thisnight: and that will beworse unto thee than all theevil thatbefell thee from thyyouth until now.
Then thekingarose, andsat in thegate. And theytold unto all thepeople, saying, Behold, theking dothsit in thegate. And all thepeoplecamebefore theking: forIsrael hadfled everyman to histent.
And all thepeople were atstrife throughout all thetribes ofIsrael, saying, Thekingsaved us out of thehand of ourenemies, and hedelivered us out of thehand of thePhilistines; and now he isfled out of theland forAbsalom.
AndAbsalom, whom weanointed over us, isdead inbattle. Now therefore whyspeak ye not a word ofbringing thekingback?
AndkingDavidsent toZadok and toAbiathar thepriests, saying,Speak unto theelders ofJudah, saying, Why are ye thelast tobring thekingback to hishouse? seeing thespeech of allIsrael iscome to theking, even to hishouse.
Ye are mybrethren, ye are mybones and myflesh: wherefore then are ye thelast to bringback theking?
Andsay ye toAmasa, Art thou not of mybone, and of myflesh?Goddo so to me, andmore also, if thou be notcaptain of thehostbefore mecontinually in theroom ofJoab.
And hebowed theheart of all themen ofJudah, even as the heart ofoneman; so that theysent this word unto theking,Return thou, and all thyservants.
AndShimei theson ofGera, aBenjamite, which was ofBahurim, hasted and camedown with themen ofJudah tomeetkingDavid.
And there were athousandmen ofBenjamin with him, andZiba theservant of thehouse ofSaul, and hisfifteensons and histwentyservants with him; and they wentoverJordanbefore theking.
And there wentover a ferryboat to carryover theking'shousehold, and todo what hethoughtgood. AndShimei theson ofGera felldownbefore theking, as he was comeoverJordan;
Andsaid unto theking, Let not mylordimputeiniquity unto me, neither do thouremember that which thyservant didperversely theday that mylord theking wentout ofJerusalem, that theking shouldtake it to hisheart.
For thyservant dothknow that I havesinned: therefore, behold, I amcome thefirst thisday of all thehouse ofJoseph to godown tomeet mylord theking.
ButAbishai theson ofZeruiahanswered andsaid, Shall notShimei be put todeath for this, because hecursed theLORD'Sanointed?
AndDavidsaid, What have I to do with you, yesons ofZeruiah, that ye should thisday beadversaries unto me? shall there anyman be put todeath thisday inIsrael? for do not Iknow that I am thisdayking overIsrael?
AndMephibosheth theson ofSaul camedown tomeet theking, and hadneitherdressed hisfeet, nortrimmed hisbeard, norwashed hisclothes, from theday thekingdeparted until theday hecame again inpeace.
And it came to pass, when he wascome toJerusalem tomeet theking, that thekingsaid unto him, Whereforewentest not thou with me,Mephibosheth?
And heanswered, Mylord, Oking, myservantdeceived me: for thyservantsaid, I willsaddle me anass, that I mayride thereon, andgo to theking; because thyservant islame.
And he hathslandered thyservant unto mylord theking; but mylord theking is as anangel ofGod:do therefore what isgood in thineeyes.
For all of myfather'shouse werebutdeadmen before mylord theking: yet didst thouset thyservant among them that dideat at thine owntable. Whatright thereforehave I yet tocry any more unto theking?
And thekingsaid unto him, Whyspeakest thou any more of thymatters? I havesaid, Thou andZibadivide theland.
AndMephiboshethsaid unto theking, Yea, let himtake all, forasmuchas mylord theking is comeagain in peace unto his own house.
And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?
I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David's men with him, over Jordan?
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king's cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
