And it came to pass afterthis, thatDavidenquired of theLORD,saying, Shall I goup intoany of thecities ofJudah? And theLORDsaid unto him, Goup. AndDavidsaid, Whither shall I goup? And hesaid, UntoHebron.
SoDavid wentup thither, and histwowives also,Ahinoam theJezreelitess, andAbigailNabal'swife theCarmelite.
And hismen that were with him didDavid bringup, everyman with hishousehold: and theydwelt in thecities ofHebron.
And themen ofJudahcame, and there theyanointedDavidking over thehouse ofJudah. And theytoldDavid, saying, That themen ofJabeshgilead were they thatburiedSaul.
AndDavidsentmessengers unto themen ofJabeshgilead, andsaid unto them,Blessed be ye of theLORD, that ye haveshewed thiskindness unto yourlord, even untoSaul, and haveburied him.
And now theLORDshewkindness andtruth unto you: and I also willrequite you thiskindness, because ye havedone thisthing.
Therefore now let yourhands bestrengthened, and be yevaliant: for yourmasterSaul isdead, and also thehouse ofJudah haveanointed meking over them.
AndJoab theson ofZeruiah, and theservants ofDavid, wentout, andmettogether by thepool ofGibeon: and they satdown, the one on the one side of thepool, and the other on the other side of thepool.
AndAbnersaid toJoab, Let the youngmen nowarise, andplaybefore us. AndJoabsaid, Let themarise.
Then therearose and wentover bynumbertwelve ofBenjamin, which pertained toIshbosheth theson ofSaul, andtwelve of theservants ofDavid.
And theycaught everyone hisfellow by thehead, and thrust hissword in hisfellow'sside; so they felldowntogether: wherefore thatplace wascalledHelkathhazzurim, which is inGibeon.
And there was averysorebattle thatday; andAbner wasbeaten, and themen ofIsrael, before theservants ofDavid.
And there werethreesons ofZeruiah there,Joab, andAbishai, andAsahel: andAsahel was aslight offoot asawildroe.
AndAsahelpursuedafterAbner; and ingoing heturned not to the righthand nor to theleft fromfollowingAbner.
ThenAbnerlookedbehind him, andsaid, Art thouAsahel? And heanswered, I am.
AndAbnersaid to him, Turn theeaside to thy righthand or to thyleft, and lay theehold onone of the youngmen, andtake thee hisarmour. ButAsahelwould not turnaside fromfollowing of him.
AndAbnersaidagain toAsahel, Turn theeaside fromfollowing me: wherefore should Ismite thee to theground? how then should I holdup myface toJoab thybrother?
Howbeit herefused to turnaside: whereforeAbner with the hinderend of thespearsmote himunder thefifth rib, that thespear cameoutbehind him; and he felldown there, anddied in the sameplace: and it came to pass, that as many ascame to theplace whereAsahel felldown anddied stoodstill.
Joab also andAbishaipursuedafterAbner: and thesun wentdown when they werecome to thehill ofAmmah, that liethbeforeGiah by theway of thewilderness ofGibeon.
And thechildren ofBenjamin gathered themselvestogetherafterAbner, and becameonetroop, andstood on thetop of anhill.
ThenAbnercalled toJoab, andsaid, Shall thesworddevour forever?knowest thou not that it will bebitterness in the latterend? how long shall it be then, ere thoubid thepeoplereturn fromfollowing theirbrethren?
AndJoabsaid, AsGodliveth, unless thou hadstspoken, surely then in themorning thepeople had goneup everyone fromfollowing hisbrother.
SoJoabblew atrumpet, and all thepeople stoodstill, andpursuedafterIsrael no more, neitherfought they anymore.
AndAbner and hismenwalked all thatnight through theplain, and passedoverJordan, and wentthrough allBithron, and theycame toMahanaim.
AndJoabreturned fromfollowingAbner: and when he hadgathered all thepeopletogether, therelacked ofDavid'sservantsnineteenmen andAsahel.
But theservants ofDavid hadsmitten ofBenjamin, and ofAbner'smen, so thatthreehundred andthreescoremendied.
And they tookupAsahel, andburied him in thesepulchre of hisfather, which was inBethlehem. AndJoab and hismenwent allnight, and they came toHebron at break ofday.
