Chapter 24
KJV · Textus Receptus
Andagain theanger of theLORD waskindled againstIsrael, and hemovedDavid against them tosay,Go,numberIsrael andJudah.
For thekingsaid toJoab thecaptain of thehost, which was with him, Go nowthrough all thetribes ofIsrael, fromDan even toBeersheba, andnumber ye thepeople, that I mayknow thenumber of thepeople.
AndJoabsaid unto theking, Now theLORD thyGodadd unto thepeople, how manysoever they be, anhundredfold, and that theeyes of mylord theking maysee it: but why doth mylord thekingdelight in thisthing?
Notwithstanding theking'swordprevailed againstJoab, and against thecaptains of thehost. AndJoab and thecaptains of thehost wentout from thepresence of theking, tonumber thepeople ofIsrael.
And they passedoverJordan, andpitched inAroer, on the rightside of thecity that lieth in themidst of theriver ofGad, and towardJazer:
Then theycame toGilead, and to theland ofTahtimhodshi; and theycame toDanjaan, andabout toZidon,
Andcame to the stronghold ofTyre, and to all thecities of theHivites, and of theCanaanites: and they wentout to thesouth ofJudah, even toBeersheba.
So when they hadgone through all theland, theycame toJerusalem at theend ofninemonths andtwentydays.
AndJoab gaveup thesum of thenumber of thepeople unto theking: and there were inIsraeleighthundredthousandvaliantmen thatdrew thesword; and themen ofJudah werefivehundredthousandmen.
AndDavid'sheartsmote himafter that he hadnumbered thepeople. AndDavidsaid unto theLORD, I havesinnedgreatly in that I havedone: and now, I beseech thee, OLORD, takeaway theiniquity of thyservant; for I have doneveryfoolishly.
For whenDavid wasup in themorning, theword of theLORD came unto theprophetGad,David'sseer, saying,
Go andsay untoDavid, Thussaith theLORD, Ioffer theethree things;choose theeone of them, that I may do it untothee.
SoGadcame toDavid, andtold him, andsaid unto him, Shallsevenyears offaminecome unto thee in thyland? or wilt thoufleethreemonthsbefore thineenemies, while theypursue thee? or that there bethreedays'pestilence in thyland? nowadvise, andsee whatanswer I shallreturn to him thatsent me.
AndDavidsaid untoGad, I am in agreatstrait: let usfall now into thehand of theLORD; for hismercies aregreat: and let me notfall into thehand ofman.
So theLORDsent apestilence uponIsrael from themorning even to thetimeappointed: and theredied of thepeople fromDan even toBeershebaseventythousandmen.
And when theangel stretchedout hishand uponJerusalem todestroy it, theLORDrepented him of theevil, andsaid to theangel thatdestroyed thepeople, It isenough:stay now thinehand. And theangel of theLORD was by thethreshingplace ofAraunah theJebusite.
AndDavidspake unto theLORD when hesaw theangel thatsmote thepeople, andsaid, Lo, I havesinned, and I have donewickedly: but thesesheep, what have theydone? let thinehand, I pray thee, be against me, and against myfather'shouse.
AndDavid, according to thesaying ofGad, wentup as theLORDcommanded.
AndAraunahlooked, andsaw theking and hisservants comingon toward him: andAraunah wentout, andbowed himself before theking on hisface upon theground.
AndAraunahsaid, Wherefore is mylord thekingcome to hisservant? AndDavidsaid, Tobuy thethreshingfloor of thee, tobuild analtar unto theLORD, that theplague may bestayed from thepeople.
AndAraunahsaid untoDavid, Let mylord thekingtake and offerup what seemethgood untohim:behold, here beoxen for burntsacrifice, and threshinginstruments and otherinstruments of theoxen forwood.
All these things didAraunah, as aking, give unto theking. AndAraunahsaid unto theking, TheLORD thyGodaccept thee.
And thekingsaid untoAraunah, Nay; but I willsurelybuy it of thee at aprice: neither will Ioffer burntofferings unto theLORD myGod of that which doth cost menothing. SoDavidbought thethreshingfloor and theoxen forfiftyshekels ofsilver.
AndDavidbuilt there analtar unto theLORD, andoffered burntofferings and peaceofferings. So theLORD wasintreated for theland, and theplague wasstayed fromIsrael.
