In thethirdyear of thereign ofJehoiakimking ofJudahcameNebuchadnezzarking ofBabylon untoJerusalem, and besieged it.
2 And theLordgaveJehoiakimking ofJudah into hishand, withpart of thevessels of thehouse ofGod: which hecarried into theland ofShinar to thehouse of hisgod; and hebrought thevessels into thetreasurehouse of his god.
3 And thekingspake untoAshpenaz themaster of hiseunuchs, that he shouldbring certain of thechildren ofIsrael, and of theking'sseed, and of the princes;
4Children in whom was noblemish, butwellfavoured, andskilful in allwisdom, andcunning inknowledge, andunderstandingscience, and such as hadability in them tostand in theking'spalace, and whom they mightteach thelearning and thetongue of the Chaldeans.
5 And thekingappointed them adailyprovision of theking'smeat, and of thewine which hedrank: sonourishing themthreeyears, that at theend thereof they mightstandbefore the king.
6 Now among these were of thechildren ofJudah,Daniel,Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah:
7 Unto whom theprince of theeunuchsgavenames: for hegave untoDaniel the name ofBelteshazzar; and toHananiah, ofShadrach; and toMishael, ofMeshach; and toAzariah, of Abednego.
8 ButDanielpurposed in hisheart that he would notdefile himself with theportion of theking'smeat, nor with thewine which hedrank: therefore herequested of theprince of theeunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 NowGod hadbroughtDaniel intofavour and tenderlovewith theprince of the eunuchs.
10 And theprince of theeunuchssaid untoDaniel, Ifear mylord theking, who hathappointed yourmeat and yourdrink: for why should hesee yourfaces worseliking than thechildren which are of yoursort? then shall ye make meendanger myhead to the king.
11 ThensaidDaniel toMelzar, whom theprince of theeunuchs hadset overDaniel,Hananiah,Mishael, and Azariah,
12Prove thyservants, I beseech thee,tendays; and let themgive uspulse toeat, andwater to drink.
13 Then let ourcountenances be lookeduponbefore thee, and thecountenance of thechildren thateat of theportion of theking'smeat: and as thouseest,deal with thy servants.
14 So heconsented to them in thismatter, andproved themten days.
15 And at theend oftendays theircountenancesappearedfairer andfatter inflesh than all thechildren which dideat theportion of theking's meat.
16 ThusMelzar tookaway the portion of theirmeat, and thewine that they shoulddrink; andgave them pulse.
17 As for thesefourchildren,Godgave themknowledge andskill in alllearning andwisdom: andDaniel hadunderstanding in allvisions and dreams.
18 Now at theend of thedays that theking hadsaid he shouldbring them in, then theprince of theeunuchsbrought them inbefore Nebuchadnezzar.
19 And thekingcommuned with them; and among them all wasfound none likeDaniel,Hananiah,Mishael, andAzariah: thereforestood theybefore the king.
20 And in allmatters ofwisdom andunderstanding, that thekingenquired of them, hefound them tentimesbetter than all themagicians andastrologers that were in all his realm.
21 AndDaniel continued even unto thefirstyear ofking Cyrus.
