Deuteronomy
Chapter 1
KJV · Textus Receptus
These be thewords whichMosesspake unto allIsrael on thissideJordan in thewilderness, in theplain overagainst theRed sea, betweenParan, andTophel, andLaban, andHazeroth, and Dizahab.
(There areelevendays' journey fromHoreb by theway ofmountSeir unto Kadeshbarnea.)
And it came to pass in thefortiethyear, in theeleventhmonth, on thefirst day of themonth, thatMosesspake unto thechildren ofIsrael, according unto all that theLORD had given him in commandment unto them;
After he hadslainSihon theking of theAmorites, whichdwelt inHeshbon, andOg theking ofBashan, whichdwelt atAstaroth in Edrei:
On thissideJordan, in theland ofMoab, beganMoses todeclare thislaw, saying,
TheLORD ourGodspake unto us inHoreb, saying, Ye havedwelt longenough in this mount:
Turn you, and take yourjourney, andgo to themount of theAmorites, and unto all the placesnigh thereunto, in theplain, in thehills, and in thevale, and in thesouth, and by theseaside, to theland of theCanaanites, and untoLebanon, unto thegreatriver, theriver Euphrates.
Behold, I haveset thelandbefore you:go in andpossess theland which theLORDsware unto yourfathers,Abraham,Isaac, andJacob, togive unto them and to theirseed after them.
And Ispake unto you at thattime, saying, I am notable tobear you myself alone:
TheLORD yourGod hathmultiplied you, and, behold, ye are thisday as thestars ofheaven for multitude.
(TheLORDGod of yourfathers make you athousandtimes so many moreas ye are, andbless you, as he hath promised you!)
How can I myself alonebear yourcumbrance, and yourburden, and your strife?
Take youwisemen, andunderstanding, andknown among yourtribes, and I willmake them rulers over you.
And yeanswered me, andsaid, Thething which thou hastspoken isgood for us to do.
So Itook thechief of yourtribes, wisemen, andknown, andmade themheads over you, captains overthousands, andcaptains overhundreds, andcaptains overfifties, andcaptains overtens, andofficers among your tribes.
And Icharged yourjudges at thattime, saying,Hear the causes between yourbrethren, andjudgerighteously between everyman and hisbrother, and the stranger that is with him.
Ye shall notrespectpersons injudgment; but ye shallhear thesmall as well as thegreat; ye shall not beafraid of theface ofman; for thejudgment isGod's: and thecause that is toohard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
And Icommanded you at thattime all thethings which ye should do.
And when wedeparted fromHoreb, we wentthrough all thatgreat andterriblewilderness, which yesaw by theway of themountain of theAmorites, as theLORD ourGodcommanded us; and wecame to Kadeshbarnea.
And Isaid unto you, Ye arecome unto themountain of theAmorites, which theLORD ourGod doth give unto us.
Behold, theLORD thyGod hathset thelandbefore thee: goup andpossess it, as theLORDGod of thyfathers hathsaid unto thee;fear not, neither be discouraged.
And ye camenear unto me every one of you, andsaid, We willsendmenbefore us, and they shall search usout theland, andbring uswordagain by whatway we must goup, and into whatcities we shall come.
And thesaying pleased mewell: and Itooktwelvemen of you,one of atribe:
And theyturned and wentup into themountain, andcame unto thevalley ofEshcol, and searched it out.
And theytook of thefruit of theland in theirhands, and brought itdown unto us, andbrought uswordagain, andsaid, It is agoodland which theLORD ourGod doth give us.
Notwithstanding yewould not goup, butrebelled against thecommandment of theLORD your God:
And yemurmured in yourtents, andsaid, Because theLORDhated us, he hath brought usforth out of theland ofEgypt, todeliver us into thehand of theAmorites, to destroy us.
Whither shall we goup? ourbrethren havediscouraged ourheart, saying, Thepeople isgreater andtaller than we; thecities aregreat and walledup toheaven; and moreover we haveseen thesons of the Anakims there.
Then Isaid unto you,Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
TheLORD yourGod whichgoethbefore you, he shallfight for you, according to all that hedid for you inEgypt before your eyes;
And in thewilderness, where thou hastseen how that theLORD thyGodbare thee, as aman dothbear hisson, in all theway that yewent, until yecame into this place.
Yet in thisthing ye did notbelieve theLORD your God,
Whowent in thewaybefore you, to search youout aplace to pitch yourtents in, infire bynight, toshew you by whatway ye shouldgo, and in acloud by day.
And theLORDheard thevoice of yourwords, and waswroth, andsware, saying,
Surely there shall notone of thesemen of thisevilgenerationsee thatgoodland, which Isware togive unto your fathers,
SaveCaleb theson ofJephunneh; he shallsee it, and to him will Igive thelandthat he hath troddenupon, and to hischildren, because he hathwhollyfollowed the LORD.
Also theLORD wasangry with me for yoursakes, saying, Thou also shalt notgo in thither.
ButJoshua theson ofNun, whichstandeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill.
And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.
And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
