Ecclesiastes
Chapter 1
KJV · Textus Receptus
Thewords of thePreacher, theson ofDavid, king in Jerusalem.
Vanity ofvanities, saith thePreacher, vanity ofvanities; all is vanity.
Whatprofit hath aman of all hislabour which hetaketh under the sun?
Onegeneration passethaway, and anothergenerationcometh: but theearthabideth for ever.
Thesun alsoariseth, and thesun goethdown, andhasteth to hisplace where he arose.
Thewindgoeth toward thesouth, and turnethabout unto thenorth; it whirleth aboutcontinually, and thewind returnethagain according to his circuits.
All theriversrun into thesea; yet thesea is notfull; unto theplace from whence theriverscome, thither theyreturn again.
Allthings are full oflabour;mancannotutter it: theeye is notsatisfied withseeing, nor theearfilled with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which isdone is that which shall bedone: and there is nonew thing under the sun.
Isthere anything whereof it may besaid,See, this isnew? it hath beenalready of oldtime, which was before us.
There is noremembrance offormer things; neither shall there be anyremembrance of things that are tocome with those that shall come after.
I thePreacher wasking overIsrael in Jerusalem.
And Igave myheart toseek and searchout bywisdom concerning all things that aredone underheaven: thissoretravail hathGodgiven to thesons ofman to be exercised therewith.
I haveseen all theworks that aredone under thesun; and, behold, all isvanity andvexation of spirit.
That which iscrookedcannot be madestraight: and that which iswantingcannot be numbered.
Icommuned with mine ownheart, saying, Lo, I am come to greatestate, and havegotten morewisdom than all they that have beenbefore me inJerusalem: yea, myheart hadgreatexperience ofwisdom and knowledge.
And Igave myheart toknowwisdom, and toknowmadness andfolly: Iperceived thatthis also isvexation of spirit.
For inmuchwisdom ismuchgrief: and he thatincreasethknowledgeincreaseth sorrow.
