Ecclesiastes
Chapter 9
KJV · Textus Receptus
For all this Iconsidered in myheart even todeclare all this, that therighteous, and thewise, and theirworks, are in thehand ofGod: nomanknowetheitherlove orhatred by all that is before them.
All things come alike to all: there isoneevent to therighteous, and to thewicked; to thegood and to theclean, and to theunclean; to him thatsacrificeth, and to himthatsacrificeth not: as is thegood, so is thesinner; and he thatsweareth, as he thatfeareth an oath.
This is anevil among all things that aredone under thesun, that there isoneevent unto all: yea, also theheart of thesons ofmen isfull ofevil, andmadness is in theirheart while theylive, andafter that they go to the dead.
For to him thatisjoined to all theliving there ishope: for alivingdog isbetter than adead lion.
For thelivingknow that they shalldie: but thedeadknow not anything, neither have they any more areward; for thememory of them is forgotten.
Also theirlove, and theirhatred, and theirenvy, isnowperished; neither have they any more aportion forever in any thing that isdone under the sun.
Go thyway, eat thybread withjoy, anddrink thywine with amerryheart; forGodnowaccepteth thy works.
Let thygarments bealwayswhite; and let thyheadlack no ointment.
Livejoyfully with thewife whom thoulovest all thedays of thelife of thyvanity, which he hathgiven thee under thesun, all thedays of thyvanity: for that is thyportion in thislife, and in thylabour which thoutakest under the sun.
Whatsoever thyhandfindeth todo,do it with thymight; for there is nowork, nordevice, norknowledge, norwisdom, in thegrave, whither thou goest.
Ireturned, andsaw under thesun, that therace is not to theswift, nor thebattle to thestrong, neither yetbread to thewise, nor yetriches to men ofunderstanding, nor yetfavour to men ofskill; buttime andchance happeneth to them all.
Forman alsoknoweth not histime: as thefishes that aretaken in anevilnet, and as thebirds that arecaught in thesnare;so are thesons ofmensnared in aneviltime, when itfalleth suddenly upon them.
Thiswisdom have Iseen also under thesun, and it seemed great unto me:
There was alittlecity, andfewmen within it; and therecame agreatking against it, andbesieged it, andbuiltgreat bulwarks against it:
Now there wasfound in it apoorwiseman, and he by hiswisdomdelivered thecity; yet nomanremembered that samepoor man.
Thensaid I,Wisdom isbetter thanstrength: nevertheless the poorman'swisdom isdespised, and hiswords are not heard.
Thewords ofwise men areheard inquiet more than thecry of him thatruleth among fools.
