Esther
Chapter 4
KJV · Textus Receptus
WhenMordecaiperceived all that wasdone,Mordecairent hisclothes, and putonsackcloth withashes, and wentout into themidst of thecity, andcried with aloud and abitter cry;
Andcame evenbefore theking'sgate: for none mightenter into theking'sgateclothed with sackcloth.
And in everyprovince,whithersoever theking'scommandment and hisdecreecame, there wasgreatmourning among theJews, andfasting, andweeping, andwailing; andmanylay insackcloth and ashes.
SoEsther'smaids and herchamberlainscame andtold it her. Then was thequeenexceedinglygrieved; and shesentraiment toclotheMordecai, and to takeaway hissackcloth from him: but he received it not.
ThencalledEsther forHatach, one of theking'schamberlains, whom he hadappointed toattend upon her, and gave him acommandment toMordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
SoHatach wentforth toMordecai unto thestreet of thecity, which wasbefore theking's gate.
AndMordecaitold him of all that hadhappened unto him, and of thesum of themoney thatHaman hadpromised topay to theking'streasuries for theJews, to destroy them.
Also hegave him thecopy of thewriting of thedecree that wasgiven atShushan todestroy them, toshew it untoEsther, and todeclare it unto her, and tocharge her that she should goin unto theking, to makesupplication unto him, and to makerequestbefore him for her people.
AndHatachcame andtoldEsther thewords of Mordecai.
AgainEstherspake untoHatach, and gave himcommandment unto Mordecai;
All theking'sservants, and thepeople of theking'sprovinces, doknow, that whosoever, whetherman orwoman, shallcome unto theking into theinnercourt, who is notcalled, there isonelaw of his to put him todeath,except such to whom theking shall holdout thegoldensceptre, that he maylive: but I have not beencalled to comein unto theking thesethirty days.
And theytold toMordecaiEsther's words.
ThenMordecaicommanded toanswerEsther,Think not withthyself that thou shaltescape in theking'shouse, more than all the Jews.
For if thoualtogether holdest thypeace at thistime, then shall thereenlargement anddeliverancearise to theJews fromanotherplace; but thou and thyfather'shouse shall bedestroyed: and whoknoweth whether thou artcome to thekingdom for such a time as this?
ThenEstherbade themreturn Mordecai this answer,
Go, gathertogether all theJews that arepresent inShushan, andfast ye for me, and neithereat nordrinkthreedays,night orday: I also and mymaidens willfast likewise; andso will Igo in unto theking, which is not according to thelaw: and if Iperish, I perish.
SoMordecai went hisway, anddid according to all thatEsther had commanded him.
