Exodus
Chapter 18
KJV · Textus Receptus
WhenJethro, thepriest ofMidian,Moses' father inlaw,heard of all thatGod haddone forMoses, and forIsrael hispeople, and that theLORD hadbroughtIsrael out of Egypt;
ThenJethro,Moses' father inlaw, tookZipporah,Moses'wife, after he had sent her back,
And hertwosons; of which thename of theone wasGershom; for hesaid, I have been analien in astrange land:
And thename of theother wasEliezer; for theGod of myfather, said he, was minehelp, anddelivered me from thesword of Pharaoh:
AndJethro,Moses' father inlaw, came with hissons and hiswife untoMoses into thewilderness, where heencamped at themount of God:
And hesaid untoMoses, I thy father inlawJethro amcome unto thee, and thywife, and hertwo sons with her.
AndMoses wentout tomeet his father inlaw, and didobeisance, andkissed him; and theyaskedeachother of theirwelfare; and theycame into the tent.
AndMosestold his father inlaw all that theLORD haddone untoPharaoh and to theEgyptians forIsrael'ssake, and all thetravail that hadcome upon them by theway, and how theLORD delivered them.
AndJethrorejoiced for all thegoodness which theLORD haddone toIsrael, whom he haddelivered out of thehand of the Egyptians.
AndJethrosaid,Blessed be theLORD, who hathdelivered you out of thehand of theEgyptians, and out of thehand ofPharaoh, who hathdelivered thepeople from under thehand of the Egyptians.
Now Iknow that theLORD isgreater than allgods: for in thething wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
AndJethro,Moses' father inlaw, took a burntoffering andsacrifices forGod: andAaroncame, and all theelders ofIsrael, toeatbread withMoses' father inlawbefore God.
And it came to pass on themorrow, thatMosessat tojudge thepeople: and thepeoplestood byMoses from themorning unto the evening.
And whenMoses' father inlawsaw all that hedid to thepeople, hesaid, What is thisthing that thoudoest to thepeople? whysittest thou thyself alone, and all thepeoplestand by thee frommorning unto even?
AndMosessaid unto his father inlaw, Because thepeoplecome unto me toenquire of God:
When they have amatter, theycome unto me; and Ijudge betweenone andanother, and I do make themknow thestatutes ofGod, and his laws.
AndMoses' father inlawsaid unto him, Thething that thoudoest is not good.
Thou wiltsurely wearaway, both thou, and thispeople that is with thee: for thisthing is tooheavy for thee; thou art notable to perform it thyself alone.
Hearken now unto myvoice, I will give theecounsel, andGod shallbe with thee: Be thou for thepeople toGod-ward, that thou mayestbring thecauses unto God:
And thou shaltteach themordinances andlaws, and shaltshew them theway wherein they mustwalk, and thework that they must do.
Moreover thou shaltprovide out of all thepeopleablemen, such asfearGod,men oftruth, hatingcovetousness; andplace such over them, to berulers ofthousands, andrulers ofhundreds, rulers offifties, andrulers of tens:
And let themjudge thepeople at allseasons: and it shall be, that everygreatmatter they shallbring unto thee, but everysmallmatter they shalljudge: so shall it beeasier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
If thou shaltdo thisthing, andGodcommand thee so, then thou shalt beable toendure, and all thispeople shall alsogo to theirplace in peace.
SoMoseshearkened to thevoice of his father inlaw, anddid all that he had said.
AndMoseschoseablemen out of allIsrael, andmade themheads over thepeople, rulers ofthousands, rulers ofhundreds, rulers offifties, andrulers of tens.
And theyjudged thepeople at allseasons: thehardcauses theybrought untoMoses, but everysmallmatter they judged themselves.
AndMoses let his father inlawdepart; and hewent his way into his own land.
