KJV · Textus Receptus
AndJacobdwelt in theland wherein hisfather was astranger, in theland of Canaan.
These are thegenerations ofJacob.Joseph, beingseventeenyearsold, wasfeeding theflock with hisbrethren; and thelad was with thesons ofBilhah, and with thesons ofZilpah, hisfather'swives: andJosephbrought unto hisfather theirevil report.
NowIsraellovedJoseph more than all hischildren, because he was theson of his oldage: and hemade him acoat of many colours.
And when hisbrethrensaw that theirfatherloved him more than all hisbrethren, theyhated him, andcould notspeak peaceably unto him.
AndJosephdreamed adream, and hetold it hisbrethren: and theyhated him yet the more.
And hesaid unto them,Hear, I pray you, thisdream which I have dreamed:
For, behold, we werebindingsheaves in thefield, and, lo, mysheafarose, and also stoodupright; and, behold, yoursheaves stood roundabout, and madeobeisance to my sheaf.
And hisbrethrensaid to him, Shalt thouindeedreign over us? or shalt thouindeed havedominion over us? And theyhated him yet themore for hisdreams, and for his words.
And hedreamed yetanotherdream, andtold it hisbrethren, andsaid, Behold, I havedreamed adream more; and, behold, thesun and themoon and theelevenstars made obeisance to me.
And hetold it to hisfather, and to hisbrethren: and hisfatherrebuked him, andsaid unto him, What is thisdream that thou hastdreamed? Shall I and thymother and thybrethrenindeedcome to bowdown ourselves to thee to the earth?
And hisbrethrenenvied him; but hisfatherobserved the saying.
And hisbrethrenwent tofeed theirfather'sflock in Shechem.
AndIsraelsaid untoJoseph, Do not thybrethrenfeed the flock inShechem?come, and I will sendthee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
And hesaid to him,Go, I pray thee,see whether it bewell with thybrethren, andwell with theflocks; andbring mewordagain. So hesent him out of thevale ofHebron, and hecame to Shechem.
And a certainman foundhim, and, behold, he waswandering in thefield: and theman askedhim,saying, What seekest thou?
And hesaid, Iseek mybrethren:tell me, I pray thee,where they feed their flocks.
And themansaid, They aredepartedhence; for Iheard themsay, Let usgo toDothan. AndJosephwentafter hisbrethren, andfound them in Dothan.
And when theysaw him afaroff, even before he camenear unto them, theyconspired against him to slay him.
And theysaidone toanother, Behold,thisdreamer cometh.
Come now therefore, and let usslay him, andcast him intosomepit, and we willsay, Someevilbeast hathdevoured him: and we shallsee what will become of his dreams.
AndReubenheard it, and hedelivered him out of theirhands; andsaid, Let us notkill him.
AndReubensaid unto them,Shed noblood, butcast him into thispit that is in thewilderness, andlay nohand upon him; that he mightrid him out of theirhands, todeliver him to hisfather again.
And it came to pass, whenJoseph wascome unto hisbrethren, that theystriptJoseph outof hiscoat, hiscoat of many colours that was on him;
And theytook him, andcast him into apit: and thepit wasempty, there was no water in it.
And they satdown toeatbread: and they liftedup theireyes andlooked, and, behold, acompany ofIshmeelitescame fromGilead with theircamelsbearingspicery andbalm andmyrrh,going to carry itdown to Egypt.
AndJudahsaid unto hisbrethren, Whatprofit is it if weslay ourbrother, andconceal his blood?
Come, and let ussell him to theIshmeelites, and let not ourhand be upon him; for he is ourbrother and ourflesh. And hisbrethren were content.
Then therepassed byMidianitesmerchantmen; and theydrew and liftedupJoseph out of thepit, andsoldJoseph to theIshmeelites fortwenty pieces ofsilver: and theybroughtJoseph into Egypt.
AndReubenreturned unto thepit; and, behold,Joseph was not in thepit; and herent his clothes.
And hereturned unto hisbrethren, andsaid, Thechild is not; and I,whither shall I go?
And theytookJoseph'scoat, andkilled akid of thegoats, anddipped thecoat in the blood;
And theysent thecoat of manycolours, and theybrought it to theirfather; andsaid, This have wefound:know now whether it be thyson's coat or no.
And he knewit, andsaid, It is myson'scoat; anevilbeast hathdevoured him;Joseph is withoutdoubt rent in pieces.
AndJacobrent hisclothes, andputsackcloth upon hisloins, andmourned for hissonmany days.
And all hissons and all hisdaughters roseup tocomfort him; but herefused to becomforted; and hesaid, For I will godown into thegrave unto mysonmourning. Thus hisfather wept for him.
And theMidianitessold him intoEgypt untoPotiphar, anofficer ofPharaoh's, andcaptain of the guard.
