Isaiah
Chapter 37
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass, whenkingHezekiahheard it, that herent hisclothes, andcovered himself withsackcloth, andwent into thehouse of the LORD.
And hesentEliakim, who was over thehousehold, andShebna thescribe, and theelders of thepriestscovered withsackcloth, untoIsaiah theprophet theson of Amoz.
And theysaid unto him, ThussaithHezekiah, Thisday is aday oftrouble, and ofrebuke, and ofblasphemy: for thechildren arecome to thebirth, and there is notstrength to bring forth.
It may be theLORD thyGod willhear thewords ofRabshakeh, whom theking ofAssyria hismaster hathsent toreproach thelivingGod, and willreprove thewords which theLORD thyGod hathheard: wherefore liftup thyprayer for theremnant that is left.
So theservants ofkingHezekiahcame to Isaiah.
AndIsaiahsaid unto them, Thus shall yesay unto yourmaster, Thussaith theLORD, Be notafraidof thewords that thou hastheard, wherewith theservants of theking ofAssyria have blasphemed me.
Behold, I willsend ablast upon him, and he shallhear arumour, andreturn to his ownland; and I will cause him tofall by thesword in his own land.
SoRabshakehreturned, andfound theking ofAssyriawarring againstLibnah: for he hadheard that he wasdeparted from Lachish.
And heheardsay concerningTirhakahking ofEthiopia, He is comeforth to makewar with thee. And when heheard it, hesentmessengers toHezekiah, saying,
Thus shall yespeak toHezekiahking ofJudah, saying, Let not thyGod, in whom thoutrustest, deceive thee, saying,Jerusalem shall not begiven into thehand of theking of Assyria.
Behold, thou hastheard what thekings ofAssyria havedone to alllands by destroying themutterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
Have thegods of thenationsdelivered them which myfathers havedestroyed, asGozan, andHaran, andRezeph, and thechildren ofEden which were in Telassar?
Where is theking ofHamath, and theking ofArphad, and theking of thecity ofSepharvaim,Hena, and Ivah?
AndHezekiahreceived theletter from thehand of themessengers, andread it: andHezekiah wentup unto thehouse of theLORD, andspread itbefore the LORD.
AndHezekiahprayed unto theLORD, saying,
OLORD ofhosts,God ofIsrael, thatdwellest between thecherubims, thou art theGod, even thou alone, of all thekingdoms of theearth: thou hastmadeheaven and earth.
Incline thineear, OLORD, andhear;open thineeyes, OLORD, andsee: andhear all thewords ofSennacherib, which hathsent toreproach theliving God.
Of atruth,LORD, thekings ofAssyria have laidwaste all thenations, and their countries,
And havecast theirgods into thefire: for they were nogods, but thework ofmen'shands, wood andstone: therefore they have destroyed them.
Now therefore, OLORD ourGod,save us from hishand, that all thekingdoms of theearth mayknow that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
ThenIsaiah theson ofAmozsent untoHezekiah, saying, Thussaith theLORDGod ofIsrael, Whereas thou hastprayed to me againstSennacheribking of Assyria:
This is theword which theLORD hathspoken concerning him; Thevirgin, thedaughter ofZion, hathdespised thee, and laughed thee toscorn; thedaughter ofJerusalem hathshaken herhead at thee.
Whom hast thoureproached andblasphemed? and against whom hast thouexalted thyvoice, and liftedup thineeyes onhigh? even against the HolyOne of Israel.
By thyservants hast thoureproached theLord, and hastsaid, By themultitude of mychariots am I comeup to theheight of themountains, to thesides ofLebanon; and I will cutdown thetallcedars thereof, and thechoice firtrees thereof: and I willenter into theheight of hisborder, and theforest of his Carmel.
I havedigged, anddrunkwater; and with thesole of myfeet have I driedup all therivers of the besieged places.
Hast thou notheard longago, how I havedone it; and ofancienttimes, that I haveformed it? now have Ibrought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to laywastedefencedcities intoruinous heaps.
Therefore theirinhabitants were ofsmallpower, they weredismayed andconfounded: they were as thegrass of thefield, and as thegreenherb, as thegrass on thehousetops, and as cornblastedbefore it be grown up.
But Iknow thyabode, and thy goingout, and thy comingin, and thy rage against me.
Because thyrage against me, and thytumult, is comeup into mineears, therefore will Iput myhook in thynose, and mybridle in thylips, and I will turn theeback by theway by which thou camest.
And this shall be asign unto thee, Ye shalleat thisyear such asgroweth of itself; and thesecondyear that whichspringeth of the same: and in thethirdyearsow ye, andreap, andplantvineyards, andeat the fruit thereof.
And theremnant that isescaped of thehouse ofJudah shallagain takerootdownward, andbearfruit upward:
For out ofJerusalem shall goforth aremnant, and they thatescape out ofmountZion: thezeal of theLORD ofhosts shall do this.
Therefore thussaith theLORD concerning theking ofAssyria, He shall notcome into thiscity, norshoot anarrow there, nor comebefore it withshields, norcast a bank against it.
By theway that hecame, by the same shall hereturn, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
