Chapter 40
KJV · Textus Receptus
Comfort ye,comfort ye mypeople, saith your God.
Speak yecomfortably toJerusalem, andcry unto her, that herwarfare isaccomplished, that heriniquity ispardoned: for she hathreceived of theLORD'Shanddouble for all her sins.
Thevoice of him thatcrieth in thewilderness,Prepare ye theway of theLORD, makestraight in thedesert ahighway for our God.
Everyvalley shall beexalted, and everymountain andhill shall be madelow: and thecrooked shall be madestraight, and the roughplaces plain:
And theglory of theLORD shall berevealed, and allflesh shallsee ittogether: for themouth of theLORD hath spoken it.
Thevoicesaid,Cry. And hesaid, What shall Icry? Allflesh isgrass, and all thegoodliness thereof is as theflower of the field:
Thegrasswithereth, theflowerfadeth: because thespirit of theLORDbloweth upon it:surely thepeople is grass.
Thegrasswithereth, theflowerfadeth: but theword of ourGod shallstand for ever.
OZion, that bringest goodtidings, get theeup into thehighmountain; OJerusalem, that bringest goodtidings, liftup thyvoice withstrength; lift itup, be notafraid;say unto thecities ofJudah, Behold your God!
Behold, theLordGOD willcome withstrong hand, and hisarm shallrule for him: behold, hisreward is with him, and hiswork before him.
He shallfeed hisflock like ashepherd: he shallgather thelambs with hisarm, andcarry them in hisbosom, and shall gentlylead those that are with young.
Who hathmeasured thewaters in the hollow of hishand, and metedoutheaven with thespan, andcomprehended thedust of theearth in ameasure, andweighed themountains inscales, and thehills in a balance?
Who hathdirected theSpirit of theLORD, or being hiscounsellor hath taught him?
With whom took hecounsel, and whoinstructed him, andtaught him in thepath ofjudgment, andtaught himknowledge, andshewed to him theway of understanding?
Behold, thenations are as adrop of abucket, and arecounted as the smalldust of thebalance: behold, he takethup theisles as a very little thing.
AndLebanon isnotsufficient toburn, nor thebeasts thereofsufficient for a burnt offering.
Allnations before him are as nothing; and they arecounted to him less thannothing, and vanity.
To whom then will yelikenGod? or whatlikeness will ye compare unto him?
Theworkmanmelteth a gravenimage, and thegoldsmithspreadeth it over withgold, andcastethsilver chains.
He that is soimpoverished that he hath nooblationchooseth atree that will notrot; heseeketh unto him acunningworkman toprepare a gravenimage, that shall not be moved.
Have ye notknown? have ye notheard? hath it not beentold you from thebeginning? have ye notunderstood from thefoundations of the earth?
It is he thatsitteth upon thecircle of theearth, and theinhabitants thereof are asgrasshoppers; that stretchethout theheavens as acurtain, and spreadeth themout as atent to dwell in:
Thatbringeth theprinces to nothing; hemaketh thejudges of theearth as vanity.
Yea, they shall not beplanted; yea, they shall not besown: yea, theirstock shall not takeroot in theearth: and he shall alsoblow upon them, and they shallwither, and thewhirlwind shalltake them away as stubble.
To whom then will yeliken me, or shall I beequal?saith the Holy One.
Liftup youreyes onhigh, andbehold who hathcreated these things, that bringethout theirhost bynumber: hecalleth them all bynames by thegreatness of hismight, for that he isstrong inpower; notone faileth.
Whysayest thou, OJacob, andspeakest, OIsrael, Myway ishid from theLORD, and myjudgment is passedover from my God?
Hast thou notknown? hast thou notheard, that theeverlastingGod, theLORD, theCreator of theends of theearth, fainteth not, neither isweary? there is nosearching of his understanding.
Hegivethpower to thefaint; and to them that have nomight heincreaseth strength.
Even theyouths shallfaint and beweary, and the youngmen shallutterly fall:
But they thatwait upon theLORD shallrenew theirstrength; they shall mountup withwings aseagles; they shallrun, and not beweary; and they shallwalk, and not faint.
