Jeremiah
Chapter 18
KJV · Textus Receptus
Theword which came toJeremiah from theLORD, saying,
Arise, and godown to thepotter'shouse, and there I will cause thee tohear my words.
Then I wentdown to thepotter'shouse, and,behold, hewrought awork on the wheels.
And thevessel that hemade ofclay wasmarred in thehand of thepotter: so hemade itagainanothervessel, asseemedgood to thepotter to make it.
Then theword of theLORD came to me, saying,
Ohouse ofIsrael,cannot Ido with you as thispotter?saith theLORD. Behold, as theclay is in thepotter'shand, so are ye in minehand, Ohouse of Israel.
At whatinstant I shallspeak concerning anation, and concerning akingdom, to pluckup, and to pulldown, and to destroy it;
If thatnation, against whom I havepronounced,turn from theirevil, I willrepent of theevil that Ithought to do unto them.
And at whatinstant I shallspeak concerning anation, and concerning akingdom, tobuild and to plant it;
If itdoevil in mysight, that itobey not myvoice, then I willrepent of thegood, wherewith Isaid I would benefit them.
Now therefore go to,speak to themen ofJudah, and to theinhabitants ofJerusalem,saying, Thussaith theLORD; Behold, Iframeevil against you, anddevise adevice against you:return ye now everyone from hisevilway, and make yourways and yourdoings good.
And theysaid, There is nohope: but we willwalkafter our owndevices, and we will everyonedo theimagination of hisevil heart.
Therefore thussaith theLORD;Ask ye now among theheathen, who hathheard such things: thevirgin ofIsrael hathdone avery horrible thing.
Will a manleave thesnow ofLebanon which cometh from therock of thefield? or shall thecoldflowingwaters that come from anotherplace be forsaken?
Because mypeople hathforgotten me, they have burnedincense tovanity, and they have caused them tostumble in theirways from theancientpaths, towalk inpaths, in away not cast up;
Tomake theirlanddesolate, and aperpetualhissing; every one thatpasseth thereby shall beastonished, andwag his head.
I willscatter them as with aneastwindbefore theenemy; I willshew them theback, and not theface, in theday of their calamity.
Thensaid they,Come, and let usdevisedevices againstJeremiah; for thelaw shall notperish from thepriest, norcounsel from thewise, nor theword from theprophet.Come, and let ussmite him with thetongue, and let us not giveheed to any of his words.
Giveheed to me, OLORD, andhearken to thevoice of them that contend with me.
Shallevil berecompensed forgood? for they havedigged apit for mysoul.Remember that Istoodbefore thee tospeakgood for them, and to turnaway thy wrath from them.
Therefore deliverup theirchildren to thefamine, and pourout their blood by theforce of thesword; and let theirwives bebereaved of their children, and bewidows; and let theirmen beput todeath; let their youngmen beslain by thesword in battle.
Let acry beheard from theirhouses, when thou shaltbring atroopsuddenly upon them: for they havedigged apit totake me, andhidsnares for my feet.
Yet,LORD, thouknowest all theircounsel against me toslay me:forgive not theiriniquity, neither blotout theirsin from thysight, but let them beoverthrownbefore thee;deal thus with them in thetime of thine anger.
