Jeremiah
Chapter 3
KJV · Textus Receptus
Theysay, If aman putaway hiswife, and shego from him, and becomeanotherman's, shall he return unto heragain? shall not thatland begreatlypolluted? but thou hast played theharlot withmanylovers; yet returnagain to me,saith the LORD.
Liftup thineeyes unto the highplaces, andseewhere thou hast not beenlien with. In theways hast thousat for them, as theArabian in thewilderness; and thou hastpolluted theland with thywhoredoms and with thy wickedness.
Therefore theshowers have beenwithholden, and there hath been no latterrain; and thou hadst awhore'sforehead, thourefusedst to be ashamed.
Wilt thou not from this timecry unto me, Myfather, thou art theguide of my youth?
Will hereserve his anger forever? will hekeep it to theend? Behold, thou hastspoken anddone evilthings as thou couldest.
TheLORDsaid also unto me in thedays ofJosiah theking, Hast thouseen that whichbackslidingIsrael hathdone? she is goneup upon everyhighmountain andunder everygreentree, and there hath played the harlot.
And Isaidafter she haddone all these things,Turn thou unto me. But shereturned not. And hertreacheroussisterJudah saw it.
And Isaw, when for all thecauses wherebybackslidingIsrael committedadultery I had put heraway, andgiven her abill ofdivorce; yet hertreacheroussisterJudahfeared not, butwent and played the harlot also.
And it came to pass through thelightness of herwhoredom, that shedefiled theland, and committedadultery withstones and with stocks.
And yet for all this hertreacheroussisterJudah hath notturned unto me with her wholeheart, butfeignedly, saith the LORD.
And theLORDsaid unto me, ThebackslidingIsrael hathjustifiedherself more thantreacherous Judah.
Go andproclaim thesewords toward thenorth, andsay,Return, thoubackslidingIsrael, saith theLORD; and I will not cause mineanger tofall upon you: for I ammerciful, saith theLORD, and I will notkeep anger for ever.
Onlyacknowledge thineiniquity, that thou hasttransgressed against theLORD thyGod, and hastscattered thyways to thestrangers under everygreentree, and ye have notobeyed myvoice, saith the LORD.
Turn, Obackslidingchildren, saith theLORD; for I ammarried unto you: and I willtake youone of acity, andtwo of afamily, and I willbring you to Zion:
And I willgive youpastors according to mineheart, which shallfeed you withknowledge and understanding.
And it shall come to pass, when ye bemultiplied andincreased in theland, in thosedays, saith theLORD, they shallsay no more, Theark of thecovenant of theLORD: neither shall itcome tomind: neither shall theyremember it; neither shall theyvisit it; neither shall that be done any more.
At thattime they shallcallJerusalem thethrone of theLORD; and all thenations shall begathered unto it, to thename of theLORD, toJerusalem: neither shall theywalk any moreafter theimagination of theirevil heart.
In thosedays thehouse ofJudah shallwalk with thehouse ofIsrael, and they shallcometogether out of theland of thenorth to theland that I have given for aninheritance unto your fathers.
But Isaid, How shall Iput thee among thechildren, andgive thee apleasantland, agoodlyheritage of thehosts ofnations? and Isaid, Thou shaltcall me, Myfather; and shalt not turnaway from me.
Surely as awifetreacherously departeth from herhusband, so have ye dealttreacherously with me, Ohouse ofIsrael, saith the LORD.
Avoice washeard upon the highplaces, weeping andsupplications of thechildren ofIsrael: for they haveperverted theirway, and they haveforgotten theLORD their God.
Return, yebackslidingchildren, and I willheal yourbackslidings. Behold, wecome unto thee; for thou art theLORD our God.
Truly invain is salvation hoped for from thehills, and from themultitude ofmountains:truly in theLORD ourGod is thesalvation of Israel.
Forshame hathdevoured thelabour of ourfathers from ouryouth; theirflocks and theirherds, theirsons and their daughters.
We liedown in ourshame, and ourconfusioncovereth us: for we havesinned against theLORD ourGod, we and ourfathers, from ouryouth even unto thisday, and have notobeyed thevoice of theLORD our God.
