Jeremiah
Chapter 4
KJV · Textus Receptus
If thou wiltreturn, OIsrael, saith theLORD,return unto me: and if thou wilt putaway thineabominations out of mysight, then shalt thou not remove.
And thou shaltswear, TheLORDliveth, intruth, injudgment, and inrighteousness; and thenations shallbless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
For thussaith theLORD to themen ofJudah andJerusalem, Breakup your fallowground, andsow not among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to theLORD, and takeaway theforeskins of yourheart, yemen ofJudah andinhabitants ofJerusalem: lest myfury comeforth likefire, andburn that none canquench it,because of theevil of your doings.
Declare ye inJudah, andpublish inJerusalem; andsay,Blow ye thetrumpet in theland:cry, gathertogether, andsay,Assemble yourselves, and let usgo into thedefenced cities.
Setup thestandard towardZion:retire, stay not: for I willbringevil from thenorth, and agreat destruction.
Thelion is comeup from histhicket, and thedestroyer of theGentiles is on hisway; he is goneforth from hisplace tomake thylanddesolate; and thycities shall be laidwaste, without an inhabitant.
For thisgird you withsackcloth, lament andhowl: for thefierceanger of theLORD is not turned back from us.
And it shall come to pass at thatday, saith theLORD, that theheart of theking shallperish, and theheart of theprinces; and thepriests shall beastonished, and theprophets shall wonder.
Thensaid I,Ah,LordGOD!surely thou hastgreatlydeceived thispeople andJerusalem, saying, Ye shall havepeace; whereas theswordreacheth unto the soul.
At thattime shall it besaid to thispeople and toJerusalem, Adrywind of the highplaces in thewildernesstoward thedaughter of mypeople, not tofan, nor to cleanse,
Even afullwind from those places shallcome unto me: now also will Igive sentence against them.
Behold, he shall comeup asclouds, and hischariots shall be as awhirlwind: hishorses areswifter thaneagles.Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
OJerusalem, wash thineheart fromwickedness, that thou mayest besaved. How long shall thyvainthoughtslodge within thee?
For avoicedeclareth fromDan, andpublishethaffliction frommount Ephraim.
Make yemention to thenations; behold, publish againstJerusalem, thatwatcherscome from afarcountry, and giveout theirvoice against thecities of Judah.
Askeepers of afield, are they against her roundabout; because she hath beenrebellious against me,saith the LORD.
Thyway and thydoings haveprocured these things unto thee; this is thywickedness, because it isbitter, because itreacheth unto thine heart.
Mybowels, mybowels! I ampained at myveryheart; myheart maketh anoise in me; I cannot hold mypeace, because thou hastheard, O mysoul, thesound of thetrumpet, thealarm of war.
Destruction upondestruction iscried; for the wholeland isspoiled:suddenly are mytentsspoiled, and mycurtains in a moment.
How long shall Isee thestandard, andhear thesound of the trumpet?
For mypeople isfoolish, they have notknown me; they aresottishchildren, and they have noneunderstanding: they arewise to doevil, but to dogood they have no knowledge.
Ibeheld theearth, and, lo, it was withoutform, andvoid; and theheavens, and they had no light.
Ibeheld themountains, and, lo, theytrembled, and all thehills moved lightly.
Ibeheld, and, lo, there was noman, and all thebirds of theheavens were fled.
Ibeheld, and, lo, the fruitfulplace was awilderness, and all thecities thereof were brokendown at thepresence of theLORD, and by hisfierce anger.
For thus hath theLORDsaid, The wholeland shall bedesolate; yet will I notmake a full end.
For this shall theearthmourn, and theheavensabove beblack: because I havespoken it, I havepurposed it, and will notrepent, neither will I turn back from it.
The wholecity shallflee for thenoise of thehorsemen andbowmen; they shallgo intothickets, and climbup upon therocks: everycity shall beforsaken, and not amandwell therein.
And when thou artspoiled, what wilt thoudo? Though thouclothest thyself withcrimson, though thoudeckest thee withornaments ofgold, though thourentest thyface withpainting, invain shalt thou make thyselffair; thylovers willdespise thee, they willseek thy life.
For I haveheard avoice as of a woman intravail, and theanguish as of her that bringeth forth her firstchild, thevoice of thedaughter ofZion, thatbewaileth herself, thatspreadeth herhands, saying,Woe is me now! for mysoul iswearied because of murderers.
