Chapter 50
KJV · Textus Receptus
Theword that theLORDspake againstBabylon and against theland of theChaldeansbyJeremiah the prophet.
Declare ye among thenations, andpublish, and setup astandard;publish, andconceal not:say,Babylon istaken,Bel isconfounded,Merodach is broken inpieces; heridols areconfounded, herimages are broken in pieces.
For out of thenorth there comethup anation against her, which shallmake herlanddesolate, and none shalldwell therein: they shallremove, they shalldepart, bothman and beast.
In thosedays, and in thattime, saith theLORD, thechildren ofIsrael shallcome, they and thechildren ofJudahtogether, going andweeping: they shallgo, andseek theLORD their God.
They shallask theway toZion with theirfacesthitherward, saying,Come, and let usjoin ourselves to theLORD in aperpetualcovenant that shall not be forgotten.
Mypeople hath beenlostsheep: theirshepherds have caused them to goastray, they have turned themaway on themountains: they havegone frommountain tohill, they haveforgotten their restingplace.
All thatfound them havedevoured them: and theiradversariessaid, Weoffend not, because they havesinned against theLORD, thehabitation ofjustice, even theLORD, thehope of their fathers.
Remove out of themidst ofBabylon, and goforth out of theland of theChaldeans, and be as the hegoatsbefore the flocks.
For, lo, I willraise and cause to comeup againstBabylon anassembly ofgreatnations from thenorthcountry: and they shall set themselves inarray against her; from thence she shall betaken: theirarrows shall be as of amighty expertman; none shallreturn in vain.
AndChaldea shall be aspoil: all thatspoil her shall besatisfied, saith the LORD.
Because ye wereglad, because yerejoiced, O yedestroyers of mineheritage, because ye are grownfat as theheifer atgrass, andbellow as bulls;
Yourmother shall besoreconfounded; she thatbare you shall beashamed: behold, thehindermost of thenations shall be awilderness, a dryland, and a desert.
Because of thewrath of theLORD it shall not beinhabited, but it shall be whollydesolate: every one thatgoeth byBabylon shall beastonished, andhiss at all her plagues.
Put yourselves inarray againstBabylon roundabout: all ye thatbend thebow, shoot at her, spare noarrows: for she hathsinned against the LORD.
Shout against her roundabout: she hathgiven herhand: herfoundations arefallen, herwalls are throwndown: for it is thevengeance of theLORD: takevengeance upon her; as she hathdone, do unto her.
Cutoff thesower fromBabylon, and him thathandleth thesickle in thetime ofharvest: forfear of theoppressingsword they shallturn everyone to hispeople, and they shallflee everyone to his own land.
Israel is ascatteredsheep; thelions have driven himaway:first theking ofAssyria hathdevoured him; andlast thisNebuchadrezzarking ofBabylon hath broken his bones.
Therefore thussaith theLORD ofhosts, theGod ofIsrael; Behold, I willpunish theking ofBabylon and hisland, as I havepunished theking of Assyria.
And I willbringIsraelagain to hishabitation, and he shallfeed onCarmel andBashan, and hissoul shall besatisfied uponmountEphraim and Gilead.
In thosedays, and in thattime, saith theLORD, theiniquity ofIsrael shall be soughtfor, and there shall be none; and thesins ofJudah, and they shall not befound: for I willpardon them whom I reserve.
Goup against theland ofMerathaim, even against it, and against theinhabitants ofPekod:waste and utterlydestroyafter them, saith theLORD, anddo according to all that I have commanded thee.
Asound ofbattle is in theland, and ofgreat destruction.
How is thehammer of the wholeearth cutasunder andbroken! how isBabylon become adesolation among the nations!
I have laid asnare for thee, and thou art alsotaken, OBabylon, and thou wast notaware: thou artfound, and alsocaught, because thou haststriven against the LORD.
TheLORD hathopened hisarmoury, and hath broughtforth theweapons of hisindignation: for this is thework of theLordGOD ofhosts in theland of the Chaldeans.
Come against her from the utmostborder, open herstorehouses: cast herup asheaps, and destroy herutterly: let nothing of her be left.
Slay all herbullocks; let them godown to theslaughter:woe unto them! for theirday iscome, thetime of their visitation.
Thevoice of them thatflee and escapeout of theland ofBabylon, todeclare inZion thevengeance of theLORD ourGod, thevengeance of his temple.
Calltogether thearchers againstBabylon: all ye thatbend thebow, camp against it roundabout; let none thereofescape:recompense her according to herwork; according to all that she hathdone,do unto her: for she hath beenproud against theLORD, against the HolyOne of Israel.
Therefore shall her youngmenfall in thestreets, and all hermen ofwar shall be cutoff in thatday, saith the LORD.
Behold, I am against thee, O thou mostproud, saith theLordGOD ofhosts: for thyday iscome, thetime that I will visit thee.
And the mostproud shallstumble andfall, and none shall raise himup: and I willkindle afire in hiscities, and it shalldevour all round about him.
Thussaith theLORD ofhosts; Thechildren ofIsrael and thechildren ofJudah wereoppressedtogether: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.
Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.
A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men.
A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.
A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed.
A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.
Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them.
At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.
