Now theword of theLORD came untoJonah theson ofAmittai, saying,
Arise,go toNineveh, thatgreatcity, andcry against it; for theirwickedness is comeup before me.
ButJonah roseup toflee untoTarshish from thepresence of theLORD, and wentdown toJoppa; and hefound ashipgoing toTarshish: so hepaid thefare thereof, and wentdown into it, togo with them untoTarshish from thepresence of the LORD.
But theLORD sentout agreatwind into thesea, and there was amightytempest in thesea, so that theship waslike to be broken.
Then themariners wereafraid, andcried everyman unto hisgod, and castforth thewares that were in theship into thesea, tolighten it of them. ButJonah was gonedown into thesides of theship; and helay, and was fast asleep.
So theshipmastercame to him, andsaid unto him, What meanest thou, Osleeper?arise, call upon thyGod, if so be thatGod willthink upon us, that we perish not.
And theysaid everyone to hisfellow,Come, and let uscastlots, that we mayknow for whosecause thisevil is upon us. So theycastlots, and thelotfell upon Jonah.
Thensaid they unto him,Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause thisevil is upon us; What is thineoccupation? andwhencecomest thou? what is thycountry? and of what people art thou?
And hesaid unto them, I am anHebrew; and Ifear theLORD, theGod ofheaven, which hathmade thesea and the dry land.
Then were themenexceedinglyafraid, andsaid unto him, Why hast thoudone this? For themenknew that hefled from thepresence of theLORD, because he had told them.
Thensaid they unto him, What shall wedo unto thee, that thesea may becalm unto us? for theseawrought, and was tempestuous.
And hesaid unto them, Take meup, and cast meforth into thesea; so shall thesea becalm unto you: for Iknow that for mysake thisgreat tempest is upon you.
Nevertheless themen rowedhard tobring it to theland; but theycould not: for theseawrought, and was tempestuous against them.
Wherefore theycried unto theLORD, andsaid, We beseechthee, OLORD, we beseech thee, let us notperish for thisman'slife, andlay not upon usinnocentblood: for thou, OLORD, hastdone as it pleased thee.
So they tookupJonah, and cast himforth into thesea: and theseaceased from her raging.
Then themenfeared theLORDexceedingly, andoffered asacrifice unto theLORD, andmade vows.
Now theLORD hadprepared agreatfish to swallowupJonah. AndJonah was in thebelly of thefishthreedays andthree nights.
