Chapter 4
KJV · Textus Receptus
But itdispleasedJonahexceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 And heprayed unto theLORD, andsaid, Ipray thee, OLORD, was not this mysaying, when I was yet in mycountry? Therefore Ifledbefore untoTarshish: for Iknew that thou art agraciousGod, andmerciful, slow toanger, and ofgreatkindness, andrepentest thee of the evil.
3 Therefore now, OLORD,take, I beseech thee, mylife from me; for it isbetter for me todie than to live.
4 Thensaid theLORD, Doest thouwell to be angry?
5 SoJonah wentout of thecity, andsat on the eastside of thecity, and theremade him abooth, andsat under it in theshadow, till he mightsee what would become of the city.
6 And theLORDGodprepared agourd, and made it to comeup overJonah, that it might be ashadow over hishead, todeliver him from hisgrief. SoJonah wasexceedingglad of the gourd.
7 ButGodprepared aworm when themorningrose the nextday, and itsmote thegourd that it withered.
8 And it came to pass, when thesun didarise, thatGodprepared avehementeastwind; and thesunbeat upon thehead ofJonah, that hefainted, andwished inhimself todie, andsaid, It isbetter for me todie than to live.
9 AndGodsaid toJonah, Doest thouwell to beangry for thegourd? And hesaid, I dowell to beangry, even unto death.
10 Thensaid theLORD, Thou hast hadpity on thegourd, for the which thou hast notlaboured, neither madest itgrow; which came up in anight, andperished in anight:
11 And should not IspareNineveh, thatgreatcity, whereinaremore thansixscorethousandpersons that cannotdiscern between their righthand and their lefthand; and alsomuch cattle?
