Now it came to pass, whenAdonizedekking ofJerusalem hadheardhowJoshua hadtakenAi, and had utterlydestroyed it; as he haddone toJericho and herking, so he haddone toAi and herking; and how theinhabitants ofGibeon had madepeace withIsrael, and were among them;
2 That theyfearedgreatly, becauseGibeon was agreatcity, asone of theroyalcities, and because it wasgreater thanAi, and all themen thereof were mighty.
3 WhereforeAdonizedekking ofJerusalemsent untoHohamking ofHebron, and untoPiramking ofJarmuth, and untoJaphiaking ofLachish, and untoDebirking ofEglon, saying,
4 Comeup unto me, andhelp me, that we maysmiteGibeon: for it hath madepeace withJoshua and with thechildren of Israel.
5 Therefore thefivekings of theAmorites, theking ofJerusalem, theking ofHebron, theking ofJarmuth, theking ofLachish, theking ofEglon, gathered themselvestogether, and wentup, they and all theirhosts, andencamped beforeGibeon, and made war against it.
6 And themen ofGibeonsent untoJoshua to thecamp toGilgal,saying,Slack not thyhand from thyservants; comeup to usquickly, andsave us, andhelp us: for all thekings of theAmorites thatdwell in themountains are gathered together against us.
7 SoJoshuaascended fromGilgal, he, and all thepeople ofwar with him, and all themighty men of valour.
8 And theLORDsaid untoJoshua,Fear them not: for I havedelivered them into thinehand; there shall not aman of themstand before thee.
9Joshua thereforecame unto themsuddenly, and wentup fromGilgal all night.
10 And theLORDdiscomfited thembeforeIsrael, andslew them with agreatslaughter atGibeon, andchased them along theway that goethup toBethhoron, andsmote them toAzekah, and unto Makkedah.
11 And it came to pass, as theyfled frombeforeIsrael, and were in the goingdown toBethhoron, that theLORD castdowngreatstones fromheaven upon them untoAzekah, and theydied: they weremore whichdied withhailstones than theywhom thechildren ofIsraelslew with the sword.
12 ThenspakeJoshua to theLORD in theday when theLORD deliveredup theAmoritesbefore thechildren ofIsrael, and hesaid in thesight ofIsrael,Sun, stand thoustill uponGibeon; and thou,Moon, in thevalley of Ajalon.
13 And thesun stoodstill, and themoonstayed, until thepeople hadavenged themselves upon theirenemies. Is notthiswritten in thebook ofJasher? So thesun stoodstill in themidst ofheaven, andhasted not to godown about awhole day.
14 And there was noday like thatbefore it orafter it, that theLORDhearkened unto thevoice of aman: for theLORDfought for Israel.
15 AndJoshuareturned, and allIsrael with him, unto thecamp to Gilgal.
16 But thesefivekingsfled, andhid themselves in acave at Makkedah.
17 And it wastoldJoshua,saying, Thefivekings arefoundhid in acave at Makkedah.
18 AndJoshuasaid,Rollgreatstones upon themouth of thecave, andsetmen by it for to keep them:
19 Andstay ye not, butpursueafter yourenemies, and smite thehindmost of them;suffer them not toenter into theircities: for theLORD yourGod hathdelivered them into your hand.
20 And it came to pass, whenJoshua and thechildren ofIsrael had made anend ofslaying them with averygreatslaughter, till they wereconsumed, that therest whichremained of thementered intofenced cities.
21 And all thepeoplereturned to thecamp toJoshua atMakkedah inpeace: nonemoved histongue againstany of thechildren of Israel.
22 ThensaidJoshua,Open themouth of thecave, and bringout thosefivekings unto me out of the cave.
23 And theydid so, and broughtforth thosefivekings unto him out of thecave, theking ofJerusalem, theking ofHebron, theking ofJarmuth, theking ofLachish, and theking of Eglon.
24 And it came to pass, when they broughtout thosekings untoJoshua, thatJoshuacalled for all themen ofIsrael, andsaid unto thecaptains of themen ofwar whichwent with him, Comenear,put yourfeet upon thenecks of thesekings. And they camenear, andput theirfeet upon the necks of them.
25 AndJoshuasaid unto them,Fear not, nor bedismayed, bestrong and of goodcourage: for thus shall theLORDdo to all yourenemies against whom ye fight.
26 AndafterwardJoshuasmote them, andslew them, andhanged them onfivetrees: and they werehanging upon thetrees until the evening.
27 And it came to pass at thetime of the goingdown of thesun, thatJoshuacommanded, and they took themdown off thetrees, andcast them into thecave wherein they had beenhid, andlaidgreatstones in thecave'smouth, which remain until thisvery day.
28 And thatdayJoshuatookMakkedah, andsmote it with theedge of thesword, and theking thereof he utterlydestroyed, them, and all thesouls that were therein; helet noneremain: and hedid to theking ofMakkedah as hedid unto theking of Jericho.
29 ThenJoshuapassed fromMakkedah, and allIsrael with him, untoLibnah, andfought against Libnah:
30 And theLORDdelivered it also, and theking thereof, into thehand ofIsrael; and hesmote it with theedge of thesword, and all thesouls that were therein; helet noneremain in it; butdid unto theking thereof as hedid unto theking of Jericho.
31 AndJoshuapassed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:
32And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.
33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.
34And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:
35And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.
36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:
37And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.
38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:
39And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.
40So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
41And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.
42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
