Joshua
Chapter 8
KJV · Textus Receptus
And theLORDsaid untoJoshua,Fear not, neither be thoudismayed:take all thepeople ofwar with thee, andarise, goup toAi:see, I havegiven into thyhand theking ofAi, and hispeople, and hiscity, and his land:
And thou shaltdo toAi and herking as thoudidst untoJericho and herking: only thespoil thereof, and thecattle thereof, shall ye take for aprey unto yourselves:lay thee anambush for thecity behind it.
SoJoshuaarose, and all thepeople ofwar, to goup againstAi: andJoshua choseoutthirtythousandmightymen ofvalour, and sent themaway by night.
And hecommanded them, saying,Behold, ye shall lie inwait against thecity, evenbehind thecity:go notveryfar from thecity, but be ye all ready:
And I, and all thepeople that are with me, willapproach unto thecity: and it shall come to pass, when they comeoutagainst us, as at thefirst, that we willflee before them,
(For they will comeoutafter us) till we havedrawn them from thecity; for they willsay, Theyfleebefore us, as at thefirst: therefore we willflee before them.
Then ye shall riseup from theambush, andseize upon thecity: for theLORD yourGod willdeliver it into your hand.
And it shall be, when ye havetaken thecity, that ye shallset thecity onfire: according to thecommandment of theLORD shall yedo.See, I have commanded you.
Joshua therefore sent themforth: and theywent to lie inambush, andabode betweenBethel andAi, on the westside ofAi: butJoshualodged thatnightamong the people.
AndJoshua rose upearly in themorning, andnumbered thepeople, and wentup, he and theelders ofIsrael, before thepeople to Ai.
And all thepeople, even the people ofwar that were with him, wentup, and drewnigh, andcame before thecity, andpitched on the northside ofAi: now there was avalley between them and Ai.
And hetook aboutfivethousandmen, andset them to lie inambush betweenBethel andAi, on the westside of thecity.
And when they hadset thepeople, even all thehost that was on thenorth of thecity, and their liers inwait on thewest of thecity,Joshuawent thatnight into themidst of the valley.
And it came to pass, when theking ofAisaw it, that theyhasted and rose upearly, and themen of thecity wentoutagainstIsrael tobattle, he and all hispeople, at a timeappointed, before theplain; but hewist not that there were liers inambush against himbehind the city.
AndJoshua and allIsrael made as if they werebeatenbefore them, andfled by theway of the wilderness.
And all thepeople that were inAi werecalled together topursueafter them: and theypursuedafterJoshua, and were drawnaway from the city.
And there was not amanleft inAi orBethel, that went notoutafterIsrael: and theyleft thecityopen, andpursued after Israel.
And theLORDsaid untoJoshua, Stretchout thespear that is in thyhand towardAi; for I willgive it into thinehand. AndJoshua stretchedout thespear that he had in hishand toward the city.
And theambusharosequickly out of theirplace, and theyran as soon as he had stretchedout hishand: and theyentered into thecity, andtook it, andhasted andset thecity on fire.
And when themen ofAilookedbehind them, theysaw, and, behold, thesmoke of thecity ascendedup toheaven, and they had nopower toflee this way or thatway: and thepeople thatfled to thewilderness turnedback upon the pursuers.
And whenJoshua and allIsraelsaw that theambush hadtaken thecity, and that thesmoke of thecityascended, then they turnedagain, andslew themen of Ai.
And theother issuedout of thecityagainst them; so they were in themidst ofIsrael, some on this side, and some on that side: and theysmote them, sothat theylet none of themremain or escape.
And theking ofAi theytookalive, andbrought him to Joshua.
And it came to pass, whenIsrael had made anend ofslaying all theinhabitants ofAi in thefield, in thewilderness wherein theychased them, and when they were allfallen on theedge of thesword, until they wereconsumed, that all theIsraelitesreturned untoAi, andsmote it with theedge of the sword.
And so it was, that all thatfell thatday, both ofmen andwomen, weretwelvethousand, even all themen of Ai.
ForJoshuadrew not hishandback, wherewith he stretchedout thespear, until he had utterlydestroyed all theinhabitants of Ai.
Only thecattle and thespoil of thatcityIsrael took for aprey unto themselves, according unto theword of theLORD which hecommanded Joshua.
AndJoshuaburntAi, andmade it anheap forever, even adesolation unto this day.
And theking ofAi hehanged on atree untileventide: and as soon as thesun wasdown,Joshuacommanded that they shouldtake hiscarcasedown from thetree, andcast it at theentering of thegate of thecity, andraise thereon agreatheap ofstones, that remaineth unto this day.
As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
