Joshua
Chapter 9
KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass, when all thekings which were on thissideJordan, in thehills, and in thevalleys, and in all thecoasts of thegreatsea overagainstLebanon, theHittite, and theAmorite, theCanaanite, thePerizzite, theHivite, and theJebusite, heard thereof;
That theygathered themselvestogether, tofight withJoshua and withIsrael, withone accord.
And when theinhabitants ofGibeonheard whatJoshua haddone untoJericho and to Ai,
They didworkwilily, andwent and made as if they had beenambassadors, andtookoldsacks upon theirasses, andwinebottles,old, andrent, and bound up;
Andoldshoes andclouted upon theirfeet, andoldgarments upon them; and all thebread of theirprovision wasdry and mouldy.
And theywent toJoshua unto thecamp atGilgal, andsaid unto him, and to themen ofIsrael, We become from afarcountry: now thereforemake ye a league with us.
And themen ofIsraelsaid unto theHivites,Peradventure yedwellamong us; and how shall wemake a league with you?
And theysaid untoJoshua, We are thyservants. AndJoshuasaid unto them, Who are ye? and fromwhence come ye?
And theysaid unto him, From averyfarcountry thyservants arecome because of thename of theLORD thyGod: for we haveheard thefame of him, and all that hedid in Egypt,
And all that hedid to thetwokings of theAmorites, that werebeyondJordan, toSihonking ofHeshbon, and toOgking ofBashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
Wherefore ourelders and all theinhabitants of ourcountryspake to us,saying,Takevictuals withyou for thejourney, andgo tomeet them, andsay unto them, We are yourservants: therefore nowmake ye a league with us.
This ourbread we tookhot for ourprovision out of ourhouses on theday we cameforth togo unto you; but now, behold, it isdry, and it is mouldy:
And thesebottles ofwine, which wefilled, werenew; and, behold, they berent: and these ourgarments and ourshoes are becomeold by reason of theverylong journey.
And thementook of theirvictuals, andasked not counsel at themouth of the LORD.
AndJoshuamadepeace with them, andmade aleague with them, to let themlive: and theprinces of thecongregation sware unto them.
And it came to pass at theend ofthreedaysafter they hadmade aleague with them, that theyheard that they were theirneighbours, and that theydwelt among them.
And thechildren ofIsraeljourneyed, andcame unto theircities on thethirdday. Now theircities wereGibeon, andChephirah, andBeeroth, and Kirjathjearim.
And thechildren ofIsraelsmote them not, because theprinces of thecongregation hadsworn unto them by theLORDGod ofIsrael. And all thecongregationmurmured against the princes.
But all theprincessaid unto all thecongregation, We havesworn unto them by theLORDGod ofIsrael: now therefore wemay not touch them.
This we willdo to them; we will even let themlive, lestwrath be upon us, because of theoath which we sware unto them.
And theprincessaid unto them, Let themlive; but let them behewers ofwood anddrawers ofwater unto all thecongregation; as theprinces had promised them.
AndJoshuacalled for them, and hespake unto them,saying, Wherefore have yebeguiled us,saying, We areveryfar from you; when yedwell among us?
Now therefore ye arecursed, and there shall none of you befreed from beingbondmen, andhewers ofwood anddrawers ofwater for thehouse of my God.
And theyansweredJoshua, andsaid, Because it wascertainlytold thyservants, how that theLORD thyGodcommanded hisservantMoses togive you all theland, and todestroy all theinhabitants of theland frombefore you, therefore we weresoreafraid of ourlivesbecause of you, and havedone this thing.
And now, behold,we are in thinehand: as itseemethgood andright unto thee todo unto us, do.
And sodid he unto them, anddelivered them out of thehand of thechildren ofIsrael, that they slew them not.
AndJoshuamade them thatdayhewers ofwood anddrawers ofwater for thecongregation, and for thealtar of theLORD, even unto thisday, in theplace which he should choose.
