Nowafter thedeath ofJoshua it came to pass, that thechildren ofIsraelasked theLORD,saying, Who shall goup for us against theCanaanitesfirst, to fight against them?
2 And theLORDsaid,Judah shall goup: behold, I havedelivered theland into his hand.
3 AndJudahsaid untoSimeon hisbrother, Comeup with me into mylot, that we mayfight against theCanaanites; and I likewise willgo with thee into thylot. SoSimeon went with him.
4 AndJudah wentup; and theLORDdelivered theCanaanites and thePerizzites into theirhand: and theyslew of them inBezektenthousand men.
5 And theyfoundAdonibezek inBezek: and theyfought against him, and theyslew theCanaanites and the Perizzites.
6 ButAdonibezekfled; and theypursuedafter him, andcaught him, and cutoff histhumbs and his great toes.
7 AndAdonibezeksaid, Threescore andtenkings, having theirthumbs and their greattoes cutoff,gathered their meat under mytable: as I havedone, soGod hathrequited me. And theybrought him toJerusalem, and there he died.
8 Now thechildren ofJudah hadfought againstJerusalem, and hadtaken it, andsmitten it with theedge of thesword, andset thecity on fire.
9 Andafterward thechildren ofJudah wentdown tofight against theCanaanites, thatdwelt in themountain, and in thesouth, and in the valley.
10 AndJudahwent against theCanaanites thatdwelt inHebron: (now thename ofHebronbefore wasKirjatharba:) and theyslewSheshai, andAhiman, and Talmai.
11 And from thence hewent against theinhabitants ofDebir: and thename ofDebirbefore was Kirjathsepher:
12 AndCalebsaid, He thatsmitethKirjathsepher, andtaketh it, to him will IgiveAchsah mydaughter to wife.
13 AndOthniel theson ofKenaz,Caleb'syoungerbrother,took it: and hegave himAchsah hisdaughter to wife.
14 And it came to pass, when shecame to him, that shemoved him toask of herfather afield: and shelighted from off herass; andCaleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15 And shesaid unto him,Give me ablessing: for thou hastgiven me asouthland;give me alsosprings ofwater. AndCalebgave her theuppersprings and thenether springs.
16 And thechildren of theKenite,Moses' father inlaw, wentup out of thecity of palmtrees with thechildren ofJudah into thewilderness ofJudah, which lieth in thesouth ofArad; and theywent anddweltamong the people.
17 AndJudahwent withSimeon hisbrother, and theyslew theCanaanites thatinhabitedZephath, and utterlydestroyed it. And thename of thecity wascalled Hormah.
18 AlsoJudahtookGaza with thecoast thereof, andAskelon with thecoast thereof, andEkron with the coast thereof.
19 And theLORD was withJudah; and he draveout the inhabitants of themountain; but couldnot driveout theinhabitants of thevalley, because they hadchariots of iron.
20 And theygaveHebron untoCaleb, asMosessaid: and heexpelled thence thethreesons of Anak.
21 And thechildren ofBenjamin did not driveout theJebusites thatinhabitedJerusalem; but theJebusitesdwell with thechildren ofBenjamin inJerusalem unto this day.
22 And thehouse ofJoseph, they also wentup againstBethel: and the LORD was with them.
23 And thehouse ofJoseph sent todescryBethel. (Now thename of thecitybefore was Luz.)
24 And thespiessaw aman comeforth out of thecity, and theysaid unto him,Shew us, we pray thee, theentrance into thecity, and we willshew thee mercy.
25 And when heshewed them theentrance into thecity, theysmote thecity with theedge of thesword; but they letgo theman and all his family.
26 And themanwent into theland of theHittites, andbuilt acity, andcalled thename thereofLuz: which is thename thereof unto this day.
27 Neither didManasseh driveout the inhabitants ofBethshean and hertowns, norTaanach and hertowns, nor theinhabitants ofDor and hertowns, nor theinhabitants ofIbleam and hertowns, nor theinhabitants ofMegiddo and hertowns: but theCanaaniteswoulddwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass, whenIsrael wasstrong, that theyput theCanaanites totribute, and did notutterly drive them out.
29 Neither didEphraim driveout theCanaanites thatdwelt inGezer; but theCanaanitesdwelt inGezer among them.
30 Neither didZebulun driveout theinhabitants ofKitron, nor theinhabitants ofNahalol; but theCanaanitesdweltamong them, and became tributaries.
31 Neither didAsher driveout theinhabitants ofAccho, nor theinhabitants ofZidon, nor ofAhlab, nor ofAchzib, nor ofHelbah, nor ofAphik, nor of Rehob:
32 But theAsheritesdweltamong theCanaanites, theinhabitants of theland: for they did not drive them out.
33 Neither didNaphtali driveout theinhabitants ofBethshemesh, nor theinhabitants ofBethanath; but hedweltamong theCanaanites, theinhabitants of theland: nevertheless theinhabitants ofBethshemesh and ofBethanath became tributaries unto them.
34 And theAmoritesforced thechildren ofDan into themountain: for they would notsuffer them to comedown to the valley:
35 But theAmoriteswoulddwell inmountHeres inAijalon, and inShaalbim: yet thehand of thehouse ofJosephprevailed, so that they became tributaries.
36 And thecoast of theAmorites was from the goingup toAkrabbim, from therock, and upward.
