Judges
Chapter 11
KJV · Textus Receptus
NowJephthah theGileadite was a mightyman ofvalour, and he was theson of anharlot: andGileadbegat Jephthah.
AndGilead'swifebare himsons; and hiswife'ssons grewup, and they thrustoutJephthah, andsaid unto him, Thou shalt notinherit in ourfather'shouse; for thou art theson of astrange woman.
ThenJephthahfledfrom hisbrethren, anddwelt in theland ofTob: and there weregatheredvainmen toJephthah, and went out with him.
And it came to pass in process oftime, that thechildren ofAmmon madewar against Israel.
And it was so, that when thechildren ofAmmon madewar againstIsrael, theelders ofGileadwent tofetchJephthah out of theland of Tob:
And theysaid untoJephthah,Come, and be ourcaptain, that we mayfight with thechildren of Ammon.
AndJephthahsaid unto theelders ofGilead, Did not yehate me, andexpel me out of myfather'shouse? and why are yecome unto me now when ye are in distress?
And theelders ofGileadsaid untoJephthah, Therefore we turnagain to thee now, that thou mayestgo with us, andfight against thechildren ofAmmon, and be ourhead over all theinhabitants of Gilead.
AndJephthahsaid unto theelders ofGilead, If ye bring me homeagain tofight against thechildren ofAmmon, and theLORDdeliver thembefore me, shall I be your head?
And theelders ofGileadsaid untoJephthah, TheLORD bewitness between us, if wedo not so according to thy words.
ThenJephthahwent with theelders ofGilead, and thepeoplemade himhead andcaptain over them: andJephthahuttered all hiswordsbefore theLORD in Mizpeh.
AndJephthahsentmessengers unto theking of thechildren ofAmmon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou artcome against me tofight in my land?
And theking of thechildren ofAmmonanswered unto themessengers ofJephthah, BecauseIsrael tookaway myland, when they cameup out ofEgypt, fromArnon even untoJabbok, and untoJordan: now therefore restore those landsagain peaceably.
AndJephthahsentmessengersagain unto theking of thechildren of Ammon:
Andsaid unto him, ThussaithJephthah,Israel took notaway theland ofMoab, nor theland of thechildren of Ammon:
But whenIsrael cameup fromEgypt, andwalked through thewilderness unto theRedsea, andcame to Kadesh;
ThenIsraelsentmessengers unto theking ofEdom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, passthrough thyland: but theking ofEdom would nothearken thereto. And in like manner theysent unto theking ofMoab: but hewould not consent: andIsraelabode in Kadesh.
Then they wentalong through thewilderness, andcompassed theland ofEdom, and theland ofMoab, andcame by the eastside of theland ofMoab, andpitched on the otherside ofArnon, butcame not within theborder ofMoab: forArnon was theborder of Moab.
AndIsraelsentmessengers untoSihonking of theAmorites, theking ofHeshbon; andIsraelsaid unto him, Let uspass, we pray thee, through thylandinto my place.
ButSihontrusted notIsrael topass through hiscoast: butSihongathered all hispeopletogether, andpitched inJahaz, andfought against Israel.
And theLORDGod ofIsraeldeliveredSihon and all hispeople into thehand ofIsrael, and theysmote them: soIsraelpossessed all theland of theAmorites, theinhabitants of that country.
And theypossessed all thecoasts of theAmorites, fromArnon even untoJabbok, and from thewilderness even unto Jordan.
So now theLORDGod ofIsrael hathdispossessed theAmorites frombefore hispeopleIsrael, and shouldest thou possess it?
Wilt not thoupossess that whichChemosh thygod giveth thee topossess? So whomsoever theLORD ourGod shall driveout frombefore us, them will we possess.
And now art thou any thingbetter thanBalak theson ofZippor, king ofMoab? did heeverstrive againstIsrael, or did heever fight against them,
WhileIsraeldwelt inHeshbon and hertowns, and inAroer and hertowns, and in all thecities that be along by thecoasts ofArnon, threehundredyears? why therefore did ye notrecover them within that time?
Wherefore I have notsinned against thee, but thoudoest mewrong towar against me: theLORD theJudge bejudge thisday between thechildren ofIsrael and thechildren of Ammon.
Howbeit theking of thechildren ofAmmonhearkened not unto thewords ofJephthah which he sent him.
Then theSpirit of theLORD came uponJephthah, and he passedoverGilead, andManasseh, and passedoverMizpeh ofGilead, and fromMizpeh ofGilead he passedover unto thechildren of Ammon.
AndJephthahvowed avow unto theLORD, andsaid, If thou shalt withoutfaildeliver thechildren ofAmmon into mine hands,
Then it shall be, thatwhatsoever comethforth of thedoors of myhouse tomeet me, when Ireturn inpeace from thechildren ofAmmon, shall surely be theLORD'S, and I will offer itup for a burnt offering.
SoJephthah passedover unto thechildren ofAmmon tofight against them; and theLORDdelivered them into his hands.
And hesmote them fromAroer, even till thoucome toMinnith, eventwentycities, and unto theplain of thevineyards, with averygreatslaughter. Thus thechildren ofAmmon weresubduedbefore thechildren of Israel.
AndJephthahcame toMizpeh unto hishouse, and, behold, hisdaughter cameout tomeet him withtimbrels and withdances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
