KJV · Textus Receptus
And it came to pass in thosedays, when there was noking inIsrael, that there was acertainLevitesojourning on theside ofmountEphraim, whotook to him aconcubine out ofBethlehemjudah.
And hisconcubine played thewhore against him, and wentaway from him unto herfather'shouse toBethlehemjudah, and was therefour wholemonths.
And herhusbandarose, andwentafter her, tospeakfriendly unto her, and to bring heragain, having hisservant with him, and acouple ofasses: and shebrought him into herfather'shouse: and when thefather of thedamselsaw him, herejoiced to meet him.
And his father inlaw, thedamsel'sfather, retained him; and heabode with himthreedays: so they dideat anddrink, and lodged there.
And it came to pass on thefourthday, when they aroseearly in themorning, that he roseup todepart: and thedamsel'sfathersaid unto his son inlaw,Comfort thineheart with amorsel ofbread, andafterward go your way.
And they satdown, and dideat anddrinkboth of themtogether: for thedamsel'sfather hadsaid unto theman, Becontent, I pray thee, and tarry allnight, and let thineheart be merry.
And when theman roseup todepart, his father inlawurged him: therefore helodged there again.
And he aroseearly in themorning on thefifthday todepart: and thedamsel'sfathersaid,Comfort thineheart, I pray thee. And theytarried untilafternoon, and they dideat both of them.
And when theman roseup todepart, he, and hisconcubine, and hisservant, his father inlaw, thedamsel'sfather, said unto him, Behold, now thedaydraweth towardevening, I pray you tarry allnight: behold, theday groweth to anend, lodge here, that thineheart may bemerry; and tomorrow get youearly on yourway, that thou mayestgo home.
But themanwould not tarry thatnight, but he roseup anddeparted, andcame overagainstJebus, which isJerusalem; and there were with himtwoassessaddled, his concubine also was with him.
And when they were byJebus, theday wasfarspent; and theservantsaid unto hismaster,Come, I pray thee, and let us turnin into thiscity of theJebusites, and lodge in it.
And hismastersaid unto him, We will not turnaside hither into thecity of astranger, that is not of thechildren ofIsrael; we will passover to Gibeah.
And hesaid unto hisservant,Come, and let us drawnear toone of theseplaces to lodge allnight, inGibeah, or in Ramah.
And they passedon and went theirway; and thesun wentdown upon them when they werebyGibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
And they turnedaside thither, to goin and tolodge inGibeah: and when he wentin, he sat himdown in astreet of thecity: for there was noman thattook them into hishouse to lodging.
And, behold, therecame anoldman from hiswork out of thefield ateven, which wasalso ofmountEphraim; and hesojourned inGibeah: but themen of theplace were Benjamites.
And when he had liftedup hiseyes, hesaw awayfaringman in thestreet of thecity: and theoldmansaid, Whithergoest thou? andwhence comest thou?
And hesaid unto him, We arepassing fromBethlehemjudah toward theside ofmountEphraim; from thence am I: and Iwent toBethlehemjudah, but I am nowgoing to thehouse of theLORD; and there is noman thatreceiveth me to house.
Yet thereis bothstraw andprovender for ourasses; and there isbread andwine also for me, and for thyhandmaid, and for the youngman which is with thyservants: there is nowant of any thing.
And theoldmansaid,Peace be with thee;howsoever let all thywants lie upon me; onlylodge not in the street.
So hebrought him into hishouse, and gaveprovender unto theasses: and theywashed theirfeet, and dideat and drink.
Now as they were making theirheartsmerry, behold, themen of thecity, certainsons ofBelial, beset thehouse roundabout, andbeat at thedoor, andspake to themaster of thehouse, theoldman, saying, Bringforth theman thatcame into thinehouse, that we may know him.
And theman, themaster of thehouse, wentout unto them, andsaid unto them,Nay, mybrethren, nay, I pray you, do not sowickedly;seeing that thisman iscome into minehouse,do not this folly.
Behold, here is mydaughter amaiden, and hisconcubine; them I will bringout now, andhumble ye them, anddo with them whatseemethgood unto you: but unto thismando notsovile a thing.
But themenwould nothearken to him: so themantook hisconcubine, andbrought herforth unto them; and theyknew her, andabused her all thenight until themorning: and when theday began tospring, they let her go.
Thencame thewoman in thedawning of theday, and felldown at thedoor of theman'shouse where herlord was, till it was light.
And herlord roseup in themorning, andopened thedoors of thehouse, and wentout togo hisway: and, behold, thewoman hisconcubine was fallendown at thedoor of thehouse, and herhands were upon the threshold.
And hesaid unto her,Up, and let us begoing. But noneanswered. Then themantook her up upon anass, and theman rose up, and gat him unto his place.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
