And anangel of theLORD cameup fromGilgal toBochim, andsaid, I made you to goup out ofEgypt, and havebrought you unto theland which Isware unto yourfathers; and Isaid, I willneverbreak my covenant with you.
2 And ye shallmake noleague with theinhabitants of thisland; ye shall throwdown theiraltars: but ye have notobeyed myvoice: why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore I alsosaid, I will not drive themout frombefore you; but they shall be as thorns in yoursides, and theirgods shall be a snare unto you.
4 And it came to pass, when theangel of theLORDspake thesewords unto all thechildren ofIsrael, that thepeople liftedup theirvoice, and wept.
5 And theycalled thename of thatplaceBochim: and theysacrificed there unto the LORD.
6 And whenJoshua had let thepeoplego, thechildren ofIsraelwent everyman unto hisinheritance topossess the land.
7 And thepeopleserved theLORD all thedays ofJoshua, and all thedays of theelders thatoutlivedJoshua, who hadseen all thegreatworks of theLORD, that hedid for Israel.
8 AndJoshua theson ofNun, theservant of theLORD,died, being anhundred andtenyears old.
9 And theyburied him in theborder of hisinheritance inTimnathheres, in themount ofEphraim, on the northside of thehill Gaash.
10 And also all thatgeneration weregathered unto theirfathers: and therearoseanothergenerationafter them, whichknew not theLORD, nor yet theworks which he haddone for Israel.
11 And thechildren ofIsraeldidevil in thesight of theLORD, andserved Baalim:
12 And theyforsook theLORDGod of theirfathers, which brought themout of theland ofEgypt, andfollowedothergods, of thegods of thepeople that were roundabout them, andbowed themselves unto them, and provoked theLORD to anger.
13 And theyforsook theLORD, andservedBaal and Ashtaroth.
14 And theanger of theLORD washot againstIsrael, and hedelivered them into thehands ofspoilers thatspoiled them, and hesold them into thehands of theirenemies roundabout, so that theycould not anylongerstandbefore their enemies.
15 Whithersoever they wentout, thehand of theLORD was against them forevil, as theLORD hadsaid, and as theLORD hadsworn unto them: and they weregreatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless theLORD raisedupjudges, whichdelivered them out of thehand of those that spoiled them.
17 And yet they would nothearken unto theirjudges, but they went awhoringafterothergods, andbowed themselves unto them: theyturnedquickly out of theway which theirfathers walkedin,obeying thecommandments of theLORD; but they did not so.
18 And when theLORDraised them upjudges, then theLORD was with thejudge, anddelivered them out of thehand of theirenemies all thedays of thejudge: for itrepented theLORDbecause of theirgroanings by reason of them thatoppressed them and vexed them.
19 And it came to pass, when thejudge wasdead, that theyreturned, andcorrupted themselves more than theirfathers, infollowingothergods toserve them, and to bowdown unto them; theyceased not from their owndoings, nor from theirstubborn way.
20 And theanger of theLORD washot againstIsrael; and hesaid, Because that thispeople hathtransgressed mycovenant which Icommanded theirfathers, and have nothearkened unto my voice;
21 I also will nothenceforth driveoutany frombefore them of thenations whichJoshualeft when he died:
22 That through them I mayproveIsrael, whether they willkeep theway of theLORD towalk therein, as theirfathers did keep it, or not.
23 Therefore theLORDleft thosenations,without driving themouthastily; neitherdelivered he them into thehand of Joshua.
