Then all thechildren ofIsrael wentout, and thecongregation was gatheredtogether asoneman, fromDan even toBeersheba, with theland ofGilead, unto theLORD in Mizpeh.
2 And thechief of all thepeople, even of all thetribes ofIsrael,presented themselves in theassembly of thepeople ofGod,fourhundredthousandfootmen thatdrew sword.
3 (Now thechildren ofBenjaminheard that thechildren ofIsrael were goneup toMizpeh.) Thensaid thechildren ofIsrael,Tell us, howwas this wickedness?
4 And theLevite, thehusband of thewoman that wasslain,answered andsaid, Icame intoGibeah that belongeth toBenjamin, I and myconcubine, to lodge.
5 And themen ofGibeahrose against me, andbeset thehouse roundabout upon me bynight, andthought to haveslain me: and myconcubine have theyforced, that she is dead.
6 And Itook myconcubine, and cut her inpieces, andsent her throughout all thecountry of theinheritance ofIsrael: for they havecommittedlewdness andfolly in Israel.
7 Behold, ye are allchildren ofIsrael;givehere youradvice and counsel.
8 And all thepeoplearose asoneman,saying, We will notany of usgo to histent, neither will weany of usturn into his house.
9 But now this shall be thething which we willdo toGibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
10 And we willtaketenmen of anhundred throughout all thetribes ofIsrael, and anhundred of athousand, and athousand out of tenthousand, tofetchvictual for thepeople, that they maydo, when theycome toGibeah ofBenjamin, according to all thefolly that they havewrought in Israel.
11 So all themen ofIsrael weregathered against thecity, knittogether asone man.
12 And thetribes ofIsraelsentmen through all thetribe ofBenjamin,saying, Whatwickedness is this that is done among you?
13 Now thereforedeliver us themen, thechildren ofBelial, which are inGibeah, that we may put them todeath, and putawayevil fromIsrael. But thechildren ofBenjaminwould nothearken to thevoice of theirbrethren thechildren of Israel:
14 But thechildren ofBenjamin gathered themselvestogether out of thecities untoGibeah, to goout tobattle against thechildren of Israel.
15 And thechildren ofBenjamin werenumbered at thattime out of thecitiestwenty andsixthousandmen thatdrewsword, beside theinhabitants ofGibeah, which werenumberedsevenhundredchosen men.
16 Among all thispeople there weresevenhundredchosenmenlefthanded; every one couldslingstones at anhair breadth, and not miss.
17 And themen ofIsrael, besideBenjamin, werenumberedfourhundredthousandmen thatdrewsword: all these weremen of war.
18 And thechildren ofIsraelarose, and wentup to thehouse ofGod, andasked counsel ofGod, andsaid,Which of us shall goupfirst to thebattle against thechildren ofBenjamin? And theLORDsaid,Judah shall go up first.
19 And thechildren ofIsrael roseup in themorning, andencamped against Gibeah.
20 And themen ofIsrael wentout tobattle againstBenjamin; and themen ofIsrael put themselves inarray tofight against them at Gibeah.
21 And thechildren ofBenjamin cameforth out ofGibeah, and destroyeddown to theground of theIsraelites thatdaytwenty andtwothousand men.
22 And thepeople themen ofIsraelencouraged themselves, and set theirbattleagain inarray in theplace where they put themselves inarray thefirst day.
23 (And thechildren ofIsrael wentup andweptbefore theLORD untileven, andasked counsel of theLORD,saying, Shall I goupagain tobattle against thechildren ofBenjamin mybrother? And theLORDsaid, Go up against him.)
24 And thechildren ofIsrael camenear against thechildren ofBenjamin thesecond day.
25 AndBenjamin wentforthagainst them out ofGibeah thesecondday, and destroyeddown to theground of thechildren ofIsrael againeighteenthousandmen; all thesedrew the sword.
26 Then all thechildren ofIsrael, and all thepeople, wentup, andcame unto thehouse ofGod, andwept, andsat therebefore theLORD, andfasted thatday untileven, andoffered burntofferings and peaceofferingsbefore the LORD.
27 And thechildren ofIsraelenquired of theLORD, (for theark of thecovenant ofGod was there in those days,
28 AndPhinehas, theson ofEleazar, theson ofAaron,stoodbefore it in thosedays,)saying, Shall I yetagain goout tobattle against thechildren ofBenjamin mybrother, or shall Icease? And theLORDsaid, Goup; for tomorrow I willdeliver them into thine hand.
29 AndIsraelset liers inwait roundabout Gibeah.
30 And thechildren ofIsrael wentup against thechildren ofBenjamin on thethirdday, and put themselves inarray againstGibeah, as at other times.
31 And thechildren ofBenjamin wentoutagainst thepeople, and were drawnaway from thecity; and theybegan tosmite of thepeople, andkill, as at othertimes, in thehighways, of whichone goethup to thehouse ofGod, and theother toGibeah in thefield, aboutthirtymen of Israel.
32 And thechildren ofBenjaminsaid, They are smittendownbefore us, as at thefirst. But thechildren ofIsraelsaid, Let usflee, anddraw them from thecity unto the highways.
33 And all themen ofIsrael roseup out of theirplace, and put themselves inarray atBaaltamar: and the liers inwait ofIsrael cameforth out of theirplaces, even out of themeadows of Gibeah.
34 And therecameagainst Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
35And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
36So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
37And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
38Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
39And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
40But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
41And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
42Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
43Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
44And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
45And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
46So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
47But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
48And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
