Chapter 8
KJV · Textus Receptus
And themen ofEphraimsaid unto him, Why hastthouserved usthus, that thoucalledst us not, when thouwentest tofight with theMidianites? And they didchide with him sharply.
And hesaid unto them, What have Idone now in comparison of you? Is not thegleaning of the grapes ofEphraimbetter than thevintage of Abiezer?
God hathdelivered into yourhands theprinces ofMidian,Oreb andZeeb: and what was Iable todo in comparison of you? Then theiranger wasabated toward him, when he hadsaid that.
AndGideoncame toJordan, and passedover, he, and thethreehundredmen that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
And hesaid unto themen ofSuccoth,Give, I pray you, loaves ofbread unto thepeople thatfollow me; for they befaint, and I ampursuingafterZebah andZalmunna, kings of Midian.
And theprinces ofSuccothsaid, Are thehands ofZebah andZalmunna now in thinehand, that we shouldgivebread unto thine army?
AndGideonsaid, Therefore when theLORD hathdeliveredZebah andZalmunna into minehand, then I willtear yourflesh with thethorns of thewilderness and with briers.
And he wentup thence toPenuel, andspake unto themlikewise: and themen ofPenuelanswered him as themen ofSuccoth had answered him.
And hespake also unto themen ofPenuel, saying, When I comeagain inpeace, I will breakdown this tower.
NowZebah andZalmunna were inKarkor, and theirhosts with them, aboutfifteenthousand men, all that wereleft of all thehosts of thechildren of theeast: for therefell anhundred andtwentythousandmen thatdrew sword.
AndGideon wentup by theway of them thatdwelt intents on theeast ofNobah andJogbehah, andsmote thehost: for thehost was secure.
And whenZebah andZalmunnafled, hepursuedafter them, andtook thetwokings ofMidian,Zebah andZalmunna, anddiscomfited all the host.
AndGideon theson ofJoashreturned frombattlebefore the sun was up,
Andcaught a youngman of themen ofSuccoth, andenquired of him: and hedescribed unto him theprinces ofSuccoth, and theelders thereof, even threescore andseventeen men.
And hecame unto themen ofSuccoth, andsaid, BeholdZebah andZalmunna, with whom ye didupbraid me,saying, Are thehands ofZebah andZalmunna now in thinehand, that we shouldgivebread unto thymen that are weary?
And hetook theelders of thecity, andthorns of thewilderness andbriers, and with them hetaught themen of Succoth.
And he beatdown thetower ofPenuel, andslew themen of the city.
Thensaid he untoZebah andZalmunna,What manner ofmen were they whom yeslew atTabor? And theyanswered, Asthou art, so were they; eachoneresembled thechildren of a king.
And hesaid, They were mybrethren, even thesons of mymother: as theLORDliveth,if ye had saved themalive, I would not slay you.
And hesaid untoJether hisfirstborn,Up, andslay them. But theyouthdrew not hissword: for hefeared, because he was yet a youth.
ThenZebah andZalmunnasaid,Rise thou, andfall upon us: for as theman is, so is hisstrength. AndGideonarose, andslewZebah andZalmunna, and tookaway theornaments that were on theircamels' necks.
Then themen ofIsraelsaid untoGideon,Rule thou over us, both thou, and thyson, and thyson'sson also: for thou hastdelivered us from thehand of Midian.
AndGideonsaid unto them, I will notrule over you, neither shall mysonrule over you: theLORD shall rule over you.
AndGideonsaid unto them, I woulddesire arequest of you, that ye wouldgive me everyman theearrings of hisprey. (For they hadgoldenearrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
And theyanswered, We willwillinglygive them. And theyspread agarment, and didcast therein everyman theearrings of his prey.
And theweight of thegoldenearrings that herequested was athousand andsevenhundred shekels ofgold; besideornaments, andcollars, andpurpleraiment that was on thekings ofMidian, and beside thechains that were about theircamels' necks.
AndGideonmade anephod thereof, andput it in hiscity, even inOphrah: and allIsrael went thither awhoringafter it: which thing became asnare untoGideon, and to his house.
Thus wasMidiansubduedbefore thechildren ofIsrael, so that they liftedup theirheads nomore. And thecountry was inquietnessfortyyears in thedays of Gideon.
AndJerubbaal theson ofJoashwent anddwelt in his own house.
AndGideon had threescore andtensons of hisbodybegotten: for he hadmany wives.
And hisconcubine that was inShechem, she alsobare him ason, whosename hecalled Abimelech.
AndGideon theson ofJoashdied in agood oldage, and wasburied in thesepulchre ofJoash hisfather, inOphrah of the Abiezrites.
And it came to pass, as soon asGideon wasdead, that thechildren ofIsrael turnedagain, and went awhoringafterBaalim, andmadeBaalberith their god.
And thechildren ofIsraelremembered not theLORD theirGod, who haddelivered them out of thehands of all theirenemies on every side:
Neithershewed theykindness to thehouse ofJerubbaal, namely,Gideon, according to all thegoodness which he hadshewed unto Israel.
