Lamentations
Chapter 2
KJV · Textus Receptus
How hath theLordcovered thedaughter ofZion with acloud in hisanger, and castdown fromheaven unto theearth thebeauty ofIsrael, andremembered not hisfootstool in theday of his anger!
TheLord hath swallowedup all thehabitations ofJacob, and hath notpitied: he hath throwndown in hiswrath the strongholds of thedaughter ofJudah; he hath brought themdown to theground: he hathpolluted thekingdom and the princes thereof.
He hath cutoff in hisfierceanger all thehorn ofIsrael: he hathdrawnback his righthand frombefore theenemy, and heburned againstJacob like aflamingfire, whichdevoureth round about.
He hathbent hisbow like anenemy: hestood with his righthand as anadversary, andslew all that werepleasant to theeye in thetabernacle of thedaughter ofZion: he pouredout hisfury like fire.
TheLord was as anenemy: he hath swallowedupIsrael, he hath swallowedup all herpalaces: he hathdestroyed his strongholds, and hathincreased in thedaughter ofJudahmourning and lamentation.
And he hath violently takenaway histabernacle, as if it were of agarden: he hathdestroyed his places of theassembly: theLORD hath caused the solemnfeasts andsabbaths to beforgotten inZion, and hathdespised in theindignation of hisanger theking and the priest.
TheLord hath castoff hisaltar, he hathabhorred hissanctuary, he hath givenup into thehand of theenemy thewalls of herpalaces; they havemade anoise in thehouse of theLORD, as in theday of a solemn feast.
TheLORD hathpurposed todestroy thewall of thedaughter ofZion: he hath stretchedout aline, he hath notwithdrawn hishand fromdestroying: therefore he made therampart and thewall tolament; theylanguished together.
Hergates aresunk into theground; he hathdestroyed andbroken herbars: herking and herprinces are among theGentiles: thelaw is no more; herprophets alsofind novision from the LORD.
Theelders of thedaughter ofZionsit upon theground, and keepsilence: they have castupdust upon theirheads; they havegirded themselves withsackcloth: thevirgins ofJerusalem hangdown theirheads to the ground.
Mineeyes dofail withtears, mybowels aretroubled, myliver ispoured upon theearth, for thedestruction of thedaughter of mypeople; because thechildren and thesucklingsswoon in thestreets of the city.
Theysay to theirmothers, Where iscorn andwine? when theyswooned as thewounded in thestreets of thecity, when theirsoul was pouredout into theirmothers' bosom.
What thing shall I take towitness for thee? whatthing shall Iliken to thee, Odaughter ofJerusalem? what shall Iequal to thee, that I maycomfort thee, Ovirgindaughter ofZion? for thybreach isgreat like thesea: who can heal thee?
Thyprophets haveseenvain and foolishthings for thee: and they have notdiscovered thineiniquity, to turnaway thycaptivity; but haveseen for theefalseburdens and causes of banishment.
All thatpass byclap theirhands atthee; theyhiss andwag theirhead at thedaughter ofJerusalem, saying, Is this thecity that mencall Theperfection ofbeauty, Thejoy of the whole earth?
All thineenemies haveopened theirmouth against thee: theyhiss andgnash theteeth: theysay, We have swallowed herup:certainly this is theday that we lookedfor; we havefound, we have seen it.
TheLORD hathdone that which he haddevised; he hathfulfilled hisword that he hadcommanded in thedays ofold: he hath throwndown, and hath notpitied: and he hath caused thineenemy torejoice over thee, he hath setup thehorn of thine adversaries.
Theirheartcried unto theLord, Owall of thedaughter ofZion, lettears rundown like ariverday andnight:give thyself norest; let not theapple of thineeye cease.
Arise, cryout in thenight: in thebeginning of thewatches pourout thineheart likewaterbefore theface of theLord: liftup thyhands toward him for thelife of thy youngchildren, thatfaint forhunger in thetop of every street.
Behold, OLORD, andconsider to whom thou hastdonethis. Shall thewomeneat theirfruit, andchildren of a spanlong? shall thepriest and theprophet beslain in thesanctuary of the Lord?
Theyoung and theoldlie on theground in thestreets: myvirgins and my youngmen arefallen by thesword; thou hastslain them in theday of thineanger; thou hastkilled, and not pitied.
Thou hastcalled as in asolemnday myterrors roundabout, so that in theday of theLORD'Sanger noneescaped norremained: those that I haveswaddled and broughtup hath mineenemy consumed.
