Nehemiah
Chapter 4
KJV · Textus Receptus
But it came to pass, that whenSanballatheard that webuilded thewall, he waswroth, and tookgreatindignation, andmocked the Jews.
And hespakebefore hisbrethren and thearmy ofSamaria, andsaid, Whatdo thesefeebleJews? will theyfortify themselves? will theysacrifice? will they make anend in aday? will theyrevive thestones out of theheaps of therubbish which are burned?
NowTobiah theAmmonite was byhim, and hesaid, Even that which theybuild, if afox goup, he shall even breakdown theirstone wall.
Hear, O ourGod; for we aredespised: andturn theirreproach upon their ownhead, andgive them for aprey in theland of captivity:
Andcover not theiriniquity, and let not theirsin be blottedout frombefore thee: for they have provoked thee toanger before the builders.
Sobuilt we thewall; and all thewall was joinedtogether unto thehalf thereof: for thepeople had amind to work.
But it came to pass, that whenSanballat, andTobiah, and theArabians, and theAmmonites, and theAshdodites, heard that thewalls ofJerusalem were madeup, and that thebreachesbegan to bestopped, then they werevery wroth,
Andconspired all of themtogether tocome and tofight againstJerusalem, and tohinder it.
Nevertheless we made ourprayer unto ourGod, andset awatch against themday andnight, because of them.
AndJudahsaid, Thestrength of the bearers ofburdens isdecayed, and there ismuchrubbish; so that we are notable tobuild the wall.
And ouradversariessaid, They shall notknow, neithersee, till wecome in themidstamong them, andslay them, and cause thework to cease.
And it came to pass, that when theJews whichdwelt bythemcame, theysaid unto ustentimes, From allplaces whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
Thereforeset I in thelowerplacesbehind thewall, and on the higherplaces, I evenset thepeople after theirfamilies with theirswords, theirspears, and their bows.
And Ilooked, and roseup, andsaid unto thenobles, and to therulers, and to therest of thepeople, Be not yeafraid ofthem:remember theLord, which isgreat andterrible, andfight for yourbrethren, yoursons, and yourdaughters, yourwives, and your houses.
And it came to pass, when ourenemiesheard that it wasknown unto us, andGod hadbrought theircounsel tonought, that wereturned all of us to thewall, everyone unto his work.
And it came to pass from thattime forth, that thehalf of myservantswrought in thework, and the otherhalf of themheld both thespears, theshields, and thebows, and thehabergeons; and therulers werebehind all thehouse of Judah.
They whichbuilded on thewall, and they thatbareburdens, with those thatladed, every one withone of hishandswrought in thework, and with theother handheld a weapon.
For thebuilders, everyone had hisswordgirded by hisside, and sobuilded. And he thatsounded thetrumpet was by me.
And Isaid unto thenobles, and to therulers, and to therest of thepeople, Thework isgreat andlarge, and we areseparated upon thewall, one farfrom another.
In whatplace therefore yehear thesound of thetrumpet, resort ye thither unto us: ourGod shall fight for us.
So welaboured in thework: andhalf of themheld thespears from therising of themorning till thestars appeared.
Likewise at the sametimesaid I unto thepeople, Let everyone with hisservantlodgewithinJerusalem, that in thenight they may be aguard to us, andlabour on the day.
So neither I, nor mybrethren, nor myservants, nor themen of theguard whichfollowed me, none ofus putoff ourclothes, saving that everyone put themoff for washing.
