Nehemiah
Chapter 5
KJV · Textus Receptus
And there was agreatcry of thepeople and of theirwives against theirbrethren the Jews.
For therewere thatsaid, We, oursons, and ourdaughters, aremany: therefore we takeupcorn for them, that we mayeat, and live.
Some also therewere thatsaid, We havemortgaged ourlands, vineyards, andhouses, that we mightbuycorn, because of the dearth.
Therewere also thatsaid, We haveborrowedmoney for theking'stribute, and that upon ourlands and vineyards.
Yet now ourflesh is as theflesh of ourbrethren, ourchildren as theirchildren: and, lo, we bring intobondage oursons and ourdaughters to beservants, and some of ourdaughtersare brought untobondage already: neither is it in ourpower to redeem them; for othermen have ourlands and vineyards.
And I wasveryangry when Iheard theircry and these words.
Then Iconsulted withmyself, and Irebuked thenobles, and therulers, andsaid unto them, Yeexactusury, everyone of hisbrother. And Iset agreat assembly against them.
And Isaid unto them, We after ourability haveredeemed ourbrethren theJews, which weresold unto theheathen; and will ye evensell yourbrethren? or shall they besold unto us? Then held they theirpeace, andfound nothing to answer.
Also Isaid, It is notgoodthat yedo: ought ye not towalk in thefear of ourGod because of thereproach of theheathen our enemies?
I likewise, and mybrethren, and myservants, mightexact of themmoney andcorn: I pray you, let us leaveoff this usury.
Restore, I pray you, to them, even thisday, theirlands, theirvineyards, theiroliveyards, and theirhouses, also thehundredth part of themoney, and of thecorn, thewine, and theoil, that ye exact of them.
Thensaid they, We willrestore them, and willrequire nothing of them; so will wedo as thousayest. Then Icalled thepriests, and took anoath of them, that they shoulddo according to this promise.
Also Ishook mylap, andsaid, SoGod shakeout everyman from hishouse, and from hislabour, thatperformeth not thispromise, even thus be he shakenout, andemptied. And all thecongregationsaid,Amen, andpraised theLORD. And thepeopledid according to this promise.
Moreover from thetime that I wasappointed to be theirgovernor in theland ofJudah, from thetwentiethyear even unto thetwo andthirtiethyear ofArtaxerxes theking, that is,twelveyears, I and mybrethren have noteaten thebread of the governor.
But theformergovernors that had beenbefore me werechargeable unto thepeople, and hadtaken of thembread andwine, besidefortyshekels ofsilver; yea, even theirservants barerule over thepeople: but sodid not I,because of thefear of God.
Yea, also Icontinued in thework of thiswall, neitherbought we anyland: and all myservants weregathered thither unto the work.
Moreover there were at mytable anhundred andfifty of theJews andrulers, beside those thatcame unto us from among theheathen that are about us.
Now that which wasprepared for medaily wasoneox andsixchoicesheep; alsofowls wereprepared for me, and once intendaysstore of all sorts ofwine: yet forall thisrequired not I thebread of thegovernor, because thebondage washeavy upon this people.
Think upon me, myGod, forgood, according to all that I havedone for this people.
