Nehemiah
Chapter 9
KJV · Textus Receptus
Now in thetwenty andfourthday of thismonth thechildren ofIsrael wereassembled withfasting, and withsackclothes, and earth upon them.
And theseed ofIsraelseparated themselves from allstrangers, andstood andconfessed theirsins, and theiniquities of their fathers.
And they stoodup in theirplace, andread in thebook of thelaw of theLORD theirGod one fourthpart of theday; and another fourthpart theyconfessed, andworshipped theLORD their God.
Then stoodup upon thestairs, of theLevites,Jeshua, andBani,Kadmiel,Shebaniah,Bunni,Sherebiah,Bani, andChenani, andcried with aloudvoice unto theLORD their God.
Then theLevites,Jeshua, andKadmiel,Bani,Hashabniah,Sherebiah,Hodijah,Shebaniah, andPethahiah,said, Standup andbless theLORD yourGod forever andever: andblessed be thygloriousname, which isexalted above allblessing and praise.
Thou, even thou, artLORD alone; thou hastmadeheaven, theheaven ofheavens, with all theirhost, theearth, and all things that are therein, theseas, and all that is therein, and thoupreservest them all; and thehost ofheaven worshippeth thee.
Thou art theLORD theGod, who didstchooseAbram, and broughtest himforth out ofUr of theChaldees, andgavest him thename of Abraham;
Andfoundest hisheartfaithfulbefore thee, andmadest acovenant with him togive theland of theCanaanites, theHittites, theAmorites, and thePerizzites, and theJebusites, and theGirgashites, togive it, I say, to hisseed, and hastperformed thywords; for thou art righteous:
And didstsee theaffliction of ourfathers inEgypt, andheardest theircry by theRed sea;
Andshewedstsigns andwonders uponPharaoh, and on all hisservants, and on all thepeople of hisland: for thouknewest that they dealtproudly against them. So didst thouget thee aname, as it is this day.
And thou didstdivide theseabefore them, so that they wentthrough themidst of thesea on the dryland; and theirpersecutors thouthrewest into thedeeps, as astone into themighty waters.
Moreover thouleddest them in theday by acloudypillar; and in thenight by apillar offire, to give themlight in theway wherein they should go.
Thou camestdown also uponmountSinai, andspakest with them fromheaven, andgavest themrightjudgments, andtruelaws,goodstatutes and commandments:
And madestknown unto them thyholysabbath, andcommandedst themprecepts,statutes, andlaws, by thehand ofMoses thy servant:
Andgavest thembread fromheaven for theirhunger, and broughtestforthwater for them out of therock for theirthirst, andpromisedst them that they should goin topossess theland which thou hadstsworn to give them.
But they and ourfathers dealtproudly, andhardened theirnecks, andhearkened not to thy commandments,
Andrefused toobey, neither weremindful of thywonders that thoudidst among them; buthardened theirnecks, and in theirrebellionappointed acaptain toreturn to theirbondage: but thou art aGod ready topardon,gracious andmerciful,slow toanger, and ofgreatkindness, and forsookest them not.
Yea, when they hadmade them amoltencalf, andsaid, This is thyGod that brought theeup out ofEgypt, and hadwroughtgreat provocations;
Yet thou in thymanifoldmerciesforsookest them not in thewilderness: thepillar of theclouddeparted not from them byday, tolead them in theway; neither thepillar offire bynight, to shew themlight, and theway wherein they should go.
Thougavest also thygoodspirit toinstruct them, andwithheldest not thymanna from theirmouth, andgavest themwater for their thirst.
Yea,fortyyears didst thousustain them in thewilderness, so that theylacked nothing; theirclothes waxed notold, and theirfeet swelled not.
Moreover thougavest themkingdoms andnations, and didstdivide them intocorners: so theypossessed theland ofSihon, and theland of theking ofHeshbon, and theland ofOgking of Bashan.
Theirchildren alsomultipliedst thou as thestars ofheaven, andbroughtest them into theland, concerning which thou hadstpromised to theirfathers, that they should goin to possess it.
So thechildren wentin andpossessed theland, and thousubduedstbefore them theinhabitants of theland, theCanaanites, andgavest them into theirhands, with theirkings, and thepeople of theland, that they mightdo with them as they would.
And theytookstrongcities, and afatland, andpossessedhousesfull of allgoods,wellsdigged,vineyards, andoliveyards, andfruittrees inabundance: so they dideat, and werefilled, and becamefat, anddelighted themselves in thygreat goodness.
Nevertheless they weredisobedient, andrebelled against thee, andcast thylawbehind theirbacks, andslew thyprophets whichtestified against them toturn them to thee, and theywroughtgreat provocations.
Therefore thoudeliveredst them into thehand of theirenemies, whovexed them: and in thetime of theirtrouble, when theycried unto thee, thouheardest them fromheaven; and according to thymanifoldmercies thougavest themsaviours, whosaved them out of thehand of their enemies.
But after they hadrest, theydidevilagainbefore thee: thereforeleftest thou them in thehand of theirenemies, so that they had thedominion over them: yet when theyreturned, andcried unto thee, thouheardest them fromheaven; andmanytimes didst thoudeliver them according to thy mercies;
Andtestifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring themagain unto thylaw: yet they dealtproudly, andhearkened not unto thycommandments, butsinned against thyjudgments, (which if a r.
Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.
For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:
And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
