KJV · Textus Receptus
And all thecongregation liftedup theirvoice, andcried; and thepeoplewept that night.
And all thechildren ofIsraelmurmured againstMoses and againstAaron: and the wholecongregationsaid unto them, WouldGod that we haddied in theland ofEgypt! or wouldGod we haddied in this wilderness!
And wherefore hath theLORDbrought us unto thisland, tofall by thesword, that ourwives and ourchildren should be aprey? were it notbetter for us toreturn into Egypt?
And theysaidone toanother, Let usmake acaptain, and let usreturn into Egypt.
ThenMoses andAaronfell on theirfacesbefore all theassembly of thecongregation of thechildren of Israel.
AndJoshua theson ofNun, andCaleb theson ofJephunneh, which were of them thatsearched theland, rent their clothes:
And theyspake unto all thecompany of thechildren ofIsrael, saying, Theland, which wepassed through tosearch it, is anexceedinggood land.
If theLORDdelight in us, then he willbring us into thisland, andgive it us; aland whichfloweth withmilk and honey.
Onlyrebel not ye against theLORD, neitherfear ye thepeople of theland; for they arebread for us: theirdefence isdeparted from them, and theLORD is with us: fear them not.
But all thecongregationbadestone them withstones. And theglory of theLORDappeared in thetabernacle of thecongregation before all thechildren of Israel.
And theLORDsaid untoMoses, How long will thispeopleprovoke me? and how long will it beere theybelieve me, for all thesigns which I haveshewed among them?
I willsmite them with thepestilence, anddisinherit them, and willmake of thee agreaternation and mightier than they.
AndMosessaid unto theLORD, Then theEgyptians shallhear it, (for thou broughtestup thispeople in thymight from among them;)
And they willtell it to theinhabitants of thisland: for they haveheard that thouLORD artamong thispeople, that thouLORD artseenface toface, and that thycloudstandeth over them, and that thougoestbefore them, by daytime in apillar of acloud, and in apillar offire by night.
Now if thou shaltkill all thispeople asoneman, then thenations which haveheard thefame of thee willspeak, saying,
Because theLORD wasnotable tobring thispeople into theland which hesware unto them, therefore he hathslain them in the wilderness.
And now, I beseech thee, let thepower of myLord begreat, according as thou hastspoken, saying,
TheLORD islongsuffering, and ofgreatmercy, forgivinginiquity andtransgression, and by nomeansclearing the guilty, visiting theiniquity of thefathers upon thechildren unto thethird and fourth generation.
Pardon, I beseech thee, theiniquity of thispeople according unto thegreatness of thymercy, and as thou hastforgiven thispeople, fromEgypt even until now.
And theLORDsaid, I havepardoned according to thy word:
But astruly as Ilive, all theearth shall befilled with theglory of the LORD.
Because all thosemen which haveseen myglory, and mymiracles, which Idid inEgypt and in thewilderness, and havetempted me now thesetentimes, and have nothearkened to my voice;
Surely they shallnotsee theland which Isware unto theirfathers, neither shall any of them thatprovoked me see it:
But myservantCaleb, because he hadanotherspirit with him, and hathfollowed mefully, him will Ibring into theland whereinto hewent; and hisseed shall possess it.
(Now theAmalekites and theCanaanitesdwelt in thevalley.) Tomorrowturn you, andget you into thewilderness by theway of theRed sea.
And theLORDspake untoMoses and untoAaron, saying,
How long shall I bear with thisevilcongregation, whichmurmur against me? I haveheard themurmurings of thechildren ofIsrael, which they murmur against me.
Say unto them, As trulyas Ilive, saith theLORD, as ye havespoken in mineears, so will I do to you:
Yourcarcases shallfall in thiswilderness; and all that werenumbered of you, according to your wholenumber, fromtwentyyearsold andupward, which have murmured against me,
Doubtless ye shallnotcome into theland, concerning which Isware to make youdwell therein, saveCaleb theson ofJephunneh, andJoshua theson of Nun.
But your littleones, which yesaid should be aprey, them will I bringin, and they shallknow theland which ye have despised.
But as for you, yourcarcases, they shallfall in this wilderness.
And yourchildren shallwander in thewildernessfortyyears, andbear yourwhoredoms, until yourcarcases bewasted in the wilderness.
After thenumber of thedays in which yesearched theland, evenfortydays, eachday for ayear, shall yebear youriniquities, evenfortyyears, and ye shallknow my breach of promise.
I theLORD havesaid, I willsurelydoit unto all thisevilcongregation, that are gatheredtogether against me: in thiswilderness they shall beconsumed, and there they shall die.
And themen, whichMosessent tosearch theland, whoreturned, and made all thecongregation tomurmur against him, by bringingup aslander upon the land,
Eventhosemen that did bringup theevilreport upon theland, died by theplaguebefore the LORD.
ButJoshua theson ofNun, andCaleb theson ofJephunneh, which were of themen thatwent tosearch theland, lived still.
AndMosestold thesesayings unto all the people mourned greatly.
And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.
And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
